Old Kargil town | Market, Streets, Old buildings

Kargil is located close to the border in Ladakh, and flanked by the Himalayas. It was an important southern node in the Central Asian silk route trade until 1947, when borders were drawn between India and Pakistan. The town’s population of around 16,000 (Census 2011) mainly comprises Muslims, along with some Buddhists and a few Sikh families. Kargil Market is situated in the middle of Kargil city. In olden times, the Kargil Market has evolved as a considerable trading center along the important silk trade route where travelers and traders would stop to rest, buy and sell. Even today the kargil markets keep hold of the old world charm and imitate the rich Central-Asian persuade in its architectural character. The part of the kargil market is recognized as Balti Bazar which is the envoy of the inimitable mud and wood architectural style connected with Ladakh, Western Himalayas and Karakoram. The market of kargil Balti bazaar is one of the significant feature of the socio-cultural landscape of the region. Kargil bazaar marks a confluence of Ladakhi, Balti and Central Asian Architecture.

Thanks to technology that one could know and see about the past. My father was born in Kargil and migrated to Pakistan in 1947. I now live in Karachi . Always dreaming to visit my father’s home town but political disputes between the two countries have kept the peoples apart .
