See here a note held can shift and uplift but for another it may take key changes and modulation. It's called playing propheticaly
Religious musicians/singers don't play/sing to entertain. They play to invoke the presence of whatever God or demon (depending on whichever one people believe in) they're trying to get the attention of. Sometimes, this is done by holding a note for a long period of time.
