@@jutjubow It's a song about an old ABBA song that revokes fond memories of times gone by. What do you expect it to sound like? Of course it sounds like an ABBA rehash.
Mark Dowd when you consider the tripe we’ve sent (for the most part) since, this is up there as one of our strongest entrants. Also the contest was quite poor in 2000 I felt
People judging her looks, her dress... Omg are they deaf? This song is so nice and catchy. Her vocals are so good. Her voice and vibrato are so unique! Love this song...
Although being old-fashioned, performed as campy as it could get including terrifying costumes, this actually isn't that bad of a song. Considering the quality level was extremely low that year, this should've done better.
Nice to see they went for someone with reliable vocals! A pretty good song! Have never watched this year's Eurovision and wish they had the show in full!
UK finishes in 16th place in 2000: Worst ever result! Terrible, we've never finished this low before! UK finishes in 16th place in 2020s: Wow, great result! We nearly made it onto the left hand side of the board! Amazing!
In 2000, John Springate and Gerry Shephard (from the Glitter Band) decided to rekindle their successful song writing partnership and worked on writing a song for the Eurovision song contest. A good number of songs were written and recorded together and Nikki French was brought in to spearhead their bid on their track ‘Don’t Play That Song Again’. The song won the Song For Europe competition and Gerry and John’s song was more than adequately fronted by Nikki in the Eurovision itself. However, the usual Eurovision tactical voting prevented the song from winning. That said, Gerry, John and Nikki were immensely proud to have been able to represent the UK in the contest.
@@McRocking The irony is that the song’s title is an accurate description of what people think once they’ve heard it! They’re, “Oh God! Please no! Don’t play that song again”!! Hahaha! The song composition is reasonable enough, if somewhat forgettable. However, the production is beyond dreadful. Recorded and mixed in a home studio, using something like Cuebase, by the sounds of it. The VST’s have got to be some of the must underwhelming sounds I’ve heard. The drums and cymbals sound weak and tinny and the piano, like something out of a Casio keyboard. The song perhaps could have been more electrifying and thus had a greater audible punch, had it have been produced and mixed by a more skilled studio ensemble. Also, on the live performance, the harmonies were dreadful. There’s a limit to how many people can be on the stage, in the ESC. So they needed voices that combined had projected a great sound. The guys were totally wrong for this. Their voices too deep to harmonise with just two girls. The singers should have all been female, to give the correct lifts in the bridges and choruses. As Nicki has more of a lower baritone vocal. Having two other lower registered vocalists just left those seminal parts flat, which in turn left the rest of the track underwhelming and flat.
I hadn't realised how swedish in style uk performances could be. I dont like the song but there confidence and carelessness here. In the 2000s the UK and Sweden very much diverged with Sweden upping their game.
Personally, I think it's a very beautiful song. Incredible melody, good lyrics. But I think that its downfall was the fact that people in general don't like music about breakups and loneliness (even when it's this good...)
Say what you want about her outfit (I personally like the pants and overcoat), but I love this song and Nicki is AWESOME live! I don't watch Eurovision, but I read that it didn't score high. It deserves better.
Brilliant performance all round here, but the problem is, like many of the UK's recent entries, is that the song is just far too generic. It's very Eurovision-y, whereas recent winners from, say, Sweden or Germany or Denmark, have all been more 'pop'.
So Nicky was 37 back at the time, was dressed like a 17 years old school girl and her hair was styled like a 67 years old house wife. I understand why this song didn't do so well.
Generally I like this performance, Nicki has a great vocal range and it definitely deserved to do better. The only criticism I have is the outfit totally wrong style for her but still a great performance.
Nicki French pleased the audience, but what a risk to call it ' Don't play that song again' in a contest - what a subliminal message to the juries. Poor Josh Dubovie met a similar fate with ' That sounds good to me' when it didn't seem to sound good to the juries did it? A shame.
You have to say this was likely the best performed and most credible song in a woefully poor competition that year. Unfortunately it looked and sounded like something from 20 or more years earlier, which probably did for it.
Can we just appreciate how good she is live?? Brilliant vocals
But song is poor .
Didn`t she perform it well , a true pro who new how to get a song across , it deserved a better placing.
Also found out the news She felt it was treason
Europe was punishing us for the Iraq war at the time. Great song and brilliant vocals. She did us proud

Why did they dress a 35 year old woman like an old woman wearing a young person's clothes??
They did it to make a bridge to camilla parker bowls
