  • The richness of this protected natural area, cataloged as a Biosphere Reserve on November 10, 2000 , lies in its fir, pine, oak and cedar forests, in addition to its unique faunal relevance, with 184 species of vertebrates registered. , of which four are amphibians, six reptiles, 118 birds and 56 mammals.
    It is located in the municipalities of Temascalcingo, San Felipe del Progreso, Donato Guerra and Villa de Allende in the State of Mexico and in the municipalities of Contepec, Senguio, Angangueo, Ocampo, Zitácuaro and Aporo in the state of Michoacán.
    It is also the migration, wintering and reproduction area of ​​the Monarch butterfly, one of the most interesting specimens of its species due to its particular life cycle and the characteristics of its metabolism to protect itself against predators.

    I've mever seen so many butteflies in one place at a time, let alone so many Monarch butterflies. Its lovely. 😍

      Hard to believe they travel all the way from Canada and US for 3 months. It's almost time for them to head back home now as you can see most of them have grown to be adults.
