First two records I bought with my own money were this one and "I'll be Forever Loving You". Twenty five years later they were the 1st two we put on our Jukebox........I grew up listening to WDIA in Memphis, great radio station ,great time and place to grow up....Good music never dies..
thanks for posting this song it brings back memories when I was a kid, mom an pop used to dance to this song in our living room wow ! what a time I had watching them both thanks again
My buddy and myself lived in Sharp Park (now Pacifica) We hitch hiked to the the Orpheum Theater in downtown San Francisco. The Jumpin' George review. The Robins introduced "Smokey Joe's Cafe" also The Royal Jokers sang "You Tickle Me Baby."
Huge hit about Oct. 1955. I was just an eighth-grader. The usual Pat Boone cover of this song was laughable. Played all over north Jersey at private dance parties and local record hops.
he was the Christian white version of the R & B tunes.so were most UK artist in 62-64.I guess it's better to have covers than nothing.what a gift we;ve been given and never recognized it until another culture revilled it to us.
909kong - Gotta be honest. I'll be 73 on March 9. Who am I gonna fool, abs gone, biceps gone, hair gone. No way to fake that. Thank you pal for your comment. Jack..
I heard the Pat Boone version of this a few days ago. Laughed my ass off. Pat had no shame. He would produce crap versions of all the best r-and-b songs of the day. And he probably made a fortune doing it.
That's Anderson SC and Memphis. Many Deep South outlets avoided singles by black groups/artists. Not all of them, but enough of them to make the Pat Boone versions popular, as well as other "white" versions. "Church Bells May Ring" for example, in the north, it was the Willows, in the south, the Diamonds. Remember that Elvis sounded "Black" to many folks before they saw him on TV too!
@srercrcr Yes Steve, and I love it. Have you ever heard Red Hots and Chili Mac by the Moroccos and That's your Mistake by Otis Williams and the Charms both very cool. How about Let's be Lovers by two original Flamingos - Nate Nelson and Terry Johnson as The Starglows - it sounded so much like the Flamingos there was a law suit and it was removed from the stores.
The only reason Pat Boone covered a lot of songs is because the southern stations wouldn't play "race" music. Lots of examples out there. Unfortunate but true..those were the ways of the time.
I love this song!!! One of the best uptempo doo-wops EVER.

The best. I watched them perform in 1955 in SF along with Shirley & Lee, The Robins, Hank Ballard and a few others.

Doo wop, R & B, & blues were the best part of Jr. High in the '50's. From the Moonglows to Ray Charles, to Muddy Waters - it was all good!
must've been my past life. Rock Out, Jackson!

great group.
KDIA ; I haven't heard that call letter in a thousand years!
A very big hit the fall of 1955 in the New York area. Where did this great song go to? Makes no sense it's basically forgotten today.
909kong, I appreciate your honesty. So I guess at 72 years old, my cool music is more or less in the junk bin. After that, I feel more like I'm 82.

Is this revisionist history? Some of the best stations in the US were southern stations, which I personally listened to.
great song...Harry Nilsson's version is a rocker, but this original really helps you appreciate a great song and doo-wop
@sleepytimegalz I'm honored.
@sleepytimegalz Thanks. So somewhere between 16 and now, you went to the dark side, eh?
@myfutureofyou Well, it went to my Ipod and that box in my closet!
