@Blue The ship one in the Japanese version is just unfairness in my opinion. If you overstep, you have to intentionally kill yourself or let the time run out.
@@HelloHamburger Unfortunately the change makes the level completely trivial because you can swim under the boats. Falling off the boats should just kill you immediately. It's lava anyway, you shouldn't be able to swim in it to begin with.
They didn't really make it easier. Japan typically tested the games on the Japanese market first before releasing in the US since the gaming market was still recovering from Atari. These were more like patches to make the player experience better...the intro of video game rentals actually had developers make US games harder (Castlevania 3's US version is harder than the Japanese release for example)
I've beat it all in 1 sitting without warps once but none have snes where you can save and beat it another time, with warps I beat it without dying in about 15 minutes
It's a common misconception that changes like these are done because the game is "too hard for Americans". You have to remember that it wasn't possible to update a game after release at the time. Localization was an opportunity for developers to make post-launch revisions to gameplay that they could no longer make in the Japanese version. These revisions are usually kept in future Japanese releases as well. For example, the Mario All-Stars version.
There’s a difference between “challenge” and “this is actually bullsh!t, let’s make sure we remove that if the game gets a remastered version.” For this case, I feel like all the changes to the American version are justified. Losing ALL of your power ups because you touched ONE enemy is garbage. Having to restart the entire level because you got stuck on the airship is garbage.
@@sO_RoNerY What I'm saying is that whether you agree with them or not, the changes made were effectively an official balance patch that was applied to all future releases of the game. If the Mario 3 had come out in modern times then no doubt these changes would have also been applied to the Japanese version via an online update. But because this wasn't possible they kept all Japaneses copies on the older version so that the experience was consistent in that market.
Another change they made was changing the ending to 5-1. In the Famicom version, the player has to enter a pipe at the end of the main level in order to end the level, but in releases outside Japan, the level simply ends in the same sub-area that the player started in. Because the ending for the level is in the same sub-area as the hidden bonus in the Famicom version, this meant that if you flew over the walls in the ending area, you could cause the treasure box to spawn alongside some pretty funny looking graphical glitches. Of course, they fixed this glitch by having the ending be in the same sub-area as the main level when localizing the game outside of Japan; and subsequent remakes of the game would use this layout alongside most of the other changes implemented in the non-Japanese localizations across all regions.
I mean Rockman 2 on Famicom originally didn't have a difficulty select which was added in the NES release of Mega Man 2 so this aint out of the ordinary for the Famicom version being harder
@Willinat: The reason why it is like that as nothing to do on making it easier. The only reason why it was like that because during the NES Super mario bros.2 was different in the north american version compare to the Japanese version of Super mario bros.2 they where called the same game but they where different game. Since the American version they got the mario version of doki doki panic with damage always take one HP even if you got 3 or 4 So that is why Super mario bros.3 behave like this in the US and Canada and Europe. In Japan since Super mario bros.2 where just harder level of super mairo bros. they still got if you got the 3rd power-up or higher meanin 3 Hp or higher you take damage once you have one HP left. Since they where used to play it that way. The original plan in Japan after Super mario bros. they where making Super Mario bros.2 with the vegtable tossing to be release in Japan but they could only make it vertical scrolling but they prefer to have it both way vertical scrollin and horizontal scrolling but not both at the same time. It would be boring for mario to toss vegtable at enemies on vertical scrolling level only. Since they did not have the technologie at the time they could not finish it, however when the technologie came in the FC disk system it was already too late the creator brought the same plan already to make Yumi Kojo Doki Doki panic for the family computer disk system. They did not have a Super mario Bros. 2 so they took the Sequal to VS. Super mario bros. that was already finish but not release as an arcade and re-work it as Super mario bros.2 for the Family computer disk system. They added the higher jump and high bounce on enemies since the arcade version of hit would not have the high bounce on enemies. They send the game to the US but it fail because it was too hard or probebly not properly tested since because it behave like Super mario bros. the tester probebly thought they where no high bounce on enemies so never attempted to se if one actually work. And then it become another problem their was not a Super mario bros. 2 game for outside of Japan since the people outside of japan refuse to sell it outside of Japan. The people that made the doki Doki panic game did have no intention to sell it world wide so they give Nintendo the permision to make Doki doki panic with Super mario Character so it could sell as Super mario bros.2 outside of Japan and the same previous tester approve this one.
The air fortress is more of an oversight than difficulty related. I seem to recall the American SNES version powering down to small Mario if you had a power up, not sure though. I beat it on NES and Mario would turn small, so either there were 2 revisions or I was playing modified rom since it was on a flash cart.
The reason for the gap displacement on the spike roof is because you need to be more precise instead of just running up to the wall and getting stopped by it. On NES Virtual Console, it’s the Japanese version of games translated into English
I accidentally got the Japan rom of SMB3 for emulating and was confused because I could've sworn when you get hit you go back to super mario
The ship is taller but you still can reach it, you are not doom
Oh... So for a long time...I didn't realize I played Japanese version in SNES and beated it..
i noticed this in Megaman 2, there’s a special “hard mode” but it’s the exact same as the original japanese game
