I have learned (the hard way) over the years and now I stick with two main brands when it comes to outdoors equipment: Honda and Stihl. Rarely do I have equipment issues beyond routine maintenance.
Thats a decent way to live when your privileged to have the money to buy the most expencive version of everything.
@@Synic08 you will spend your money at the initial purchase or the maintenance to keep them running. i have had my Stihl chainsaw for 15 years and i've only ever had to put fuel in or change the chain. Literally nothing else.
NEVER had a problem with any of my Hondas......love 'em!!
JAKE3914
Currently have a 13’ Honda Recon ES, and I work the crap out of it almost every day hauling firewood out of the woods. Estimated to have somewhere around 35,000 miles on it. Never had a problem! Gone through 3 sets of tires, if that’s any indication of how hard it’s ridden. Recently was given a used Yamaha Rhino 700 with 5,000 miles on it, and it hasn’t been very reliable. Taken the engine case apart twice to replace the stator coil (got a bad one the first time), which includes removing the water pump. Overheats when I load it down with wood, and run down the road (the same thing I’ve done forever with the Recon). Blows out rear cv joints so often I just gave up, so they click like crazy. Just waiting for one to come apart completely to replace them. Really need to upgrade to a Honda Pioneer!
@@carsonjohnson1845 I have the 2000 foreman 450, things a beast compared to my friends newer 700 belt drive peices of shit. I also drive Honda cars, and a large array of our pumps and machines I use on my farm, all the honda products are a dream that last forever... All other brands just have quirks over time, I wish other companies had such dedicated as Honda.
Finally someone tells the truth about polaris
Derek Bedford could of asked me a long time ago I could of told ya the truth haha
Cat Jack ... I need a 6 seat crew model for my farm . i have 5 kids. Im thinking about saving a few bucks and getting the yanmar. It's the same as the yamaha viking with tons of accessories. I need it for hunting fishing and farming. Im not interested in big power i just want dependability any thoughts?
Derek Bedford ya really can’t go wrong with a Yamaha they are super reliable right up there with Honda the new wolverines got the 850 engine in them of ya wanted the extra power but if that’s no issue the Viking is great I was in a six seater touring the mountians in Newfoundland it was a great unit. I had 2 Polaris sportsman’s and they were real troublesome. Have a can am xmr at the moment seems to be ok so far. I ride a lot of mud so I went with a mud bike. I’m not Familiar with yanmar but if they are anything like the yamaha you should be ok.Good luck with your choice!
Cat Jack .... Yanmar is typically a tractor company. But they made a deal with yamaha. The units are exactly the same. Just different decal options and different color options.
I tell people that truth all the time and they think IAM hating cause they have a new atv and I have a 2006 Yamaha. One guy even told me don't worry things will get better with money and you could get you a new atv I was like dude I don't need to finance like you I can go get me one cash💰 reason IAM still driving a old one cause IAM waiting for it to break down but it just won't stop running
I’m 15 and I have a 2001 Honda I go mudding all the time and beat the you know what out of it. But it has never left me out on the trails and it has always started. That’s 18 years of no issues it’s absolutely brilliant.
I was very happy when I got rid of my Polaris and went to a Honda 3 years and 1700 miles without an issue.
Biggest complaints about the Polaris was how poorly it was built and the complete lack of support from the factory about common known issues. These are also my biggest thumbs up to Honda. The Honda is well built and the factory is very proactive in addressing every possible issue.
I have bought a Honda pioneer 1000 and I'm so happy with my purchase .
I have a pioneer 2015 its been great so far 5000+ miles climes well carried out my sons elk 1000 pounds and several more elk.
I have owned several Polaris rangers and have had minor issues.Along with many of my friends owning them. I just purchased a 2019 camo ranger totally outfitted and it is a beast. My friend has a honda side by side and he loves his machine. I think they are both awesome machines. As everyone knows there always seems to be a machine in every group that is a pain in the rear. I am lucky i have an awesome dealer in our area. I hope your honda does great.
My starter went about 2 months ago on my Honda four-trax and it has been sunk fully under water in a river and I am still riding it. I want a sxs but I don’t really need one because I have such a reliable quad.
I got a 2005 honda rancher 400, I love it, use it for fun and lately a lot of work, its been great.
I’ve got a 2004 rancher 350 manual. It ain’t for sell for no way. I know you didn’t ask, I’m just shouting about how much I like it.
You hit a homerun on this review. Real geared transmission. Real front and rear lockable differentials.
Just bought a Honda Talon R...Love the paddle shifters!! Looks and rides Awesome!!
I have a 1987 Honda Foreman 350 4x4. Starts and runs great still. I hope the new Hondas are still designed and built as well as the old ones. I'll definitely check out the Pioneer when it's time for a SXS.
I loved my Polaris when it was running.
I had a brand new polaris 800 ranger that melted a hole through the seat, ECM problems, couldn't keep wheel bearings on it, and the list goes on. I've had no issues with the Honda. Great video, thank you
Previous place I worked had a lot of utv. Hondas and kawasaki mules tended to hold up better than the polaris rides. Does not mean they are not enjoyable but people prefer some rigs more than others. I now own a Mule sx xc 4x4. It is not fast but I was very impressed with the ones at work and wanted the same reliability.
You just helped with my decision between Polaris and Honda, I wanted 500cc so you helped. I also had a foreman for 13 years. Thanks for your honesty. Yes Honda is more but don’t want poor quality
thank you for sharing your experience with your ranger. Mine just hit 10 years old and I cant believe I still have the damn thing and put up with all of its issues. Even after light riding or towing itll overheat on me. The pioneer and canam are definitely on the list to check out and purchase in 2019.
your experience with polairs...IS my experience with polaris. They are just not as good as Honda.
Rick May maybe you guys claiming polaris is junk simply bought the wrong polaris for the job. The ranger is not a farm implement. If that’s what you’re looking for than you should’ve bought a polaris brutus.
@@ROTAXD Translation: Polaris look good on the sales floor but don't use them for any real work or you'll break them. My Arctic Cat *IS* a "Farm Implement".
ROTAXD he was using it for exactly what they are built and advertised for. There just junk, Polaris has always had a name of being junky other then in the snowmobile industry, I own one that hasn’t been miss treated, and hey I be there first to say it, it’s junk and it’s a good thing I’m a mechanic and have a two post lift. But hey I know plenty of people that just use there’s to go to the mail box once a week that swear by them.
@@ROTAXD So, what EXACTLY is the job for Polaris? Seriously, "Wrong job BRAH!" sounds like a crap excuse. Are you saying the Polaris Rangers are NOT a daily use UTV? Are they some sort of 4 wheeled primadonnas that you only get to take out on the weekends after spending all week getting them ready? Is Polaris the hot cheerleader that you take out to lunch all week, buy her a bunch of jewelry, carry her books just for the chance of having some fun on the weekend? It's a dam machine, It moves you from point A to point B. If it continuously breaks doing that...IT IS JUNK!
Rick May & morehp1, Rick May the job of a ranger ? Rangers are meant for mostly yard work, hunting, some trail riding. Again, you want a work machine, find a polaris brutus. Morehp, we do far more than drive down to get the mail once weekly and we’ve been fine. In fzct, we’ve had far better luck with it it than our friends who run yamahas & our unfortunate other friends that ride a kymco-cat.
I had a Polaris the gas meter went out the radiator fan went out we sold it and got a Honda pioneer 1000-5 and we love it
Nice comparison and info. Just found your channel, great info, thanks. I just switched to a lightly used 16 Kubota RTV X900. Not sure about it just yet...
This makes me so happy. Thank you for sharing your experiences with these crappy machines. Knowfully you will have another 20 years of use out of this one. I've got a 1988 honda 300 fourtrax going on 32 years later no leaks nothings been done other than brakes and regular maintenance. Love your vid too.
I also have an 88. Replaced axle bearing ,(very common) brakes , and just recently the starter. Best machine ever built!!!!!
I had a John deer, the same odd issues ruined the experience... jd finally fixed it after I threw a fit, and I got rid of it. Honda, they look amazing, thanks for the review... I will def go with them next time.
I don’t like cvts so as long as Honda keeps making atvs with actual transmissions they will be my only option.
Put 1300 miles on my new 17 last year and was trouble free. Change the oil and go. This is my 3rd pioneer and I absolutely love them. Came from two 500s and upgraded to a 1000 last year. I have that exact same machine. Love it.
Had sense enough to buy a Honda from the start in 1974. Never been anything but a Honda. My last purchase was a 2018 Pioneer 700.
Bought a 2018 Pioneer 1000 last spring, amazing machine!
I’ve owned two polaris rzr sxs’s. Totaled one out and thank goodness I didn’t buy from your dealer because the roll bar saved my life! Second one is so good so far. I’ve always been a Honda fan and think they make the best machine on the market for reliably. I don’t think the side by sides are as good as the 4 wheelers, but if they are half as good that would still be pretty amazing. I will always buy polaris for now on though because I’m addicted to speed and they are so much dang fun. Good luck with it and I’m sure it will give you many trouble free years of service.
I would be extremely happy to shovel the snow on your property in July. 😂 Great video.
Good video telling the difference. Thanks for sharing.
Honda just makes quality equipment in so many categories.
Been using my 900 Ranger weekly for 2 years hauling firewood , plowing snow 3/4 mile gravel road absolutely no issues . Starts at -10 degrees , very dependable.
It's only 2 years old see if its running in 20 years my polaris only lasted about 5 years
He didnt get a lemon that has been the problems with everyone I know. Front rack bust on the rangers and rzrs ( probably every model they make) and it doesnt take much to do it. The electronics are crap and they are at the lowest possible spot to get water and debris in them. Front diffs bust, reverse chains bust fuel gauges quit hell I can't think of anything on them that is reliable.
I have the same Pioneer. Bought it in June of 2019, I've put almost 3,000 miles(some pretty hard). All I've done is change the oil and took it in for the recall on the steering column. Great great product.
I've owned a polaris ranger since 2006 with absolutely no issues use it on the farm everyday.
I have a 2016 Ranger 900 XP. I use it for plowing and going through my woods with hills. Only thing that came up was rear bearings needed to be replaced.
I have had zero issues with any of my Polaris toys. Ever. Magnum, Sportsman, RZR, Ranger. I use em hard. No problems.
Gsfbffx Pdhhdf same here. owned a rzr and a fourwheeler, both had constant issues
I have a 2016 Polaris Ranger. I have not had 1 problem with mine and I love it. I use mine for plowing and hauling trailers around my property.
I have a 2016 rzr 900 and have never had to change the belt on it yet, it's been really reliable, no issues
I’ve landed on several of your videos while cruising through my various interests like when you rebuilt the utility trailer. I enjoy your well-spoken, informative, and witty videos that make it feel like a dialogue rather than just you. Definitely subscribing now. Appreciate your work and keep it up!
I went with the Yamaha Wolverine. Absolutely LOVE it!
Thanks. Great video. We are steering away from a Polaris as well due to some issues we had with ours in the mountains of NC. I did want to share one thing with you. We had a couple of miles of private road with several families depending on it being open (medical reasons, etc). I did the plowing and was always banging up the blade on protruding rocks and the occasional stump. It took me two years to figure out that if I unbolted the replaceable bottom part of the blade and inserted about 3" of thick stall mat between the replaceable bottom and the plow itself, I could drop the plow down and ride with the stall mat doing the snow removal, not the metal blade. Looks like you have a very nice concrete driveway and that might not help you much, but if you do any gravel road plowing... But again, thanks. We'll go look at Honda now. It's too hot here to sit on that Polaris heat machine all summer.
I have a Pioneer 500, I call it golfy. It's a workhorse around here. I was out climbing the ravines last night in the snow, the paddle shift is necessary for holding gears, otherwise it hunts too much. So this morning I got up to 6-7" of heavy snow and since it is going to get nasty cold this week, I was pushing the snow banks back with my Kubota loader. I got it stuck! I had to walk to the other end of the property to retrieve golfy, after hooking up a chain, a couple of tugs with golfy and the tractor was free. I'm always amazed at how strong the Pioneer 500 is, whether joy riding up and down the ravines or saving the day.
You can’t beat a Honda.I know a lot of people that have polecat rangers, always have problems.Have good week.
we had a ‘15 Gator 850i, used it everyday 365 for at least a few hours a day, always had it loaded to the nines. had a couple fuel pumps go and did some other matinence but other than that was a good machine.
I had the 450 forman 2001 and haven't had to do a single thing except some new tires. I'm extremely happy
Look into kubota rtv I have an 1120 and I absolutely love it. I pull a 2 bottom plow with it as well as a ton of other implements. I have had it for just over a year and so far no problems.
I've been a Honda owner since 1972 never had any complaints
Man, great review! Love the honest approach.
I have 3000 miles on my 2014 Polaris rzr 900xp and has been going strong
This machine should treat you well for what you're using it for, best of luck.
Their quads are the same. I'm not a Honda fan as it lacks the power I want but polaris service is horrible that's for sure.
By far one of the best videos I have seen. It is refreshing to see someone just tell his own story without all the bashing of another product. Well done and thank you sir.
Well you know what they say about Honda... its a Honda! Thrashed my 2019 TRX420FM1 with just over 100km into a ditch last weekend going about 40, destroyed my helmet, and probably would have destroyed myself if I wasn't wearing it, but the quad held up, just had a bent front bumper. Love my hondas!
you were born to do review man please do some more. Excellent !!!!!
Remember that old commercial back in the 70"s. "You meet the nicest people on a Honda". Just a memory.
This Honda pioneer has some Honda Automotive Division Technology in it. ❤️
Nothing like my Kubota RTV 1100, heat/ac even a DVD player to listen to much Pink Floyd while working the properties.
And go only 20mph. Just joshin ya man. My father in law has a Kubota RTV And it’s a great machine
I've never been a fan of a snow mobile drive in a 4 wheeler. I've got a Yamaha Kodiak. 15 years old and running strong. Love those Hondas!
Same problems with my Polaris. It's at the shop now... for another rack replacement. Researching sxs for a replacement and looking at the Pioneer, came across your vid.
welp, that sealed the deal for me. thank you
Good to know all the issues you had. We're doing research for purchasing a utility vehicle in the near future.
Thanks!
2 years now I've been researching. For the $$$ they run I want to be darn sure. Already have a toy or 2 but they're older. Every time I get antsy to buy I have to reel myself back. West coast the complete sports machines, east coast the more trail / sport ute flavor. It's tough.
Tom A get a honda p1000. Or a yamaha wolverine. Stay away from 4 seat machines. They suck
We have two Polaris rangers and several standard quads for our ranch and I can say you made good choice. By changing over to another side by side.
I purchased a 2019 Honda 700-4 with a plow & a winch a roof & windshield just under 20k oh & a complete set of mud/snow tires. I really like all I do with it & I’m thinking now I made the right choice after watching your video ! I really wanted to get a Polaris but in the end it was the Honda that won out. I’m actually enjoying it more than I thought I would. So that being said, I think you made the right decision on trading the Polaris ! Good luck with your Honda & most of all enjoy it ! ! !
I bought a 2011 polaris ranger 800 twin.Brand new.Speedo cluster ring broke and popped off in the cold untouched, clutch made tremendous noise.i think there just sloppy made. One thing polaris has down pat is the ride.Had an polaris sportsman, electrical problems. No More polaris here.JAPANESE have equipment engineered to almost perfection!Kubota, honda, yanmar, suzuki, yamaha, kawasaki, you cant go wrong. All my hobby farm equipment is now Japanese.Sorry America, your engineering doesn't cut it sometimes.
moultonditcher
1) the 800 was one of Polaris’ worst motors.
2) I’ve had polaris in my stable as well as can am & honda. Never had any oe wiring issues with the polaris. As for clutch noise, the only time I’ve seen much noise out of popo clutches is when they’re completely neglected or people are in the habit of tooling around @ 10 mph in high range.
I used to be 100% American with almost everything. I want to support my country... but damn... over the past 15 or 20 years American made stuff has dropped in quality and most larger items are full of stuff from China anyway.
I think the only thing i haven't changed on my 2011 ranger 800 XP it the plastic. will never own another Polaris
I love my 2011 Polaris Ranger.
I have Honda too and I use it for plowing with a 6ft truck plow and pull a 20 foot trail with 4 wheelers on it
Polaris SxS are the only ones I've ever seen, that have had welds break. Even on ones just used around the farm rather than out jumping on the trails. Pioneer 1000 has been a great asset on my property, hauling firewood, hay, gravel from my creekbed, fence posts, just about aevery task. Havent put a snowplow on it yet, dont get a lot in SE Mo, but its in the plans for the future.
Honda best on earth will last for ever I have a 1984 200 Honda big red runs like new
How about an update video on your pioneer?? I would love to hear how its working out for you! I have 2 pioneer 700-4's and am considering upgrading to the 1000-5
So glad I tan across this. I am shopping for a UTV and was leaning toward a Polaris. Not now.
Thank You Sir, for this honest review and highlighting these problems to me, so I hopefully can avoid this aggravation You had to endure.
Sliding doors and a good defrosted cabin on that Honda, would have been perfect..
Greetings from North of Norway..
A local fab shop could make an adapter given decent photos of what you need.
I love my 2018 Honda Pioneer 1000-5. I believe you will not be disappointed
Sorry to here about the bad luck with your 2016 Polaris. I have a 16 Polaris 900 ranger and it is awesome. I have had no issues and I’m still on the original belt after 3000 miles. Firewood hauling and trailer pulling most of the time. I have always been a honda fan and I have no negative comments about them. Good luck with yours sir and please keep us updated...you never know, Honda may find its way back in my garage someday.
I had a 2017 Polaris general that had so many problems. I solved the problem and got a 2018 Honda Pioneer!
Thanks for sharing. Very helpful.
I have a 2005 Polaris ranger and it basically has been bulletproof since I had it. Bought it brand new.
Back Creek Cabin, We had a 2013 Polaris Ranger 500 , absolutely wonderful machine (utility and for recreation) we recently upgraded to a Polaris XP 900 and couldn't be more pleased as well :)
I have a 2014 Polaris Ranger xp 900 , bought it new , it’s a beast , no troubles love it
I have had Honda and Polaris.......LOVE the Polaris, on two Sportsman 500
have 12,500 trail miles on them in the mountains of AZ, Now have a Razor 570
love the unit with 4,000 miles.
I have a 2014 Pioneer 700-4 which I really like. These replaced the Big Reds. I think the 1000’s came out in 2016 maybe.
"Weeee orrrrrrhhh weeeee orrrrrhh, you guy's can play that sound back if you want" brilliant comment!
I usually say to folk when they make a sound effect How does it go again?
Thanks for the video. I'm in the market and the information you provided will definitely make me reconsider my decision.
You just got yourself a subscriber , helped me make up my mind . My old man always swore by Honda
very interesting talk...
I must be really lucky. My 2017 Polaris Ranger 1000XPS Crew has been trouble free.
I think he could have just got a bad one. I’ve never had any problems with my Polaris atv’s
I bought a 2007 Honda Rancher in early 2009 from a dealer who couldn't sell them. I go it for pennies on the dollar. I still have that beast, and it is still the best quad I've ever owned. I am now looking for a 4 seater because I have kids who are too big to ride on the quad with me. I'm pretty much sold on the Honda Pioneer. Thanks.
I have an 06 since new . Never had an issue. Best machines on the planet
Love your video buying a Honda 700 Pioneer this week. I have owned lots of Honda products through the yrs. and they are very reliable 😁🇨🇦👍
Back in 2003, I bought a brand new Honda Foreman after owning a Recon. Also after riding my cousins Big Red 3 wheeler on their farm. A little while later my brother bought a big Polaris atv. He left his atv at my house so I was able to drive it. The Polaris instantly had some issues. He ended up trading his Polaris for a motorcycle and over 17 years later I still have my 2003 Honda Foreman. I use it to plow, pull carts, skid logs and just to ride. I have skidded a lot of logs with it. I would never give it away or buy another brand after owning it. I wish I would have bought two back in 2003.
Two years after making this comment and I still have my Honda Foreman. It has 10,059 hours on it with no problems.
I've never had a problem with my 2015 ranger 900 but I dont doubt for a second that honda is more reliable
thanks for comparison. helpful.
i have a honda atv its see 3 of my kids growing up riding the hell out of it....now i ride it ...im 59 yrs old and the honda is still running strong.....never quits
nothing shocking about people having trouble with polaris. I wanted one ....until I researched Polaris and found the nightmares people had with that company
Nice Review! I concur overall, especially if I were buying new today. However, Honda side by sides weren’t around in 06, so I bought the Polaris. And to this day, I have never had any of the issues mentioned here. I’ve had it all over Baja in some of the worst conditions imaginable and after 12 years, 14,000 miles, 10,000 hours I put a new top end in the motor. I do service, & maintenance regularly, and replace the belt yearly just to be on the safe side. I recently picked up another one pretty much the same as the other for 3K and freshened it up for about another thousand so now I have two. Retired now and not as aggressive as I used to be, these two more than serve my needs here on the beaches and low deserts around San Felipe, Baja, plus I have an “extra” for when company comes.
More are in service bays cause 90 percent sold are Polaris.. and most people do not take care if the machines i have a 08 800 and a 19 900 and zero issues with both, wait i had to replace the key in my 800 it wore out after 10 years... but im biased i do work for Polaris in the drive train plant.. we have our issues but so does everyone else..
@@fetish636 I've had them all and polaris is junk compared to everyone of them. Company is horrible. Can am is the second worse.
My Honda Pioneer has been nothing but issues. The motor is back together again and for now it's running good. My 2003 Honda ATV never had an issue. The pioneer has been the oposite and I would be happy to trade it for a polaris at this point.
I have been researching for months trying to decide what SxS to buy. If you can list the issues that would be great. Thanks
@@InHotAz I'm a little skeptical. My guess is he treated it like a submarine and flooded the motor. That would be user abuse. Not Honda's fault. To be honest the only issue is the rear diff which clunks sometimes and the doors on the 700 rattle. Well known minor issues which are corrected by using 80W-140 in the rear end and door bumper shims. The rubber door stoppers aren't long enough.
Wow! I'm... well was going to pick one up tomorrow. You saved my bacon. Thank you.
Thanks for sharing your experience. We have our eye on a used Honda.
I trust Honda with my life when I go to the woods solo. Been paralyzed since 1991. Honda gets me there & back every time.
I had 2013 foreman loved it had 6 k miles traded it for Yamaha it should hold up well the Honda are solid !
First off, I like your channel. I’ve definitely learned some things from you and your experiences. Did you go with power steering on your Honda Pioneer? How is it holding up? I’ve had a couple of Honda ATVs and you can’t kill them. I’m looking at SxS now for my farm. I’m in the Southern Appalachians and kind of have the same requirements as you - feed and firewood hauler with some other light duty. Thanks for posting your content.
It has been flawless so far. I will probably do a follow up video soon since it has been a year now. I did get the power steering. Nice, but not a requirement.
@@RedToolHouse You are correct, the power steering is not a requirement. I bought the absolute base model. I will be adding a power steering kit to it. Power steering helps if you do a lot of rough terrain driving, with the bumps. It also helps a LOT with the mud driving when you are in 4WD, especially with the dif lock engaged. When I am in the deep mud and dif lock, the steering wants to go straight. Once you muscle it to turn, it gets to about half way to a maximum turn, and then it wants to go to full maximum turn. So, for a lot of rough or mud driving, GET THE POWER STEERING.
@@RedToolHouse don't see how anybody can afford the sxs looking at the price tag on them
Thank you, I appreciate the honest review and opinions.
Thank you for this information. I’ve settled on the Pioneer 520 instead of the Ranger 570.
Thanks Troy. Enjoy your side by side. Their a nice product I've yet to own one but I know Honda makes a mean machine. My brother bought a Pioneer in 2016. He Has had good service with it too. I think Honda waits to come out with these ATVs to see the demand of what they sell. And when they do come out with the latest and greatest they do it right the first time. No time for trial and error but get it right, right from the start. That's my opinion. If I ever do get a side by side it'll definitely be a Honda. Thanks for your input.
I agree. I have had a quad, a street bike, and now a side by side by honda. Happy so far.
Yeah but only thing is when they do come out it's to little to late. I love Hondas I've never had an issue I didn't cause. I think with the pioneer they kept it a little safe.
Good story, great information. :-)
Got a 2003 Honda Foreman 450. Replaced a carb on it and thats it in 17 years. Needed a carb from sitting too long. Things a beast.
I'm looking at a Mule 4010 4x4 now.
Thanks for the comparison
What a level headed, easy going, family man. He is articulate, didn't go into a profanity laced tirade, but just shared his experience in a truthful and thoughtful manner. That's my take on this clip, I'm impressed.
thnks!
if anything is going to spark a profanity fueled tirade, its going to be a polaris.
that polaris kept pushing him too... good guy.
