Tesla Model Y Rim Rash Repair - DIY!

  • Our one month old Tesla's rim got scraped and "rashed" when someone who will remain nameless (not me) got too close to the curb...and a YELLOW curb at that. We ruined our Tesla?!!
The pain! I cried. Todd dropped a very rare curse word. He tried to convince me "It could be worse." I can't tell you how many times I nagged him about being careful with the rims. I read so many posts about this happening and I didn't want to become a statistic. But we did.
I needed time to cool off, I saw an opportunity for a great DIY how-to video. If I ruined it in the process, then plan B would be a professional.
I purchased Zink Wheel repair kit:
    Uberturbine Wheels
    amzn.to/3VYbxlf
    Induction Wheels
    amzn.to/3HS0NPo
    Gemini
    amzn.to/41ePOX1
Diablo Wheel Cleaner by Chemical Guys
    amzn.to/42szLpO
I began by cleaning the rim. I had just received my ‪@ChemicalGuys‬ Diablo Wheel Cleaner, so I mixed some of that up and went to town. Really happy with the way the Diablo Wheel cleaner, cleaned the wheel. Good job Chemical Guys!
Then it was time to sand. When sanding you have to remove all the texture/bumps from the chipped paint. Get that rim to be smooth. This took some time and patiences. After I got it as smooth as I could, I wiped it off with rubbing alcohol and a lint free wipe.
The paint matched up really well. I probably should have used more on my brush to begin with. As you see in the video I covered my entire wheel. THIS IS NOT NECESSARY! I totally forgot this was a paint and not a spray. DUH! But oh well.
Overall I am very happy with how it turned out. It will hold me off from running out to a wheel person. Wheel repair people said they would charge $150, which to me isn't bad. The bad part is I would be without my car for an entire day, and time is money too! So being able to do this on my own, and hold off on a professional repair, to me is worth it.

Fixed it like a pro. I honestly can't see where it was damaged in the after shot. There are shops that will repair and refinish a curb damaged wheel professionally, but this looks just as good.

Thank you so much. I had it serviced at Tesla yesterday and the service person thought I did a good job too!

it was tiny. After watching this and seeing the area you had to sand down to make smooth I was positive you had made the wrong decision. In the end it came out ok but again it was such a tiny area but nice video and product it seems.

How do you know when yo use the other sanding grits, did you use both 80 and 240?

It depends on how deep the scratch is...if it is super deep I would start with the rougher pads, then move up to the more fine pads.

@@kimberly.thomason that’s fine but just don’t think you’re saving the environment by driving one because they’re actually more harmful than gasoline vehicles.

No worries. I didn’t get it to save the environment. I got it because it’s fun to drive and I enjoy it.
