Non-migratory Canadian Geese are called Golf Course Geese here in NJ....or Winged Squirrels.
The migratory Geese used to fly-south to the Carolinas. Now due to all the grain farming they stop at the Delaware River and the upper Chesapeake.

Down in Louisiana at the end of duck/goose season we have a conservation season where all bets are off on how we can hunt the snows and blues. We can use electronic calls, we can crawl them, the plugs come out of our shotguns, and there's no limit. So it's crazy to hear yalls season starts during the spring because we hammer them down here and then they catch hell all the way back north that really speaks to the size of the population of those birds.

How do you get snows in close? They always fly a mile high here.

I still suggest a semi auto for anyone getting into waterfowl. I've seen more cheap pumps jam up with beginner operators than I've seen for autos, at least when using heavier game loads. Generally speaking even cheaper autos are reliable with heavy loads, it seems like its the light target loads that give cheap autos problems. A 600 dollar weatherby sa-08 shoots 3" magnums all day and will kill any goose that flies, and unless you put in crazy amounts of practice into running a pump fast, an auto will always give you faster follow up shots on birds. So my advice to beginners is get an auto.

I think a single shot could be good for beginners, depending on their shooting background. Better to lay one good shot on target than frantically spraying lead in the sky

I have all pumps. Wish I had an auto or double. But it works for me. And I never get a good third shot anyway.

Only geese I hunt until conservation season starts is speckle bellies and all season long we only use at most a dozen decoys but those decoys actually have feathers on them and if we was walking up the levee we couldn't tell the difference. We'd have a flooded rice field in front for ducks and a dry field in back cor geese. I know for a fact towards the end of the season we had to make a decision if we wanted to hunt ducks or we had to get out of our pit blinds and move out into the fields if we wanted to hunt geese because they'd never come around any of our pit blinds. This is an awesome podcast guys I love deer hunting but duck and goose hunting is way more fun followed by turkey hunting.

Yeah if I shoot the wrong bird by accident I'm not reporting myself to anyone that bird is getting hid on the levee until it's time to leave then it's getting hid in the decoy bag!!!

2 years later and the answer to the state stamp question is that in Texas you need a FREE Texas crane endorsement attached to your license. No federal duck stamp needed.
