I first learned because of the Super Smash Bros. Brawl reveal trailer. My only prior exposure to Metroid at the time, aside from the previous Smash games (never owned them at the time, so I didn't really spend time looking at the trophies), was Metroid Prime 2: Echoes multiplayer.

Well, many players didn't knew Samus was a girl until the very end of the original Metroid (1986).
Kinda reminds me of that gamer magazine article, that because samus gender wasnt disclosed at the time she was wrongly depicted as a man so in the magazine image is accompanied by two girls in bikinis, which is hilarious.

This moment is exactly why Samus is designed the way she is lol. In the first Metroid game, discovering that she was a girl the whole time was your reward for beating the game in less than 3 hours. It's aged well, even in 2023 people are really only 60/40 if they haven't played a Metroid game

Funny cause in the og japanese translation, Zelda actually uses magic to literally turn herself male, its just been removed from later iterations by nintendo, kinda a interesting fact when I heard about it.

In Fusion (a top 3 best Metroid game, personally) she has a biosuit that’s made with X parasite and Metroid DNA. She could be wearing something like that underneath the blanket
If you make your living as a lone bounty hunter, sleeping with your gun makes a whole lot of sense. Especially if you bring anything in alive (which may be released) instead of dead.

Fr it’s on the same level of “Darth Vader is Luke’s father” in my mind. How could you know the character by name and somehow also not know the most culturally prevalent thing about them?
watame is japanese so american cultural knowledge is probably not mapping 100% to japanese cultural knowledge meaning it is probable that she would not know even some well known things like samus, even american/european cultural knowledge does not map completely, it is probably a lot better than american/japanese cultual maps but even then you have huge swatchs of knowledge that have not been transferred from europe to america because the european stuff is in a european language

And I really don’t think cultural barriers have any interference in that aspect. It’s not like they removed zero suit samus in the Japanese release

The promotional materials for the first game, including the instruction manual, consistently refer to Samus as male in order to keep the secret. There's even a licensed manga where Samus has girls in bikinis hanging off of her like she's Conan, but in retrospect it makes her look like the butchest of lesbians

I found out when my friends and I were playing Brawl. I was playing Samus and it was my first time getting the Smash Ball with her. I used the alt, the armor dropped, I was confused and didn't know who I was playing and accidentally jumped off the map
When Metroid was release in 1986 it was using 8 kb of ram... So Samus was rendered pretty poorly... But nowadays we can see all the details. :P
But Nintendo knew exactly what they were doing when they made a hot blonde girl with big booba and made her a badass main character. Hahaha! ^_^

(Tangentially related, but I liked how Samus's Final Smash in Brawl would cause her switch between Full armor and Zero Suit. Kinda sad that they became separate characters in later entries.)
Yeah nah, I'm glad they separated them. I remember being annoyed that if I used a Smash Ball I was handicapping myself because I was really bad at playing Zero Suit Samus.
I miss being able to switch between them too. I actually preferred playing Zero Suit because she was much faster. Today I'll still main Zero Suit over armored Samus, but I still enjoy that form too.

@@Laidengizer011 Tbf, the games do their best to keep it hidden. Other M is the only game where we really get to see Samus out of her suit for an extended period of time, in all the other games it's basically an Easter egg.
