Great musicality, story telling and amazing complete mastery of the instrument! Very inspiring. I enjoy your playing very much, thank you mr. Klein for sharing with us!
Very enjoyable to listen too... thanks you! Oboe was my chosen instrument in late elementary and some of high-school. I just regret quitting by grade 11, especially when I hear such wonderful playing !!
I listened to so much of your oboe playing when I was in middle school and high school to learn how to sound but I was really turned off by what you were doing at the end of this recording. Why the multiphonic? It doesn't fit with the rest of it at all.
Thank you for your candid review. They are not multiphonics. At the end of the C Major Prelude the cello plays double stops and chords. The options are few for us oboe players in how to transfer those ideas to our instrument. We could roll the chords, or ignore them completely. The option I chose is to sing and play simultaneously. It does indeed create an awkward sound, but then so do the double stops and chords on the cello. It is an abrupt break of the musical line as we "crash" into them. We have grown used to chords in string instruments, already for hundreds of years. But we are not used to the idea of singing and playing simultaneously (and I am not the only one to do it). I agree with you that the use of this new technique is controversial and may be seen as off-putting. Still, I stand by my choice to use it and put it out there for it to be debated, as in what we are doing right now, in hopes that others will improve on it and someday we won't have to see it as controversial. On that day it will be normal for the oboe to play with two voices.
Here is another thought: we must look ahead. We must innovate. It is already an "innovation" to bring this repertory to the oboe, ok. But there has to be more. We must think of the future, and how the oboe will develop. Every advancement in oboe playing came with drawbacks. Adding the low-B-flat cause chaos on the scale, and we worked through it for the last 150 years or so. Circular breathing was also faulty (maybe still is...). Flatter-tonguing, double-tonguing (triple....?) all advance our playing tech, but need to be developed further. So is singing-and-playing simultaneously. We must start somewhere, and take courageous steps to make it happen, even if it comes with drawbacks. It will now be out to our next generations to step up to the plate and make improvements. Therefore, let's think forward and in a more lengthy way, and embrace the future.
All this, ladies & gentlemen, without a square centimeter of score in view please. What an incredible piece of Art. Thank you !

Beautiful setting, great camera work, and SPECTACULAR playing. Bravo, Alex! xoxo
And to play the Morehead, a piece of such complex structure,...and multiphonics in Bach! (a revelation!)
My gold standard, as usual. The mix of depth and light in the sound is something to behold. Thank you, Alex.
