  • Rat Fink art has an interesting history rooted in the counterculture movement of the 1960s in the United States. The art style was popularized by artist Ed "Big Daddy" Roth, who became a prominent figure in the hot rod and custom car scene.

In the late 1950s and early 1960s, Ed Roth began creating custom cars and motorcycles known as "show rods" that featured unique and eye-catching designs. Alongside his custom creations, Roth started drawing cartoons that embodied the rebellious spirit and love for fast cars shared by many enthusiasts at the time.
One of Roth's most famous characters was Rat Fink, an anti-hero that symbolized the darker side of American car culture. Rat Fink was a grotesque, larger-than-life rat creature with exaggerated features, representing the wild and rebellious nature of hot rod enthusiasts. Roth's drawings of Rat Fink were often paired with clever and humorous captions that added to the character's charm.
Roth's Rat Fink artwork gained significant attention and popularity, thanks in part to his involvement in the car show circuit and the growing interest in the hot rod scene. The distinctive style and irreverent humor of Rat Fink resonated with young people looking to challenge societal norms and express their individuality.
Rat Fink art and merchandise became highly sought after, with fans eagerly purchasing t-shirts, decals, model kits, and other collectibles featuring the character. The artwork also inspired a wave of imitators and influenced the development of other subcultures, such as lowbrow art and Kustom Kulture.
While Ed Roth's prominence waned in the 1970s, the legacy of Rat Fink art endured. The character and art style have continued to resonate with subsequent generations of car enthusiasts, artists, and fans of pop culture. Rat Fink remains an enduring symbol of the rebellious and creative spirit that characterized a significant period in American automotive and counterculture history.

I can remember when they used to iron on black line images like this onto white T-shirts and then air brush the colors. Definitely a blast from the past!

I loved this artwork -- back in the 1970's, I used to sit for hours and draw cars and bikes in much the same style... I used to sell them for beer money...
