I don't know the whole story, still the way I see it was just that, they wanted to be on a relationship and that they believe that they're capable of giving their hundred percent love to each other yet Inigo knows it'll be unfair for Maris once he steps up international stage. She can give all the love to Inigo,and he wants to do the same way,but he knows and sees the possibility of a complicated situation where Maris will suffer more and that it can ruin what is still left. It'll be burdensome to Maris as well if Inigo chooses her because she knows it's Inigo's dream. They just wanted to make each other happy it's just that,their roads can't meet somehow the way they want it to be. Sometimes you just have to let things the way it has to be done, for future awaits for beautiful possibilities, it just takes time.
