- We've arrived at the Cold Harbor Battlefield to begin breaking down the last major battle of the Overland Campaign. We're thrilled to be joined by one of our friends at the National Park Service, Ranger Mark Wilcox!
This video is part of our series commemorating the 160th Anniversary of The Overland Campaign. You can view the full series here: • The Overland Campaign ... #coldharbortour
The American Battlefield Trust preserves America’s hallowed battlegrounds and educates the public about what happened there and why it matters. We permanently protect these battlefields for future generations as a lasting and tangible memorial to the brave soldiers who fought in the American Revolution, the War of 1812, and the Civil War.
Yes,another great video on this Saturday morning!
Nice touch to add the ranger Mark Wilson to discuss the fighting and troop movements. Dan Davis is excellent, but the ranger brings a change of pace
Enjoy your expertise! The Virginia landscape is just coated with blood. Incredible sacrifice
Really enjoying the Overland 160....and the account by Mark Wilcox was a total ' bonus '.....a great story teller.
Blu and Grey storage in Mechanicsville has all relics found during it's construction on display in their office
Love it, folks. Keep em coming.
If you can imagine, it was the warmest summer to date, wearing wool uniforms, and fighting with little to no shade, let that sink in
Ranger Mark Wilcox's presentation is riveting! My jaw dropped! Bravo!
Dan Davis is the best ! I thoroughly enjoy his commentaries. Keep up the good work.
Thanks folks! Great info on an engagement generally forgotten.
Mark Wilcox has such an amazing narrative! He and the entire ABT do such as great job this battle is similar to Gettysburg, which is Fascinating and intriguing, Horatio Wright 6th Corps recalls Sedgewick killed in Spotsylvania, now reinforced by Gen Baldy Smith 18th Corps from the US Army of the James arrives... LEE has formed defenses with PGT Bureagard. The story of the Heavies, 2nd CT Heavy Artillery, and the other Heavy ART inf regiments, they are called Band box soldiers, Fresh fish, oh are you a division, the number 1200, hardly any of the veteran regts have that many as 1861/62... There is a gap between Kershaw's division in Lee's Line, the US 14 NJ vol Inf attack into the gap! vs the 51 NC inf, a battle really ensues... The Union Army captures trenches and 700 prisoners plus, the 2nd CT HA INF, Strong Kellog, this is tragic... Litchfield CT, 30% casualties, they fell in all shapes, and others staggered about... under a whizzing of lead. Col Kellog is killed before Claymen the Confederate Rebel accounts for his death,...
Toured the battlefield, it was a slaughter
Thank you all for the continued Overland 160’s videos. These have been fantastic.
Stephen Snedeker and Uriah Snedeker (my 2nd great-grandfather) fought that day with the 2nd CT HA. My great-grandfather was wounded in the head but survived the war. I had the honor of visiting Kellogg's final resting spot in Litchfield CT. He is buried with a lot of those who served in the 2nd CT HA. I am proud of the 2nd and that someone finally has done a video to recognize the first day of Cold Harbor, It often gets overlooked cause of the next 11 days. I must get down there. Thank you
thinking of your ancestors....I was there 2 weeks ago on that hallowed ground and saw the monument!
Outstanding presentation. Thank you
Thank you so much, was just reading about the Gaines Mill action near Cold Harbor this morning!
My Great Great Grandfather was in the 2nd Massachusetts Heavy Artillery.
Love those "Preserved Forever" signs! I had the privilege of seeing a couple at Bentonville Battlefield (North Carolina). It's what we do best!
Cold Harbor. Not named for a body of water, but a bar.
..and I'm supposed to be working and productive.... but, let's take a break.. 😁
Didn’t know I was going to start my day getting educated. Thank you! 👏👏👏
These videos are amazingly informative! Almost as good as being there!
Thank you as always!
May I suggest, to add to this entertaining video about the Battle of Cold Harbor: "Not War But Murder" by Ernest Furgurson? A beautifully written account.
Another great video in the Overland 160. Really enjoying the series and am learning a lot. Outstanding job, everyone.
"I could see the dust fog out of a man's clothes two or three places where as many balls would strike him at the same moment. In two minutes, not a man of them were standing."
Thanks 👍
Outstanding
❤
Well done I love the build up to June 3!
I’m quite sure general Meade is delighted that you have removed him from the battle of Cold Harbor. He’s only the commander of the army of the Potomac. Yet he’s the only person of any rank who does not appear on your maps. I’m guessing in this case, though, he’s delighted that you removed him from history and this debacle
