So many good friends in Brooklyn. What a place !
Wonderfully understated.. what a cool guy and system.. thanks
That was awesome!!! I've wanted to see John's setup for a long time, Thanks John & Steve!
Thank you Steve and John! Great gear!
John has a very good speaking voice for presentations!
Wow, what a beautiful system. Thanks!
Really nicely thought out system... Presented with passion by John. Thanks for sharing this.
Thanks for mentioning the rack builder. Very thorough. Very nice.
Amazing John. Thank you again Steve. Love our hobby. Awesome meeting these like minded people
A really nice presentation John, thank you. Man, he has some top gear, a wide range at that, nice shelving unit, seemingly a very tidy dedicated listening space, a beautiful cat, all presented so well on video. John has checked all of Steve's boxes. How does a guy follow this? 😂
Real classy system, and a music lovers dream. Gotta hear his speakers one day.
It's good to be the King
thanks for this moment...
Super cool! John, thanks, kept the best for later, I guess? Thanks to you too Steve
Wow what an interesting view from a very knowledgeable guy. Love his system!
I love the way he changes up the system. I only change speakers but this gives me some ideas.
Great set up. Congratz. Love this series
Maybe I am a bit voyeuristic, but I am really enjoying this series of videos. Thanks for sharing.
Steve’s in-home video’s are my favorite too. I enjoy seeing both the systems and the overall decor of the listening rooms.
I love seeing others systems and rooms. I have yet to see 2 systems that were exactly the same. I also enjoy seeing how people setup and stlye their rooms.
Me too!
So cool! Thanks for sharing.
Great Video. Caught Jana’s video on John’s system and it has awesome sound as well. Thanks for keeping us entertained in this trying time.
Peace
Love that EMT preamp. I want one!
High fidelity is a never ending journey.
Thanks for sharing. Beautiful system!
Thanks! My pleasure.
Very Nice, Can only imagine how good this must sound..
Just as one would anticipate.... A system built with obvious audiophile passion, but also carefully thought through and assembled to a specific set of requirements. Enlightening. Thanks for sharing the Monkey House system :)
John DeVore speakers rock! Literally.
Excellent video. I love how you guys are working together on each other’s channels.
Don Hamlin we are a community
I found a retailer in Shaker Heights who sold Devore and I had never heard of them till this winter and now I see him on your channel....the speaker world is fascinating
Lovely set up👍❤️
I was happy to see that Halo-A21 in your system because I once owned one too. It’s a great piece and honestly sometimes regret selling it.
Thanks Steve
Wow! This one is a big thumbs up. John has exquisite taste. I would love to see Michael Fremer (Analog Planet & Stereophile) let loose on John's set up.
Thanks David!
Very nice system. The JPA 66 is a great looking amp.
Awesome! The legendary John Devore’s system. So cool to see the gear and workings of his rig are just beautiful and so well thought out. No wonder his speakers sound so good, besides the fact he’s a brilliant designer. The way he’s got that belt hooked up to the volume knob on his preamp to control it via a remote is such a great idea, which I believe I saw in another vid or interview with him.
Thanks, Steve and thank you, John.
Nick Pantazi looks cool also:)
Doug G
Definitely, no doubt about that! 🔊🙂
This dude has very chill aesthetics...
John, real nice job with the video. Real easy and enjoyable with lots of unique stuff.
Thank you.
Great video quality!
I find what people have in their systems interesting, even though Steve’s reviewers seem to be on the high end of the scale, and have gear from companies that I’ve never heard of before now.
Beautiful
Daaaaaaang. That is some gorgeous gear.
I hear you!
John is a cool dude...his system is too.
Some guys have all the gear. Beautiful system.
I'd like to see more of the speakers from the speaker builder. Thank you.
Check out the Devore fidelity website
Very interesting 😊
wow what a phono preamp quite sophisticated .
I really did not need to know about more très cool gear I can’t afford! 😂 Good stuff, thanks!
“I’ve lusted after this preamp...”
I can relate.
I am a DeVore 0/96 and Airtight 300R owner.
Hey Mark!
I think this would be a very interesting set of videos, having the engineers and designers who actually make these products show us what their personal systems are.
Killer system my friend i bet Pin k Floyd would Rock on that system Drooling!!!!!!
That EMT preamp looks amazing and I don't know much about these products. I think it's over $20K...but wow, probably worth it.
👍👍👍🎶 what fun!
I've got the 096s. Always wondered what John looks like.
I love that preamp. He can do a video on just how he adjusts the preamp for different records, including but not limited to his 78's.
Variable equalization for records was what made Marantz. It is cool to see a modern version of that crazy Marantz preamp with the rudimentary (by comparison) but revolutionary equalization selector.
I do plan on doing a video of just the preamp at some point on my channel.
@@DeVOREFIDELITY Thanks. Just subscribed.
If you're a music guy add one point.
A vinyl guy add two points.
A furniture guy add a point.
A speaker builder that uses fltch-matched tree trunks add 3 points.
A cat guy add a point.
All cables by AQ subtract one half point (nobody's perfect)
If you specified "digital cables" add one half point. 🤓
Good at editing add 10 points....11actually. It is one more innit.
Thank you S.G. for the eclectic decor of your channel. 👉🏼👍🏼👈🏼
Finn McCool he could have added 5 with a lava lamp.
Minus 5 for cable risers.
@@zogzog1063 if you see any cable risers.....disqualified! 😄
Ha! Finally Steve's video for the day. Thx!
Love the vu meters on the pre-amp
Me too!
RS1500US right on, just the best analogue front end !
Lovely. Thx John.
Usually I quibble at stereo system choices but your setup is excellent and well thought out. I guess my only suggestion is finding a used Mark Levinson No 331-334. They don’t get “rave” reviews however I find them to be extremely well sorted power amps even if they are getting to the 20 year old range.
They also qualify as doubling in power from 8-4-2 ohm impedances mentioned in one of your rant videos on speaker sensitivity.
2:51 Can you please tell us about the motorisation of the volume knob? I've never seen this before!
Nice 👍
Rule number 1 all internet videos must contain a minimum of 1 cat.
I agree with this rule.
Yep
My kitty Mimi thinks your system rocks; I’m inclined to agree!
I think a puppy would be good too. Agadmator (chess) and Mentour Pilot (aviation) both have pooches.
Cats rule.
Man! I love this hobby.
That's a very nice system. I'm also a fan of the Garrard 401, Air Tight, and of course Devore Orangutan speakers. I respect EMT, but cost no object would run a 4-box dual mono CH P1 phono stage
A video about your reel to reel player would be great!
I would try a naim amp too in the syystem. I have a Naim Uniti Star I love. Also maybe something with higher end class D like a Mola mola and mytek is coming out with some nicer Class D amps soon that will be their more referance stuff they have not invented yet.
Excellent gear John and thanks for sharing. I currently run a Belter (VPI) but I do intend to add a SP10 Mk2 as a DD turntable to my system as I have a few friends who have them and they are superb especially with the Tenuto platter mat. Did you mention what your R2R was?
It's a Technics RS-1500 with some mods.
Where is Fat Rat? 👀
His hero right here, ever since meeting John in Sydney.....can't believe he's missed this episode.
Thank you fellas 😊
even with the leben 300 the 096 sound near perfect.
Great run down on the EMT pre amp! Not sure when I'll get to listen to one, but can you point me in the direction the remote looking add on for the volume control..... I could use one. Many thanks.
Cat comes in handy for wiping things ;)
wow. what a system and a nice cat to boot.
Very cool...how about a sound demo?
🤩
That EMT tho!
So drool-worthy. I never thought I'd be able to have one, but when the president of EMT retired he wanted some speakers, so a barter became possible...
Sweet cat
Great video ...just wondering does Nori still sell his build's or should in say will Nori still build upon request ? Thanks for the tour loved it ....
Great audio setup. Can you pls tell me were I can buy EMT preamp?
Great speaker builder
Thanks G W
John didn't mention much about his new Orangutan Reference speaker system (4 box) shown at about 4:38 into the video. I heard these at Tone of Music in San Francisco last year. It was one of the best audio systems I've ever experienced.
More than anything, what does LuluBear think? Seriously, that preamp fascinates me.
Lulu Bear loves the system. If she didn't I'd have to fix it.
Now he is an audiophile!
True.
EMT phono 🤤
Almost 8 minutes, and this guy didn't say even one word about the best stuff: the R2R behind him.
I only covered the core of the system--I'll put more focused and detailed videos on gear over at the DeVore Fidelity channel.
How do you keep Lulu Bear from scratching the grill close or this or the speaker cabinets or worse?
John, have you gotten a chance to audition the Western Electric 911-E integrated amp yet? Not only is it supposed to sound incredible, it's Beautiful art statement. I'm sure that any of your speaker models would do it justice.
would love to know the material used for the 401 plinth???
You didn't mention the Technics R2R nor the Theta(?)...
Noriyasu Komuro 👌🏼.. SP10 Mk2 and Garrard 401 are solid workhorses that are hard to beat. I hope John replaced the Lytics in those older Pass amps. I remember the Aleph 30 sounding really sweet with Dynaudios (that have a flattish impedance even if hard to drive..)
Yes, I re-capped the A3, and with Nelson Pass' guidance, modded the input stage to JFETs configured like his newer First Watt designs.
Had two interrelated questions: How big is the listening space in the Monkeyhaus office? And related to that, how long of a run is your trusty A23 speaker cables? I have a similar listening space, rectangular, speakers on short wall, source/control on back right side wall in a relative bass null. Currently doing the long IC run to amp between speakers. Looking to replace speakers and O/96s are on the very, very, very short list. Given your history with A23 speaker cables (seem to be in every picture of Monkeyhaus regardless of speakers or position) was thinking of mimicking your long speaker cable run. Would probably be 6M run for me to allow for playing with speaker position, got to think you are running something even longer.
The Monkeyhaus room is about 26 x 15 feet, and my speaker cable runs are 6 meters. The speakers are set up about 1/3 of the way out into the room from one short wall, and the listening position is about 1/3 out from the other short wall behind it.
Speaking of racks, would anyone of you install a wheel/casters for convenience?
Nice video Steve. Wonderful equipment, this guy likes his tubes, that's for sure. Interesting, I'm not a New Yorker, but I find in a lot (not all.) videos from yourself and others it seems that less than 50% of New Yorkers own McIntosh equipment. Do you find that true or am I my wrong? Considering where it's made you'd think that wouldn't be. May I ask what's your opinion on McIntosh audio equipment? No, I don't own any, and I'm not looking to buy in the near future. My opinion is about average. I don't think they're bad or fantastic either.
That 50% number doesn't sound right to me. Mac isn't THAT popular here or elsewhere. No company is that dominant with audiophiles.
@@SteveGuttenbergAudiophiliac
I meant LESS than 50%. Maybe I should have given a much lower percentage number. No, I wouldn't expect any audio company to be any where near that 50% number. I'm not out to bash them. I have friends with Mac systems (preamps, amps) that sound very good. Have they gotten a bad rap over the years for some reasons? Or were they never really "in the game" with audiophiles?
Why not mentioning the Technics real-2-real? Is that just an eye candy? 😉
Not enough amps, definitely needs more amps ;)
I agree!
🤣🤣
I'm a huge fan of pass labs amps and I think you need a variety of first watt amps. The j2, mx2, f7, sit amps and the xa 25. I have come close to buying one of them pass labs aleph 3 so many times.all the aleph series amps are classics! Perhaps when I get my aleph j diy audio clone built. Hope to see more of a tour of the speakers you use in the room in the future with that system. Thanks john😀
What no LP12?
Hey John, I think you should stop "Messing Around" & get a few more Audio Components in your Shop! I'm pretty sure that you don't have the equipment to play the Bootleg Dead Album "Live from Planet Mars" (It was mixed on a 1 of a kind Custom Built Martian Mixer) (& Garcia"s not around to confirm He's aware of the Recording,: Or to confirm He remembers playing in a Band)
So many amps, not a single CD player?
Sorry for being ignorant, but why all the amps? Wouldn't just one be enough.
Dont like your reel to reel? You didnt mention it..
I'll do more in-depth videos on my system on the DeVore Fidelity channel. I was trying to keep this one down to a reasonable length.
DeVORE FIDELITY , John it is fascinating to have guys like you around. I enjoy talking to Richard Vandersteen when he comes into town and visits my local shop to do product demos. I have never heard DeVore speakers and I look forward to the opportunity to hear a pair. Thanks for doing this.
Yikes! those EMT preamps go for 25K!
