  • This video is the second in a series of videos for Ceramics I when making their Slab Drape Molded Plates. These plates are an exercise with my Ceramics I kids, where they learn to roll an even slab, learn to drape mold it, learn to carve and clean it, and lastly, we will do glazing using a bulb syringe and brush. The link to the first video in this series can be found here: • How to Drape Mold a Sl...
This video covers how to clean the outer edge with a Mudtools Shredder, a notched rib, and a small stainless steel Mudtools rib. I show compressing the cleaned rim with my wet fingers to smooth it. After the outer rim is cleaned, I show how to lay out your design, and then carve it with a small Kemper Mini Ribbon tool.
The video which shows how to make a notched rib is here: • Creating a Notched Rib...

In this video, I am using standard 153, a nice midrange firing stoneware.
I am a public high school ceramics teacher at William Mason High School in Mason, Ohio. (Mason is currently the largest high school in Ohio!) As a potter, I have been working in clay for over 30 years, and I have been teaching for over 28 years, the past 20 have been specifically teaching high school ceramics. I love what I do! I started my UA-cam channel a few years ago, to make videos to help my students if they are absent and miss a demo, or if they would like to explore more advanced techniques independently. I have been amazed to reach such a wider audience than my own students!

You are an AMAZING teacher! I watched soo many videos on hand building ( as I gave up on wheel throwing) which I like to learn and practice more doing it, you are by the best teacher I learned from, you don’t forget basics for the true beginner.. Thank you soo very much☺️😍

I just cut all my fingernails off because I can not throw with them. They look nice.
Thanks for all your wonderful videos.

Lol! Thanks!!! (I admit it was total vanity- I honestly got tired of seeing my hands look so old (and manly!) in the videos, and decided to grow them out a bit to make them a bit more feminine!) . ;) . I cut them every other time I do my nails... I'll cut them this week when I change my polish! I love the manicures I do myself now- it lasts for 10 days- with throwing! Crazy strong!
