John Keston's acting as Gehn can never be over-praised. By the time you meet him, you have ample evidence that Gehn is a mad tyrant, yet the style and poise with which he delivers his blend of truths, half-truths, and straight up lies is so phenomenal, you can't help but admire the man.
I love how in some of the bad endings his entire demeanor changes right before he shoots you- shows you how his entire speech was an act put on to convince you... SO many levels to John Keston's performance
Thanks for posting this - some of these endings I hadn't come up with, and it's nice to see them all. One correction for your timestamp listings: the person who gives you the book back in Tay (the Moiety age) is Nelah, not Keta. Keta is Ghen's wife, who died giving birth to Atrus. She shows up in the credits because of the mementoes Ghen keeps in his living quarters on the 233rd Age (where the dome books take you) Nelah is mentioned by name a couple of times in Cathrine's Journal, including in the note she tucked in it that addresses the player directly. Easy mistake to make, they're both extremely minor characters who could have easily been credited as Moiety Woman and Ghen's Wife, much like how all the other side characters were credited.

Thanks, I was going to save state back through all of the other endings after getting to the good ending, but this was far faster than having to wait though 8 credit screens.
God, the sass with which he says, "your way is clear; you're free to go home," after you've fumbled your mission at the finish line by failing to free Catherine is just hilariously venomous. Atrus, king of passive-agression.
So what happened with Ending 3? Did Atrus just...not show up for some reason? That's weird...seems almost like the game just didn't know what to do with that ending. Must admit, I'm somewhat disappointed that ending 6 doesn't end with Ghen getting darted by the Moiety and dragged off. He is, after all, fully in their stronghold at that point.
Ending 3 triggers if the Star Fissure is opened while the player is not in possession of the Trap Book. This can be achieved by legitimate gameplay as shown (Gehn is in possession of the Trap Book), or by cheating (saving, getting the code, and reloading). The other bad endings show Atrus receiving the Trap Book from the player, so if the player does not have the book in their possession, Ending 3 is the only one that could be shown. It's likely that they realized this was possible during development, and it was easier to just have you fall straight into the Fissure rather than re-record one of the other endings. Funnily enough, Ending 3 is the only one that allows you to technically side with Gehn and survive; if you listen closely, you can hear the linking sound of Atrus' imminent arrival just before you fall in. Ending 6 might make it seem like Gehn intends to single-handedly take down the entire Moeity, but he probably just takes out any guards that are positioned nearby, then retreats back to Riven to discern the linking book's location and return with an army at his back.
My guess is that the Moiety don't keep a constant guard at the linking chamber (after all, there isn't one during our subsequent return), there was just one when we first arrived because the "prisoner" knew we were likely to find the book to Tay after we attempted to set him free. If you think about it, though, setting Gehn free on Tay is probably the worst ending short of signaling Atrus before capturing Gehn: The Moiety will die, Catherine will remain imprisoned, Gehn will get a new Age on which to resettle his loyalists (thereby fulfilling their expectation of being delivered to a better Age for their loyalty), and he will now have free access to the mineral needed to make the Book Windows, giving him much greater freedom to write and subjugate new Ages.

The whole business about being trapped in trap books for eternity is more horrifying than most things horror writers can come up with.
To be fair, it's not canonical, it's been attributed to artistic license in order to make a playable game.

Love how even in the "good" ending you still end up floating endlessly in a void for all eternity. But at least Atrus is grateful for you.
No - at the end Atrus says that his friend is able to go home.
@@123boink Atrus probably thinks his friend's home is the endless eternal void.
@@fluffycritter Considering it's that same endless void that got the Myst book to his friend's hands in the first place it makes sense.
It can't be forever, since the Stranger turns up in two more Myst games.
That “void” leads to earth

How does catherine see gehn in the prison book, but Gehn cannot see us if we trap ourself in the prison book?

For me, this ending is very ominous, just falling into the fissure not knowing what's coming after while regretting not succeeding after all the work.

It would have been nice if Riven 2024 added an ending where you free Catherine before trapping Ghen.
Oops, that could end bad :D
Ending 3 theoretically shouldn't be possible because you get the combination to the telescope in Moiety, from Catherine's journal.
