MN couple turns grain bin into urban brewery, store & venue

- Sandy and Jay Boss Febbo looked for a location to open their microbrewery, they were looking for something within their self-financed budget. They approached architect Geoffrey Warner, known for his prefab designs (WeeHouse, LightHotel) who suggested a grain bin. It was a perfect fit for the Boss Febbos who with their organic brews were dedicated to “land stewardship and farmworker health” and liked the idea of this very visible homage to the farm.
Using a 42-foot-round, prefabricated, corrugated-metal grain bin, Warner cut plenty of windows and used the grain entry point as a skylight so the 1300-square-foot structure reflects the light of the day like a sundial. By using multi-functional furniture, mostly on wheels and stackable, the couple finds the small space large enough for brewing, packing, tasting, and events. Located in an industrial zone of St Paul, the bin, with R-28 insulation, easily weathers the Minnesota winters.

What an absolutely charming brewery, of beautiful and elegant design. All that remains is to try the beer!
Their wildflower prairie space today is just lovely! This is such a cool place!
I love everything BANG Brewing: Great people, great place, great ethos and great beer. I work at a bottle shop just a couple miles south of them where we get personal delivery from Sandy herself!
Kirsten, I love your channel. Thanks for taking us to see so many cool people & their wonderful places.
Your guests (and their architect & furniture designer friend) have put an incredible amount of thought into this project. The running commentary she gave was fascinating and full of clear reasoning & detail. Hope the business is a HUGE success and they go on to replicate similar micro breweries all around the rural/farming communities that have a thirst for the Amber Liquid.
They are from a booming metropolitan area which just held the Superbowl. This is all agenda 2030 hyper marketing.
Beer is neat, and all, but there is nothing "rural" about this expensive academic exercise.
Ray OfMinneapolis, hey, they built it with their money. Live and let live. After all, it was empty space with no existing value, and now it’s a viable business.
Yep. I'm just jealous.
+Ray OfMinneapolis : I guess you have the advantage of local knowledge Ray. I'm a rank outsider living at the other end of the earth and was just commenting on the content revealed in the video. I had no idea there was some sort of hidden agenda, so will be more cautious in expressing my naive enthusiasm for such apparently marvellous business ideas.
I like how they use that mirror as a...”shelf.” genius
The woman is a great spokesperson for a great space.
So glad to see this posted Kristen! You guys did a great job capturing the feel of the property and surrounding area. I was a part of the landscape/shelter installation and still learned a few things from the video. I'm excited to see the prairie fill out over the next couple of years, it will really change the feel of the space.
This is innovative, exciting and perfect for the MN area or anywhere that has grain silos. Great commentary on the design and use of space. Would love to go visit!
Kristen, as always, you deliver awesome content. Sandy and Jay have an exciting and unique micro-brewery! I love it!!
Will be visiting the Twin Cities area this spring, and now have a new diversion to add to the itinerary. :-)
Thanks for the excellent interview and tour.
i love the way you film these just perfect keep up the goood work!
I GET EXCITED WHEN YOU HAVE A NEW VIDEO, GREAT CONTENT AND WELL MADE!
Very inspiring use of space and readily available materials!
Beautiful! I would even love to see them buy that tractor trailer on the edge of there property and cut the side out to make a covered band stand for bands to play live music.
Beautifully done. Multipurpose and functionality. Brilliant! 👍
The aerial shots are beautiful.
Outstanding ! Functional sculpture ! A Beer Mecca for sure. 🍻
Wonderful! Living their dream! Go Vikings-
Don't know these folks, but I love them. And yeah, beer is nice too.
I always thought they repurposed that building, I had no idea that's how it was built. Very interesting
Wow, fantastic free thinking design! Respect ✊
I really enjoyed this!
I really enjoyed that vid, thanks Team Bang Brewery!
wow that table is super nice
Love this, especially being from Mpls, MN.
I love this channel ❤️
Love that they're organic.
its amazing use of space and design. town planning and civil engineers can take a cue....
So coo! Infinite inspiration
Really cool!!!! Might wanna rope off or build a partial wall for the hot and cold side though. Well done guys!!!!
A name for the rolling bar:
"The Reverse Mullet Bar - party in the front, business in the back".
Very cool!!
Thanks for all these ideas. As a developer, we could definitely influence our tenants to design spaces like these in Manila.
That is brilliant
Very very cool!
Wow amazing
The Pantheon oculus is the first thing I thought of as well. This concept certainly expands architecturally the realm of the possible for creating living spaces. Could it be used in forested areas, in cold climates, would rain be too noisy, how about if it were covered in wood shingles?
great job
I love it :)
I'm surprised they can mill out in the open like that. All other milling I've seen occurs in a concrete block shelter. The fine dust is highly flammable.
Fantastic - I'd love to know what the locals think of the brewery...
"A circle is the most efficient use of space" 😳
u sure that flat tray mirror isn't for cutting the Cc?
Please...an urgent Question. Currently building a new brewery in SeouL, Korea.
My understanding is that for the summer time... HVAC system for Brewery facility is of no problem since Fermenters and brites tank will be GLYCOL jacketed.
But I learned that when brewing ALE beer types(which is mostly the case for craft brewing) the temperature shouldn't fall below 10 degrees Celsius during winter.
Thus, my question is 1) is it necessary to install some sort of overall heating system for the brewing environment? If so, what type of system?
2) And if it gets installed. Does it have to be turned on 24-7? I reckon it would be waste of electricity cost and all.
How did you insulate the roof? Is the corrugated material on the interior walls of a lighter grade than the outside? Did you get it from the silo company? If not, can you just bend it to shape? How did you fasten it to the outer layer?
good brewery
did they say "grain bins" ?
cool place
Build one in my place please!!
Should have had the builders describing how they built it! The owner is obviously an office guy
Empty in it's Fullness. Like Natures' Pantomime... Bang ! 22418
Nice place. I'm surprised it's not littered with tech. Cameras and screens at least. But I guess if your primary view is warehouses and train tracks, better off with the view inside.
How was the Silo Insulated?
From the architect's website: "The brewery features a custom made insulated glass skylight, spray urethane insulation (R-28), in-floor heat beneath the high-strength, polished concrete floors."
Thank you
With money. Tons and tons of money.
All those words in reply to a joke? lol. I think that "Namaste" was super passive aggressive. How ironically cringey.
Listen, fake hippy, whenever you attribute motive, usually you're projecting. "Namaste"
NIGHTSKY BREWERY approval....
"Inhabit the idea!"
Cool but I'd hate to try to cool that place on a hot summer day.
Put a design on that screen door, cause someone is going to walk through it.
6:29 Hey? waidaminnit..
! Unix/Linux nerds. love it more now
1300 Square Feet lol
Watchout portland!
There are barrels of wasted space.
compering a grain silo to The Pantheon... facepalm.
Debt is the rapist of dreams.
They have made a very nice brewery.
Bu at some points they speak as if they are high or have no idea what they are saying.
Wrong the most efficient use of space is a Hexagon.
Declan Gallagher explain
@Ray What does that have to with anything else here?
For many rooms or buildings a Hexagon might be the most efficient form to build. But in relation between area and wall length the circle is the most efficient. Also in heating/cooling and material needed.
Firstly I was asking you what your comment: "geo-hexa Nero linguistic programming. Grant speak. James J money bags." has to do with the video or the comment you answered to.
"We" are not pretending anything. And the Video I was watching was about a grainsilo, wich is a cylinder not a geodesic dome. So whats your point?
maxe read Buckminster Fullers book, "Ideas and Integrities".
Lol before he starts pretending this is a religious experience, the detailing, essentially the only architectural invention, is not at all convincing. Good concept but lets not get ahead of ourselves XD
Okay I'll take a step back, the detailing the woman was talking about displays a lot of passion and clever thinking.
