It's not so much about changing the sound as it is about breaking the sticks less often
I’ve been playing drums for a little under 3 decades now and it’s a huge difference in sound. I would do that as I was a teen/young man but then when I was like 25 I found out they make sticks that don’t have the thinner tip they’re called Timbale sticks, I felt like a complete idiot that they’ve been around since drums were probably invented and I just learned about them in 2014… anyway I get that thicker abusive pounding sound, and no weak points in the stick, win/win

It's impressive how heavy the sticks are that Evgeny is using, on top of that he's using the sticks backwards and is still fast af doing that. Evgeny is definetly one of the best Meta-Drummers living out there right now.
