In today's video, you will get to see one of our CHINAMPA gardens in our PERMACULTURE FOOD FOREST being set up for a DEMO THREE SISTERS GARDEN that I am preparing for an EDUCATIONAL PUBLIC TELEVISION station here in Ontario (MiniTFO). Plus, this year I finally decided to set up a couple of CATTLE PANELS (actually they're Hog Panels - they're just as long to make the arch, but not as wide - I wanted to start easy 😊). I wanted to get them in place for Mother's Day, because Magali loves all forms of vertical gardening - trellises, archways, etc.! So they're up now! I wanted to set them up alone so I could show you how you can do it alone if needed. I give an explanation toward the end of the process. Much of the repetitive stuff, I put in sped-up video with music. Also, when tidying up certain areas by hand, I have always found those large garden scissors very tiring, especially if I want to collect what I am cutting at the same time. I also find them quick to dull. So I will show you a tool that I use, and how to use it, to do this by hand which is a lot easier than your regular garden scissors.

Allô Deniz. Merci! Il n'y a pas de l'eau partout. Vous allez pouvoir marcher sur les sentiers de copeaux. Mais, au cas où, les bottes sont utiles. Elles nous protègent aussi des bibittes, et ici et là il y a de l'herbe à puce et des plantes épineuses, alors les bottes protègent de cela aussi!

I enjoyed the chinampas portion of your video. Since we butt up on a 2100 acrole marsh (Big Island Marsh -- part of Quinte Bay) there are a few spots where I can fo this. I even have fallen ash trees out there to make a base.
I will get up there to get those sorghum seeds, too

I also use European buckthorn branches for garden stakes, firewood, and brush piles for wildlife. I just have be careful about the thorns. Thanks for the video and all the best.

Every time I've planted the 3 sisters, rabbits have "murdered" 2 of the sisters and only left the squash alone. I have a lot of rabbits and unless I fence off the garden bed, they nibble off many of the young transplants. I guess water in the Chinampa setting deters rabbits. Happy growing.
The 4 foot fence, buried about a foot deep, is what keeps rabbits out, (but nothing else). The brambles, etc, I talked about in the last video are what keep everything else out, in combo with the fence. Of course, this new chinampa garden doesn’t have any brambles yet. I guess I’ll be doing some propagating in the fall. The abundance of water will make that easy.
For the squash to be an effective deterrent, it really has to surround the other plants thickly. This demo garden is going to be a real test, because there isn’t much protecting it. Just the 4 foot fence. But the squash are going to have a ton of space to grow. We’ll see! 😊
