Thank you much. This is exactly what I needed to learn today. You saved me a lot of trouble.

I was a oiler in a foundry pump it till you see it glistening .
If that assembly was full of Greece, when you went to Greece it probably about 10 shots or pumps.
If the bearings have the seals in them grease and it ain’t gonna do no good because they’re sealed bearings. You have to pull one side of the seal off my deck had them all on it and no grease in it from the factory and no grease in the snowblower from the factory Shoot for snowblower. The drive gear was welded on crooked. The one they replaced. It sent me the replace had the notch in the wrong place had to weld it shut so it would quit falling off while we were using it. The mower deck Decatur fell off the first day we were cutting grass with itauxiliary power, cigarette lighter wire, rip loose and shorted out the fuse. Jack shaft for the snowblower didn’t have enough grease in. It ate the bearings and then it ate two belts and a pulley but another than that it sits in the yard quite good.
Main thing greasing does is push dirt and debris out of bearings.
A lot of our bearings ran in piles of sand do to lack of maintenance.
We had 1 bearing setups on shakeout that had 7 zerks each required 1 pump of grease every 8 hours of run time.
    It cost $32000 in 1980s

    Great video

Donyboy 73 did a video today, offering general agreement with not greasing that zerc fitting. Somebody in the remarks section said that ebay sell cheap spindles, which would be another option for those who don't want to fiddle with bearings. Excellent video, nice to see automotive expertise translate into small engine repair.

Can this entire spindle be replaced with a regular spindle of different type?

Thank you for the video, it helped me replace my bearings. After you have had yours running for a while without greasing the spindle, have you noticed any issues with the spacer not having any grease. I understand the bearings are sealed, but am hesitant to not use grease on mine since it seems like the spacers may be making high speed metal to metal contact with the the face of the bearing and the spindle shaft. I’m just curious if you had any issues without using grease.

After reassembly, did you notice if the shaft has any up and down play in it? Or does it not move any?

Thanks for posting. I purchased a new bearings and housing assembly from PartsTree, but the bearings do not fit in the bottom. It’s just a little too tight to snap in. Any ideas or advice?

Make sure it's good and clean where the bearings go

@@Oldsmob455 it was clean and I lubed it with new grease. The bearings just didn’t fit like they were supposed to. I ended up finding a washer the same diameter as the bearings and used a small gas pipe to hammer them in place. The bearings snapped right into place on the other piece tho.

For the love of god, spray some rust inhibitor under that deck!

I've had to replace my whole spindle assembly about 7 or 8 times now! Its the (2690576) It costs a little over $100 for all new parts. I even had Harmony outdoor (my dealer) replace it the 3rd time. Because it had failed so fast, both times I replaced it. By the time I realized, it had basically screwed up everything! The time they replaced it, it only lasted 2 months. But it was at the end of the year, so they wouldn't do anything since it was the following year. The longest I had it work, was a whole summer. I do not see anything wrong with the deck, I've even replaced it with all new blades,! I am gonna buy a new zero turn soon and let the next guy figure it out! Cause I am done with this damn thing! I could have had about $700 towards a new one by now!

@@panjok2 I am having the same problem. Did you ever get it figured out? I'm over 100 dollars into bearings, spacers, pulley, washers, shaft and nut. All of these parts have been superseded by a slightly different part number. Something is wrong with the design I think. I'm not sure of the correct way to orient the conical washers. I'm giving it another try today with a new pulley, top spacer, washers and nut.

Haha, that greasy unit really made me think of the engineering. Like some kind of tank engineer from the 30s thought it up.
Not to put shame on any engineer from the 30s but still...
