Just added 4 Sunset Honey Gouramis to our heavily planted 90gal discus aquascape, which was our first gourami experience, and we are happy we did! I've always stayed away from these fish but they have been peaceful and their yellow color stands out against all the green. They share the tank with a big group of corys, rummynose, harlequins, rams and a few other small groups - all of whom work well together. They were shy at first and as noted in the video, some of the discus were a little nippy with them in the beginning but once that was sorted out, they have all calmed. These little guys occupy our whole tank, top to bottom, and are not picky eaters. They swim around similar to rams and are a lot of fun to watch them explore the whole tank. Honey gouramis are a dwarf gouramis as are powder blues, neon blues, flame etc.Dwarf is the family type .They come in at least 6 varieties. They mostly max out at 2 and a half inches.Perhaps your "dwarf " is not a dwarf if much bigger. If it is a dwarf you left out his last name. LOL

Amazing fish! I got 2 spawns of these, one of about 30 or so and a month later I got a 2nd spawn this time they had at least a hundred fry. I feed my fry hard boiled egg yolk works very well! Thank you for your video, once again instructive and entertaining.
Thanks for posting this. I didn't know about the colour adaptation before. I have two of the gold variety in a 29 gallon planted aquarium with a light background. My two are considerably lighter than yours. They are also much smaller; about the size of the harlequin rasboras that are also in my aquarium. Interestingly, I have two dwarf gouramis that were there first; these guys are much larger than my honeys. The larger of the two dwarfs occasionally chases the smaller one, but totally ignores the honey gouramis. One other interesting aspect of their colour - when I first got them they were yellow without much other colour. Eventually, the one that grew faster developed a prominent black horizontal stripe, so I now know she's a female.
I just realized you answered part of my question in this video. Still not sure what ratio of females vs males would be best if putting six in a 20G. Thanks for making such informative videos!
I'm cycling a 10 gal right now, and plan to have one of these as the centerpiece. The tank has white sand (for the pygmy corys) and a black background. I'm interested to see how the honey gourami will look with that. I can also turn the background to the blue side, but I don't think that will look that great with yellow/orange. Thanks for the video (and all your other zillions I've watched!)
Know it's been awhile, since you've posted this, but I was looking at the same two species for my wife's office. Did you have any issues? How'd it go for you? Sorry for the random question, 😅.
I have a honey gourami with 7 cardinal tetras in a 10 gallon and they get along nicely! Sometimes the gourami will hog the food, but I usually distract him with different food and feed the cardinals something else. The honey gourami is easily one of my favorite fish now.
Answered the questions I had about grouping. I had tried adding a betta to my 29H community but he was just too grumpy so now he gets to live permanently in my 10 gallon quarantine tank. I'm pulling out the spare tank as the new quarantine and am in the search for a new centre-piece with my harlequin rasboras and cherry barbs. A single honey gourami just may be at the top of my list for now. My other top consideration is a pair or trio of same-sex platys ( I'm not interested in any breeding).
I have a solo HG named Buddy in a 20 with harlequins, neons, pristella tetras and a CPO named Lenny. He and Lenny get into squabbles over the crayfish food and Buddy has even found a way to weasel into the small opening of Lennys coconut hut house. It’s kind of a pain in the a&$ lol but if I pretend to feed more I can redirect Buddys attention (if for a minute) lol 😂 Feeding time is a bit of a challenge. Any suggestions ?
Thanks for another great video. I have 2 Honey Gourami in my 100 gallon community tank. I’d love to add another 4. My quarantine tank is a 7.5 gallon cube. Would you recommend this to quarantine 2 small honey gourami for a month?
People do say (not that I necessarily prefer this) that you can keep a honey gourami long-term in a 5 gallon. So I'd think 2 at a time in a 7.5 would be ok, as a quarantine.
If I put a honey gourami in a 10 gallon with a mystery snail and some shrimp would it get lonely? I've heard they can be really shy if they're the only fish in a tank, but I would love one in there!
Depends on the individual. Some can be shy, but I have a few that are right out in front of the tank. You’ll have to be careful with the shrimp because they will eat smaller shrimp.
I'm just cycling my 90 l. If I decide on honey gourami would it be better to remove the spray bar on my filter. Also could I keep the different colour variety together
I have worried that my single HG is lonely, and would love to know what you think. I've had him or her for a few years. Currently in a 20 gallon with two schools of corydoras (pygmy, napoensis). Decent amount of planting, driftwood etc, but a lot of open space in the tank too. What do you think, Jason, or others who have kept groups - Do they actually LIKE to be together, or just tolerate it? And if they do like it, would it still make sense to add more when this one has been alone for several years? I could potentially switch to a bigger tank, so don't worry about the stocking levels, I'm asking more about the social / enrichment issues.
@@PrimeTimeAquatics Thanks for the advice! I'll probably leave well enough alone then, or if I decide to get more HGs, then I may try them in a different tank, and be prepared to move this one back if it doesn't go well
They look very similar to their more "feisty" cousin, Colisa Lalia. Anyway, they look like a good addition to a small community tank 😀However, like my profile pic sugest, my preference for peacefull gourami goes to the Pearl Gourami 😛Speaking of which, any chance you will do a Pearl Gourami species profile? (or provide a link if you did?) Would be much appreciated 😁
Very helpful video thank you! I have my first gourami right now and want to bring him out of his shell. How come female honey gourami seem impossible to find? Do you see a problem with mixing honey golden and honey red gouramis together?
I had six cobalt dwarf gourami and a Pearl gourami together in a 30 gallon.. The Pearl ruled the roost but I had no aggression. Right now, I have two pearls, and an oapaline in a community with angels and various tetras and have absolutely no aggression. Most “aggressive” fish I have is my pictus catfish and it’s “aggressive” because it eats small fish.
I am in the process of setting up my first big tank, 42 gallon. I have watched many of your videos for research I greatly appreciate you guys. After watching this video now I want mostly honey gouramis but I don’t want them to breed would it be ok to get about 6 males and add some “clean up crew” fish after that?
I'd like to do an aquarium that is centered around honey gouramis (30g cube), but and really don't want them to breed since you can't sell/give them to fish stores in my country. I often read that there's a specific male to female ratio and I know it's more about male aggressivity towards females, but would you confirm that a full female honey gourami group can work as long as there's at least six of them ?
Thanks for the information. I got a few more based on your advice and it definitely helped with aggression issues. But new question. There are 4 total now, 2 bigger original males and 2 tiny new ones, one of the new ones looks like it could be female. Will that ratio be a problem? I.e. 3males 1female
I had 2 paradise fish in my community tank with my Black Widow Tetras , Otos and Amano Shrimp but that combo did not work well so i got 3 Honey Gouramis now in my 29 gallon tank and they do well with the other fish/shrimp
Is there a "Dwarf Honey Gourami?" My local LFS had some labeled as such. They looked similar to Rainbow dwarfs but the colors were lighter with a subtle hint of orange edging.
I've never kept rainbowfish, but my HG is with two schools of corys in a 20g. They keep mostly to the bottom, and she or he keeps mostly to the top, so it works very well!
Hi Prime Time. I’m considering adding Honey Gouramis to my 20G Long and am not sure how many I should add. Currently I only have four Cherry Barbs, a Clown Pleco, snails, shrimp, and plants in the tank. The Honey Gourami at my LFS are pretty young so I can’t tell if they’re male or female, but I assume it’s better to have more females than males? Any suggestions you have will be appreciated. Thank you!
Can you do stocking video on a 44 gallon pentagram tank. It seems nobody talks about tall tanks like octagon or cylindrical tanks due to limited floor space.
I want a gold honey guarami. Can I assume they are the same temperament as the honey? Also I have 10 Celestichthys Choprae which are pretty active, but I'm hoping that will be OK. Lastly I have 20 assorted color cherry shrimp. I don't mind if the fry get eaten, but will they mess with the adults?
Thoughts on a pair vs 1 male + 2 females? Assuming the tank space is sufficient for either, which would the fish "prefer"? I know with live bearers you want more females, not sure if this is a similar situation
@@PrimeTimeAquatics thank you for your response. I already have one but it's empty looking, I know what are my other options but I don't like any of it 😐 Would you recommend cherry Barb with it, how many? Aren't they aggressive?
I have 2 honey’s in my 10 gallon community tank. A Male and a female along with 4 neons, 3 cardinals, 2 rumy nose, 4 otocinclus, 2 halfbeaks and 3 shrimp. Never had an issue, the tank is heavily planted and has rock and wood and a floating betta log.
@@jaredmiller5928 Thank you! It just had me a little confused... FlipAquatics has the colisa luna listed. Just wanted to make sure that it is the same fish.
I bought a pair of gold honeys, they were juvenile, I put them in my 20 gallon guppy tank, good parameters, good feeding, 2 HOB filters and one sponge. They lost color and I lost one in the filter. The other one is hanging on and doing a bit better but I am worried. Any tips?
Hi. Great video about the Honey Gourami. I just added one to my 10 gallon which also has Ember tetras and they get along really well. Any suggestions for which Gourami I could add to my 20 gallon that has 7 Cherry Barbs that are great fish but VERY assertive at feeding time (they always try to steal food from my pleco)? I think a Honey Gourami may end up hiding and not getting enough food. I guess I’m looking for a semi-aggressive Gourami that won’t let the barbs activity (not just at feeding. They’re always active) cause the Gourami to hide. The Pearl Gourami is out since I prefer a larger tank for that sized-Gourami. Thank you.
Just a word of caution based on my experience with a Honey Gourami. I have a 15 gallon planted tank with neon tetras, kjuli loaches, 3 cherry shrimp and 1 mystery snail. I decided to add 1 male Honey Gourami as a centerpiece based on all the recommendations as a peaceful and "sweet" fish. This is the first time in 30 years of experience with aquariums that I decided to take a fish back to the store. This juvenile honey gourami was super bully with the poor mystery snail, harassing the snail all day (except for when I was feeding the tank that the gourami got distracted eating) and then from one day to the next the honey gourami also hunted down all my cherry shrimp. Only one survived with half of the legs missing and hiding all day below a catappa leaf. I immediately returned the gourami back to the store without even asking for a refund. What a bad experience! And was a nightmare to capture the gourami with all the driftwood and plants I have in my tank. Totally regret getting this fish. Maybe you have better luck!
Something really important to note, it looks like the fish you have aren't actually Honey Gourami. Those are Sunset Thick Lipped Gourami. You can tell by the tail. Honey Gourami always have color in their tails, while Thick Lipped Gourami have much clearer tails than their body. From watching the video, I think all of your Gourami have clearer tails. They generally have very similar care requirements, but Thick Lipped Gourami get larger, around 3-4 inches verses the 2 inches that Honey Gourami get, and thus need a bit larger of a tank than Honey Gourami. They can also be a touch more aggressive than Honey Gourami, though they're generally still very peaceful.
I've found these sunset thick lips are actually super tame and interactive. They have the peaceful nature of the honeys but they're not shy. All of mine also used to nip at my hand. They're charming
Wanted to say the same. I have both types in my tank and the orange ones overgrew yellow honeys... They dont interbreed either. All LFS around me sell orange ones as honeys...
@@jaredmiller5928 Mine hand-feed eagerly! I have a harem of 4 thicklips in my 55 gallon tank and they are by far my favorite fish at the moment. Extremely friendly, fun to watch, playful with each other (some chasing and dominance displays but never hurting one another), and interested in coming up to your hands and investigating whenever you come by for tank maintenance or feeding. Totally underrated fish.
How much do you know about Paradise Fish? I have one that I think is female. So far, she's shyer and less active than I expected. I originally planned to keep her with my Giant Danios, but she's clearly afraid of them. Meanwhile, she seems to gets along well with Corydoras (Bronze and Peppered) and Bristlenose Plecos. Any suggestions for tankmates?
Can honey gouramis live with red cherry shrimp i want to get one for my tank with red cherry shrimp chili rasboras and soon kubotai rasboras will the honey gourami be happy my tank is stocked with plants and some drift wood will the honey gourami be happy and will it eat my shrimp because if it does im nit getting it please help me i live your videos❤
@@PrimeTimeAquaticsgood to know anyways it’s been a while wanna tell u I’ve slowed down since my local pet store doesn’t have much of the stuff I was wanting so right know I’m settling with 2-3 honey gouramis in a 20 gallon ( want ur opinion on that) some guppy’s and Pygmy corydoras since my shrimp sadly died off and my ammanos just pick at the filter ur videos have helped me in my beggining learning ty so much❤
I got me one cute one with a dark orange tail, but omg I witness how he bites off and nibbles of all the mini anubias nana’s in his tank; but not the buce
Could we get a profile on the other peaceful gourami you mentioned in this video, the pearl gourami? What are some differences between the two species?
I had 3 thick lipped Gourami which I bought it by mistake (supposed to get T.Chuna), the LFS sold the T. Labiosa as Honey Gourami.. Their bullying is really intense, the bully killed 1 and subsequently struggling from swim bladder (talking about karma) . Water parameters are good, 0 nitrite and ammonia, 1 is flourishing and another struggles. I'm thinking that the LFS had a bad batch and just unlucky enough, I got both of them.
I have a question. If I just get 1 Oscar, what size tank? I have read 55 g, but I think that's for more than 1. This one I have seen at Petsmart and looks like hes had a bite taken out of his back. Even that looks fine. They have supposedly put him in the back. But I still have him on my mind...
I was just at Ohio Fish Rescue and saw the few Oscars that were at least 15” and very large bodied. I had mine in a 125 and thought about moving them to a larger tank.
ok but there's the honey gourami (the small yellow one) and the larger sunset thick lip (sold as red honey gourami) with the latter being about 2x larger than the former. A lot of the images in this vid were the latter as well. Both very similar temperament but different fish
I'm not sure what it is but if my honey gourami sees my ram immediate chase. the ram knows to avoid him but i find it weird that he only acts aggresive toward the ram and none of the other fish. (nothing more than a chase but its every time he sees the ram)

LOL
@@davidhess6899 Honey Gouramis (Trichogaster chuna) are a different species than Dwarf Gouramis (Trichogaster lalius) and are smaller.
Most of the fish I see in the video are in fact Thick Lipped Gouramis (Trichogaster labiosa).
I have one in with Bolivian Rams and I love it. Very beautiful fish. In a 40 gallon breeder
I have a gorgeous red honey gourami in a beautiful 10 gallon tank with two African dwarf frogs and they are doing fantastic together so far! ❤ They enjoy having company with each other
My favorite fish of all time.
The more females the better!
could i keep 3 honey gouramis with 1 pearl gourami?
Would you think keeping adult amano shrimp with a group of honey gouramis would be alright for the shrimp?
I haven’t kept them together so I’m not sure how they do?
I do. No problem
Excellent, my favourite Gourami 👌
I'm cycling a 10 gal right now, and plan to have one of these as the centerpiece. The tank has white sand (for the pygmy corys) and a black background. I'm interested to see how the honey gourami will look with that. I can also turn the background to the blue side, but I don't think that will look that great with yellow/orange. Thanks for the video (and all your other zillions I've watched!)
Know it's been awhile, since you've posted this, but I was looking at the same two species for my wife's office. Did you have any issues? How'd it go for you? Sorry for the random question, 😅.
Blue and yellow are complimentary colours. My blue betta looks stunning when he is in front of the yellow plants in his tank.
Beautiful fish... Beautiful tank. Love the action you get from these fish when they are in a bigger group!
I have a honey gourami with 7 cardinal tetras in a 10 gallon and they get along nicely! Sometimes the gourami will hog the food, but I usually distract him with different food and feed the cardinals something else. The honey gourami is easily one of my favorite fish now.
Really nice video and lovely to see these in a larger group
Can I keep Gourami with my breeding bristlenose plecos ?
Will they pick off the fry?
What can I keep with them?
Thanks so much , love the channel
Ya, the fry will probably go missing
Sometimes when they’ve been alone for a while they don’t accept new honey gouramis as easiest. If it’s been working I’m not sure I would change it.
My HG loved my gold MM platys. He was always with them.
@@papasmerf6453 Aww, how cute!
@@PrimeTimeAquatics Thanks for the advice! I'll probably leave well enough alone then, or if I decide to get more HGs, then I may try them in a different tank, and be prepared to move this one back if it doesn't go well
I had a single honey female in one tank and recently added three sunset. I'm on the hunt for a male honey.
Thank you
I also love the pearls. I have a beautiful pair
So docile.
Should get a female or male
I have one of the Honey Gouramis awesome looking fish 🐠 beautiful color
They look very similar to their more "feisty" cousin, Colisa Lalia. Anyway, they look like a good addition to a small community tank 😀However, like my profile pic sugest, my preference for peacefull gourami goes to the Pearl Gourami 😛Speaking of which, any chance you will do a Pearl Gourami species profile? (or provide a link if you did?) Would be much appreciated 😁
Pearl Gourami is coming soon. Have a group in a 55 gallon that are doing really well!
For a 20 gallon tank, could I do:
1 honey gourami
1 powder blue gourami
10 chili rasbora
6 pygmy corys
3 mystery snails
I would leave out the dwarf - it will bully the honey.
Very helpful video thank you! I have my first gourami right now and want to bring him out of his shell. How come female honey gourami seem impossible to find? Do you see a problem with mixing honey golden and honey red gouramis together?
You can miss them together without any issues - I have before!
I wouldn’t worry too much about them breeding. Fry won’t survive - the parents will eat the fry.
Ya that can work. I would not worry about them breeding though. The fry will be eaten by other fish in a community tank most likely.
Thanks for the information. I got a few more based on your advice and it definitely helped with aggression issues. But new question. There are 4 total now, 2 bigger original males and 2 tiny new ones, one of the new ones looks like it could be female. Will that ratio be a problem? I.e. 3males 1female
Probably not, but worth keeping an eye on.
@PrimeTimeAquatics thanks again 🙂
Will one work with shrimp? I imagine they will pick off some babies but not wipe an established colony?
I personally don’t trust them with shrimp. Haha
Yeah. I am going to put mine in my 20g high with neon tetras
I had 2 paradise fish in my community tank with my Black Widow Tetras , Otos and Amano Shrimp but that combo did not work well so i got 3 Honey Gouramis now in my 29 gallon tank and they do well with the other fish/shrimp
Good to hear!
Is there a "Dwarf Honey Gourami?" My local LFS had some labeled as such. They looked similar to Rainbow dwarfs but the colors were lighter with a subtle hint of orange edging.
Nope - just. a regular honey gourami.
How would these guys do in a 75gal tank with Australian Rainbow fish/kuhli loach/corydoras?
You mentioned not keeping them with other gourami fish. Any concerns you can see with Pearl gouramis in a 75?
Those two would be the most likely to get along - especially in that size tank.
They will probably leave the adults alone. The golds are just as chill as the reds.
Thoughts on a pair vs 1 male + 2 females? Assuming the tank space is sufficient for either, which would the fish "prefer"? I know with live bearers you want more females, not sure if this is a similar situation
For these fish it doesn't matter as much. I have had both combos and it seemed to work out either way.
I got one dwarf yellow gourami they get only 1.5" maximum, how many would you recommend in 10 gallon tank? it is established planted tank.
I only do one in a ten gallon tank.
@@PrimeTimeAquatics thank you for your response. I already have one but it's empty looking, I know what are my other options but I don't like any of it 😐
Would you recommend cherry Barb with it, how many? Aren't they aggressive?
Will a group of honeys do well with schools of rummy nose, cardinals and lemon tetras?
I think that’s a good combo!
Do you have any powder blue gouramis in your fish room? The females stay absolutely tiny and are very peaceful. Lots of color too!
Yes - we have one in a 20 gallon in Joanna’s nano nook. 😀
Hey guys! Was wondering if you thought zebra or leopard danios would be ok tank mates in a 20 gallon long with one of the honey gouramis?
Should work just fine!
Can I keep pearl and honey gourami together in a 30 gallon
Possibly - never know 100%, but both a pretty mellow.
I have 2 honey’s in my 10 gallon community tank. A Male and a female along with 4 neons, 3 cardinals, 2 rumy nose, 4 otocinclus, 2 halfbeaks and 3 shrimp. Never had an issue, the tank is heavily planted and has rock and wood and a floating betta log.
im kinda new to the hobby and am wondering if a gourami and a small school of chili rasboras would be good in a ten gal
Is there a difference between Trichogaster chuna and the Colisa chuna? I'll been trying to find them in my area for weeks. Thanks for the great video!
No difference, just different naming I think colisa is from the past and the most updated is Trichogaster
@@jaredmiller5928 Thank you! It just had me a little confused... FlipAquatics has the colisa luna listed. Just wanted to make sure that it is the same fish.
Can you keep harlequin rasboras with these?
For sure!
@@PrimeTimeAquatics yay thank you!
I bought a pair of gold honeys, they were juvenile, I put them in my 20 gallon guppy tank, good parameters, good feeding, 2 HOB filters and one sponge. They lost color and I lost one in the filter. The other one is hanging on and doing a bit better but I am worried. Any tips?
I usually start with water parameters. If zero ammonia and nitrite the one that is left might be scared or sick.
Thank you.
Honey gourami would be the only one I would add.
@@PrimeTimeAquatics Thanks for responding!
Thank you for all your advice I found very valuable
Sounds more like a golden gourami temperament
I had stock mixed from to different vendors. It looks like some of the fish are thick lip.
Wanted to say the same. I have both types in my tank and the orange ones overgrew yellow honeys... They dont interbreed either. All LFS around me sell orange ones as honeys...
Yep, these are thicklips. Absolutely wonderful, interactive, friendly fish if you're looking for a larger alternative to honey gouramis.
How would a group of these do in a 75 gal with a couple Electric Blue Acara? Bad idea?
Nope, that could work well.
How small of a tank could you go with these if by themself.
A 10 gallon should work well.
They are nice fish. So we’ll in a cool water environment. They tend to behave a lot like bettas in regard to their temperament.
They might eat baby shrimp, but will probably leave the adults alone?

It just depends on the individual fish.
They are pretty and sound like wonderful fish.
What kind of driftwood is that on the right side of the tank? It almost looks purple! 💜
That is manzanita
I got me one cute one with a dark orange tail, but omg I witness how he bites off and nibbles of all the mini anubias nana’s in his tank; but not the buce
Are Chili Rasboras a good option to keep with a honey gourami? Also do you know any places online that sell female honey gouramis?
That combo can work. I'm not sure about anywhere that will guarantee a female honey. Maybe a local fish store?
I have one with my 18 Chilies. They're perfect tank mates.
Could we get a profile on the other peaceful gourami you mentioned in this video, the pearl gourami? What are some differences between the two species?
Coming soon!
I could never get used to the antenna thingys on the bottom of the fish
It would be weirder if they were on top. Haha

Probably
could I keep one honey gourami with 7 tetras and 5 guppies in a 25 Gallon?
Most likely it would work as long as you aren't dealing with the aggressive tetra types.
Could a honey gourami live in a 5 gallon tank by themself?
I think they do better in at least a 10 gallon.
@@PrimeTimeAquatics Thank you, I've had somebody else say they would do fine in a 5, but it didn't seem right.
Can I put them with rainbows?
Sure
I have a question. If I just get 1 Oscar, what size tank? I have read 55 g, but I think that's for more than 1. This one I have seen at Petsmart and looks like hes had a bite taken out of his back. Even that looks fine. They have supposedly put him in the back. But I still have him on my mind...
I was just at Ohio Fish Rescue and saw the few Oscars that were at least 15” and very large bodied. I had mine in a 125 and thought about moving them to a larger tank.
@@PrimeTimeAquatics Okay, then I was right in not "rescueing" him.👍 It would have just been him. I do know John has his in a 350?
Can you keep them with pearl gouramis?
Thought to say. Neither one are very aggressive but any time you’re mixing different gouramis there’s always a chance for bullying.
ok but there's the honey gourami (the small yellow one) and the larger sunset thick lip (sold as red honey gourami) with the latter being about 2x larger than the former. A lot of the images in this vid were the latter as well. Both very similar temperament but different fish
Ya, I got stock from multiple sources and some look like young thick lips

I'm not sure what it is but if my honey gourami sees my ram immediate chase. the ram knows to avoid him but i find it weird that he only acts aggresive toward the ram and none of the other fish. (nothing more than a chase but its every time he sees the ram)
Fish can be weird like that some times. Must see him as a threat.
Yeah, they are roughly the same size and all the rest in the tank are pretty small in comparison.
