Here's the thing...the best thing about the Buu Arc is Vegeta. Vegeta's character development and his rivalry with Goku is brought full circle here and honestly my favorite part of this arc is Goku and Vegeta working together starting from fusing into Vegito through finishing off Kid Buu because of that. Their dynamic in this arc is fantastic when they are working together. Not to mention the Majin Vegeta fight, although that is kind of impacted negatively by the fact we know Goku wasn't going all out in that battle. Still Vegeta's sacrifice against Fat Buu was a beautiful moment for his character. When Vegeta admits Goku is better than him, that line still sends chills down my spine. I remember as a kid my jaw literally dropped when he said that.
That being said...I didn't like the direction they took with Gohan. Him being cocky against Super Buu was a repeat of his mistakes against Cell. We should have seen Gohan learn from that mistake and not repeat it this arc because Gohan is too damn smart to be that thick headed. I would have liked Piccolo to be more than Gotenks' babysitter. Gotenks' also felt kind of like a waste too. The story seems to set up this whole next generation taking over theme, but it never goes anywhere and the next generation fails. It felt like, this arc, more than another, Toriyama couldn't decide how to end it and you can feel the exhaustion from Toriyama through his writing in this one.
Not to mention, as much as I like the idea of Uub, that ending just doesn't feel like a proper ending for the story. It's a great ending for the arc, but not for the story as whole. Of course GT's ending feels like the better ending for the story overall.
Supreme Kai was so cool at first, but got sidelined. The reintroduction of magic was great in concept but Toriyama didn't go far enough with it IMO.
Also the Super Saiyan thing got ridiculous with Super Saiyan 3. As cool as it was a kid, it really feels unnecessary. Super Saiyan 2 wasn't even called Super Saiyan 2 until the Buu Saga, it was Super Saiyan Grade 5 and implied to be basically the true full potential of the Super Saiyan power. Like Super Saiyan but perfected. Which is what the Cell Saga was building up to and why Super Saiyan was still cool in the Cell Saga and impactful. IMO Goku should have used Super Saiyan with Kaioken. Super Kaioken would basically provide all the same plot points of Super Saiyan 3. Super Kaioken provides a massive boost of power, but it creates a lot of strain so that Goku cannot use it for long periods of time just like Super Saiyan 3. And it would have made a lot of sense to have Goku combine his two biggest sources of power at this point: Kaioken and Super Saiyan. But Fusion is still freaking awesome though, I love it.
But...to end it on a positive note, this arc did make people love Hercule/Mr. Satan and that was an impressive feat in and of itself.

The only thing I disagree with is your perspective on Super Saiyan 2. Now, this is 100% benefitted by hindsight, but I truly don’t understand how anyone could construe Gohan’s SS2 transformation as simply a new grade of SS1. The whole point of grade 4 was that THAT was the perfection of SS1: no stamina drain and no emotional change. SS2 was powerful, but seemingly regressed from what made grade 4 perfect because it made Gohan more violent. Plus, it gave him a completely new hairstyle which never happened with the SS1 grades. The closest thing is that Trunks broke through his hair tie when he went grade 3, so we just saw what his regular SS1 hairstyle would’ve been without it.

@@Watermelon_Man There were data books released after the Cell Saga that call what Gohan achieved in the Cell Games “Super Saiyan Grade 5” it wasn’t called Super Saiyan 2 until Goku was demonstrating the forms to Babidi and Buu before going SSJ3. Toriyama even suggested in interviews SSJ3 was him grasping for new power up ideas. So SSJ2 was an extension of SSJ originally.
This is why I think Goku should have had Super Kaioken instead. After mastering Super Saiyan and having an Other World body, he finds it possible to use Kaioken with Super Saiyan without it killing him and he uses that instead of SSJ3. He could only use it in burst though and it would take a toll on him similar to SSJ3, especially after he gets his living body back. So it would keep the plot pretty much the same, but without watering down SSJ with the existence of SSJ3, as SSJ2 would be an extension of SSJ and Super Kaioken would be SSJ augmented by Kaioken.
After that, the next logical extension would be SSJ4, probably renamed obviously. But maybe Goku realizes that there are too many drawbacks to Super Kaioken, but he’s reached the full potential of Super Saiyan, so the idea comes that perhaps a new power can be achieved by combining Super Saiyan with Oozaru. Then once achieving that, Goku has truly reached his max power as a Saiyan, so the only option left is to go for the God powers and abilities.
That seems like a natural evolution of power, where as SSJ3 feels…out of place in the grand scheme of things.

The story as a whole ending with Buu's defeat. That was an epilogue for Goku and Buu.
People make the same mistakes multiple times. But he wasn't as bad as with Cell. He wasn't cruel about it. He wasn't even that cocky, and he was that much stronger than him
There's nothing wrong with the next generation "failing". The characters did what they could at the time they could.
Piccolo failed against Freeza, Vegeta against cell ect. Goku gave the only people around a means of defending themselves.
Supreme Kai thing was on purpose. Just like how spopovich and Yamu turned out to be nobodies. And that gravity times ten guy.
They never used the terms grade in story.
The kaioken fanfiction doesn't add anything if you'll say it's going to do the same as ssj3.

Buu Saga holds a special place in my heart because my first ever piece of DBZ home media was a VHS tape of Fusion Saga: The Last Saiyan which had the 4 episodes of Vegito vs. Buuhan.
However, the first scene of Dragon Ball that I ever saw was on a Saturday back in the day when Toonami would air about 2-4 hours of DBZ episodes each weekend. I was channel surfing and winded up seeing 17 crushing Number 20's head. After seeing that, I WAS HOOKED!
Personally, my favorite portion of the Buu Saga was when Goku & Vegeta met on the battlefield to face Buuhan leading to their fusion into Vegito, Kid Buu blowing up earth and the final battle on the Kai planet.
When I look at both sagas as a whole, I would give it to the Cell Saga. Buu Saga just had WAY too much going on. It had A LOT and I mean A LOT of epic moments, fight sequences, signature moves, etc. What brought it down was that it just went on for WAYYYYYYYYY too long. I was in maybe 6th grade when I first got into DBZ and I know people who QUIT watching the series because no one could defeat Buu; SS3 Goku, Majin Vegeta, Ultimate Gohan, etc. the arc just kept going and going.
At least the Cell arc had a number of opponents to switch things up because Cell became the true big bad.

  • @RalphyMarz

The Cell saga was the superior arc in DBZ. From the beginning to end, it gave us more of an urgency; there was no time wasted. It was training and fighting, and people dying in between it all. We experienced character development with most of the cast. Also, we seen them all be part of solution when it came to defeating cell. It kept us on our toes. The dramatics of the arc never settled down until the very end of it.

For me its the Cell arc easily. Cell is arguable my favorite saga of Z. First of all just the feel, it was refreshing being back with an earth based story after the Namek arc which felt like if would never end. The character relevancy and interactions was huge for me. This was the only arc post saiyan where every character was relevant, or at least had a good amount of screentime. Goku was sick for a while which out some spotlight on Trunks and Vegeta, Piccolo was the main character for a bit, Gohan ended up as the top dog, Krillin played a role, Tien played a role, even Yamcha to an extent along with the rest of the supporting cast. It gave the arc a but more of a home earth Og Dragonball vibe to me. Cell as a villian along with the androids were a lot more interesting to me then Buu and Babidi, the fights (Goku/Gohan v Cell, Vegeta vs Cell, Piccolo vs 17, Tien vs Cell etc) were better, it was a more interesting story. Even the filler I found much more entertaining, like the TaoPaipai episode, and Krillin saving the family from Imperfect Cell.

Personally i feel that the Cell saga is the better arc. And one of the many reasons for that was that the entire Z squad was involved heavily through out it.

I honestly thought some of the Buu saga fights were better than the Cell saga fights. The Buu saga even had Goku and Vegeta finally get their rematch which was better than their first fight, but didn't have a decisive conclusion. Also, Buu was a bigger threat than Cell. Cell was a weapon created to defeat Goku, while Buu was more of a force of nature that couldn't be controlled for long and could destroy everything if the good guys couldn't stop him. Not to mention that Vegeta had a proper conclusion to his character transition from evil to good. Even Hercule was given redemption in the Buu arc. I like how Goku's search for a successor was handled better in the Buu arc than in the Cell saga, which ultimately led to everyone working together to defeat Buu. I am also glad that Goku came back to life during the Buu saga, even though his sacrifice in the Cell saga was great and his reasoning for not coming back to life made sense.

Buu saga introduced DB to me. It's the perfect DBZ arc for me. Super Vegito, Gohan's Mystic form, SSJ3 Goku and Majin Buu becoming good was wholesome. The end of Z fight with uub was chilling too.

The Buu saga got too convoluted. It felt like they started just throwing everything at the wall!
It kept dragging on. Gohan could have defeated Buu, then Vegito could have defeated him. It went on too long.
The Cell Saga had the “Perfect” amount of plot twists, character development and big battles! The story feels well balanced.

Gohan couldn't beat buu. Was he stronger, sure. Strength ain't everything. Hence why buu > cell.
It was bigger than just getting a bigger power-up. It took EVERYTHING. Grit, power, planning, dragon balls, gods, earth etc.

I enjoyed both sagas but I feel the Cell saga was better. Even though I’m not a huge fan of Gohan, seeing Goku pass the baton to him was a great story and of course SSJ2 transformation was incredible. Stories of alternate timelines always fascinated me.

The Cell Saga was superior. The story was just as serious if not moreso than the Frieza Saga. It also gave us Piccolo vs 17! Which is one of the best fights in Dragonball Z. As well as Cells KO punch in black and white to Piccolo. But nothing ever topped Gohans Super Saiyin 2 transformation. I believe that's arguably the best moment of the entire Dragonball franchise.

I do think Cell had the better themes and it was the best ending point the series potentially had. That said, I do like highschool Gohan as I age. I wish the early Buu saga had been a tv special or something of Gohan getting back into the swing of being a hero. Not being Goku but realizing he has a responsibility if he wants to live his dream or protect his family, friends and Videl.

The android/ cell saga is my favorite arc had a lot amazing fights, awesome story and great character development. Also the z fighters trying to figure out who were the androids that were in Trunks timeline. But then learning that they were facing the wrong androids and also figuring out that it was another one they had to face off and stop him from absorbing the other androids. But the buu saga was awesome too had some great moments and awesome story. Another thing that was epic was vegeta sacrificing himself to save his family it was great but too realized it was all for nothing because majin buu came back great arc. Hard to choose but I’ll go with the android/ cell saga.

I enjoy both Arcs, great moments in both, but Androids/Cell arc was peak DBZ and my favourite saga in DB history
    - SSJ2 Gohan (epic)
    - Goku not being the focal point but passing the torch to Gohan
    - Cell is my favourite villain of DB
    - My favourite character, Piccolo getting key moments
    - Future Trunks introduction
    - Build up to Cell Games
    - Final Kamehame Ha possible best climax in anime
Buu saga had great stuff to
    - Definitely Vegeta’s character arc coming full circle
    - SSJ3
    - Goku V Vegeta fight
But it did drag on a lot, and it just came more about power boosts in the end. Although the final spirit bomb with Vegeta’s plan and Mr Satan playing a key role had an interesting take.
Certainly both arc above anything in Super though

Both Sagas kept changing who the final antagonist and final hero would be:
Android/Cell saga villain: First Mecha Frieza and King Cold; then Androids 19 and 20 (Dr. Gero); then Androids 17 and 18; then Imperfect Cell, Semi Perfect Cell, Perfect Cell, and finally Super Perfect Cell
Cell Saga heros: Piccolo, Trunks, Vegeta, Goku, and finally Gohan
Majin Buu arc villains: Spopovich and Yamu; Babibi and Dabura; Majin Vegeta; Fat Buu, Super Buu, Buutenks (after absorbing Piccolo and Gotenks), Buuhan (after absorbing Gohan); and finally kid Buu
Majin Buu arc heros: Vegeta, Gotenks, Ultimate Gohan, Vegito, and finally Goku

The Cell saga story was better overall. Time travel, Trunks, Gohan's character arc that was getting hyped up the entire series, and the red ribbon army returning with the androids. The Z warriors training in the hyperbolic time chamber. New Super Saiyan forms and more Super Saiyans. Cell terrorizing the world, absorbing everyone, and the Cell games.

For me its Android/Cell saga. The emotional hits of Vegeta going SSJ, getting wrecked by 18, Cell absorbing 18 (that scene always came off very r*pey to me) and 16 dying and Gohan losing his shit for SSJ2 and finally destroying Cell was just an almost perfect story :)
We also get a good scene of a "normal" human, Tien, putting up REALLY good fight/sacrifice vs Imperfect Cell as a bonus :)

I kinda had a question about 17's death, he was alive and well in the Buu saga, but what I wanted to know is they made a big deal about Krillin needing two wishes to be transported from where Namek used to be to Earth's check in station, and then to be brought to Earth. It seems that 17 came back in single wish when King Kai's planet was blown up when he was assumed to be still trapped inside Cell when that happened. How did he just end up on Earth if he was dead at the former location of King Kai's planet? That also makes me asks how death works in the other world in general for not dead characters like Goku, King Kai (and Bubbles/Gregorry), and 17 in general as we saw them at the beginning of snake way (but not 17) the episode after the Cell arc was done

They both have their moments. In the cell saga Gohan shows that at the time he was the strongest person, & in the buu saga you have the first fusion, SS3, The World martial arts tournament, Evil Vegeta, Super saiyan gotenks, Super Saiyan Gotenks 3, +more first, but I luv them all ❤

Buu saga. I've thought about this for a really long time. Buu just brought a very grim, galaxial threat. An entity that will end all of existence to where the gods would have to eventually get involved. It was a dire, desperation to end an enemy that was ultimately devilish. The reason the heroes were rambling and the next runner up kept coming up is the sense of desperation they were facing.

But mt favorite part of the Buu arc is when fatbuu healed that blind kid tommy.

I think the sagas individually bring different elements to the story. We are reintroduced to the Red Ribbon Army alongside Dr. Gero and the androids. We wouldn’t know about them or Goku’s virus if it weren’t for Trunks, who traveled from the future. Super Vegeta, Super Trunks, Super Saiyan 2 Gohan.
Then we have Majin Buu who was introduced as this malicious monster of destruction with The arrival of Super Saiyan 3 and fusion. ultimate Gohan. I think they both are great in their own way

To me the Cell and android sagas are just one saga. And the Cell/Android saga is tied with the Saiyan, and Demon King Piccolo sagas. Those three did a perfect job of capturing the fact that this is an all out fight for the survival of earth. The way they portrayed the reactions to the unfolding situation all around the world in those three stories was just what a lot of these super powered action stories tend to miss.

The Android/Cell Saga changes it’s villains to keep the audience guessing as an engaging element.
On the other hand, the Buu Saga literally traded the main villain’s character just as we’re getting used to them- making it tedious. The villain we began with is not even the one we finish with- heck, even the final form isn’t technically the same character by the time he dies.
