You can sometimes find these used but often they may be in need of a good cleaning. I don't know if I would trust an knock-off brand though.
Plastic tapes work well in tension, if you just stick it one by one without any tension, as you demonstrated they won't work well. If you stick one side then stretch over the whole length and stick the other side the plastic tape will hold up just as well (if not better). I'm sure there are some use cases for this but there is a reason most things shipped with plastic tapes, cheap and definitely good enough.
That’s not true, plastic tape is always going to be inferior on cardboard. Even with tension , you could still break the seal on a larger box in the middle quite easily, without breaking the tape, and then reach in there.
