I was fortunate enough to meet Sly & Robbie after a show in Seattle in September 2009, when I was just twenty years old. Robbie Shakespeare in particular was really special to me, since he was one of the main reasons I became a bass player. Both guys couldn’t have been more gracious and easygoing. Even at 1:00 AM, they made time to chat with everyone who came to meet them.

Every album I've ever heard that had Sly & Robbie as the rhythm section has been brilliant. From Black Uhuru to Joe Cocker (Sheffield Steel), from Bob Dylan to the Taxi tours and albums. Horrible news that Robbie's gone.

Seen them many times over the years and in "84" while bopping around Kingston, I passed by the Zinc Fence Studio and Sly just happened to step outside for a break and I kicked it with him for a few minutes. The last time I saw them together was when they were backing up Bitty McClean in LA.

The 1985 hybrid drum kit!!!! Love it. This song is very emblematic of the 80’s Reggae, the synth sounds, the square rhythms very “cocaine vibe” as opposed to the 70’s herb based w/ horn section

@@ramelolivez63 I was born in 1985 the same year I believe this video was on the late night show. I watched a reverb video that talked about the importance of a certain model of Casio synthesizer that became the go to and emblematic synth sound of 80’s reggae. It also talked about the large shift in the island culture from the 70’s-80’s and how a big part of that was the big shift in drug culture. Burning Spear/Gregory Issacs have several interviews where they talk about the drug culture shaping the music culture and vise versa.
