    Had these for just over a year and I can't fault them, the slight heaviness of them is more than made up for by the price and the fact they are as hard as nails. About a month ago I hit crater of a pot hole that had cunningly disguised itself as shallow puddle, almost chinned the stem and sprained both wrists, burped the tire, sealant everywhere, God knows how I managed to stay rubber side down, checked it on the truing stand still running true, no ovaling. I had WTB i29's before these which are basically MTB rims and I had to tweak them into true every other month or so.

    I bought a pair right before my bikepacking trip across France, 900kms on dirt roads, single tracks and some pretty gnarly terrain, and I'm really happy with them.
    They stayed true, and to took some big hits from potholes without flinching, even with the bike fully loaded.
    I must agree with Ross on the weight: mine came out at 1680g on my scale, including tape and valves. I won't lie, I was a bit bummed. But once I rode them, I immediately noticed a big difference with the stock wheels that came on my Kona Rove ST, so I still really happy with my purchase.
    Notice: the tape came badly wrapped from the factory, had bubbles and began to peel at the end, but still so, no issues to fit tubeles tires. And also, I didn't get the spole tool.
    All in all, very good value for the money.

    I'm getting ready to pull the trigger on the Hunt XC Wide's for my hardtail. For those that also like MTB riding, a high engagement hub at this price is terrific. High engagement is a big plus on technical (somewhat rough and twisty) climbs. Hearing that they tend to stay true and are relatively light at just over $400 is amazing. And the flexibility of configuration with the easy to remove endcaps is just another plus.

    I have the 700 version. Have been very rough on them over the 7 months I've had them, by rough I mean catching air and landing crooked and rough terrain. Only very slightly out of true. Very happy with them.

    I ordered a set of 4Season 700c, I haven't even ridden the wheelset yet and I can tell you. HANDS DOWN, THE best buying experience I've ever had to date. If the wheelset is half as good as their CS department I'll be absolutely laughing. I will have absolutely no problem recommending these to anyone based on that fact alone. I'm excited to ride mine, and already thinking of buying another set. It's a truly banger company, banger people, and hopefully a banger product. Super stoked to ride them.

    I ride the dynamo version of that. Over 13,000 kms since last July, primarily road. Went through a set of WTB Byways. I agree with you on almost everything that you have said about those wheels with the exception that I had quite a bit of difficulty installing a new set of tires on. It may be my fault since I am new to tubeless.
    But, really, these wheels are really value for the money and I believe that they're quite well known over in the UK.

    Hey Russ. New to your channel and really like it...so thanks.
    Yes...I have a set of Hunt All Season 700c gravel wheels. I really like them. The EZO bearings were phenomenal right out of the box. This is a testament of not only the bearing and the build quality, but the runout in the bearing seats as well. I decided on them after seeing a UA-cam video of one of my favorite Brits...Josh Ibbett...during his tour divide race in '19 when they all got stuck at Brushy Creek Lodge. I've got about 2000 to 2500 miles on them and haven't had to touch them and I've been on some pretty rough single track. I too, think they are a great bargain. I also like the fact that Hunt will allow LBS's to become dealers...or at least did back when I bought them last year. I've been trying to get the bike shop where I work interested, but no luck yet. They're DT Swiss snobs...

    Love my 700C Hunt gravel wheels, but only 100-200 miles due to lack of racing this year. Like the spare spokes and Really tubeless ready - includes valves and tape. And brake 6 bolt adapter. I also like the rear hub engagement and sound. Very nice. Oh in a wet gravel race i bashed my rear wheel with a rock, np for the wheel. 30 psi for me too, 40 and 45 wtb. These are the lightest aluminum wheels i own, they fall between 2 different types of bontrager aero carbon road wheels with some rim depth, so i am pretty pumped about it. Over 100g lighter than my stock wheels. And yes price is great.

  • @CtFshd1812
    @CtFshd1812 3 роки тому +28

    I can explain the weight issue for you.
    When a rim manufacturer makes an alloy rim, the main bulk of the cost is the mould. As more and more rims are extruded from the said mould, the mould actually wears out and in turn, the rim thickness increases on all fronts. This thickness increase adds weight.
    To keep costs down, the mould is used further into the wear stages. As said earlier, the mould is the most expensive part of the alloy rim's cost and the longer they use it before replacement, the cheaper the rims are to make.
    Because of this, you either have to pay extra for a more consistent rim(weight wise) or make do with a larger variance in weight. With carbon the moulds do not wear out as much but the process and material costs are much higher than that of alloy so they can afford to replace the moulds more often.
    Hint: this is part of the reason why some carbon rims can be so cheap

    • @cmddelete2169
      @cmddelete2169 3 роки тому +7

      Alloy rims aren't moulded, they're extruded. The extrusion tooling is made of steel, much much harder than the aluminium alloy the rims are made of....

    I've had these same wheelset for over a year on 4 bikes. One thing for sure is that the hubs are loud when spinning freely. Currently I have Donnelly 50c stradas mounted and these wheels have a nice supple ride at around mid 20s psi on hard packed gravel. No issues or truing needed so far. These wheels now live on my crust Evasion lite and I will be fitting either teravail rutland 2.1" or the vittoria mezcal 2.25" this winter.

      Open up the freehub and put a thin layer of light grease on the mechanism surfaces. I used Shimano fluorescent green grease. It made it noticeably quieter without affecting the function.

    I have the 700c version. 2 years and several thousand miles on them and they’ve never missed a beat. Still true, hubs have never needed seeing to, lighter than most wheels for the price (and more) and they run super smooth. I don’t see any point going anywhere else for a set of wheels. Just saving up for a pair of Hunt’s Superdura dynamo wheels now.

    After you did the live stream with hunt wheels I ended up purchasing a set of the hunt 650b adventure carbon wheels. For $795 delivered I have been very impressed with this carbon wheel set. Very good value for the money. It was a huge improvement over the stock at WTB wheels that came with my Salsa. I am not a super heavy user, so I cannot really comment on the long term durability yet. However I have confidence that I will get good service out of this wheel set. It looks like they no longer list this product on their website, so I guess I jumped the bandwagon at the right time. Delivery service with DHL was phenomenal. They sent me the email that they shipped, and they were in Arkansas about a day and a half later. Very impressive for shipping from England.

    I looked hard at them before building up some stans wheels with white industries hubs. I questioned what do the 6 bolt rotor adapters weigh as I felt they did not include those in stated weight of wheel set. My other concern was freewheel noise level and lastly how fast/smooth the hub bearings might be. In the end I paid twice as much but my LBS has always been there for me including when I had hub failure out of warranty on one of my OEM rims and I trusted he would build them right for me. Good value from Hunt though for what you get. Thank you for the review!

    • @HOllyBOni
      @HOllyBOni 3 роки тому

      The bearings come from EZO Japan. There are very very few (if any) hub manufacturers that make their own bearings.
      Hunt wheels have a very good warranty behind them, 60 day ride and return, free warranty returns.
      That said, there is nothing wrong with supporting your LBS and I bet your custom wheels are sweet.
      Personally I wouldn't trust any of the shops near me to touch my bike. 😁

    These wheels were a worthy upgrade to my Sora $1100 Journeyman which came with very heavy wheels. But I didn't want to put $1k wheels on a $1k bike.

    It's an urban myth that you can discern stiffness or suppleness in a wheel in the radial direction. Tires deflect far more than a wheel, so the wheel is effectively totally stiff in the radial direction.

  • @stroudnick
    @stroudnick 3 роки тому +1

    Well I think that Hunt makes a good product and well priced, I've considered a set for the road bike. Just have to say that I wouldn't expect these wheels to last forever. If you live in somewhere like the PNW except the aluminum nipples will need replacing in the first ~2 years, due to corrosion. Also personally have had mixed results with similar hubs, but would imagine rims will need to be replaced before, within 2-4 years depending on your riding style (on- vs off- road). Right now you can find a comparable wheelset with DT 350s for about that price. IMO a good name brand rear hub is not only expectantly durable, but is more resilient to hub/freebody standard changes ... Like always, thanks for the video Russ!

      @@josephfarrugia2350 Depending what your looking for specifically, inventory is really low. I currently see a few decent sets on ebay and pinkbike for ~500 (sorry can't do links here). I've picked up used sets for ~250 pre covid, but don't think thats possible atm. The hubs are worth the extra money, rims are more of a wear item. Just for reference, pre-covid I was able to build my own wheels with used 350 hubs for ~200, carbon hoops for ~350 and spokes/nipples for ~40.

    • @ernie12man
      @ernie12man 2 роки тому +2

      They're built with brass nipples and spec'd like their all-season rim and disc models basically. I've been riding a set of each in recent years as winter shit-weather wheels in the worst hardcore weather to be found in, yep the PNW Col. R. Gorge mountains, rain, snow, etc. And based on the Hunt branded hub performance after hammering those two sets for several years which have needed basically no service except some freehub pawl grease to quiet the ratcheting down, I'm springing for this set too to run 48s as an option with a couple other sets of wheels i use between two all-road bikes. Hard to beat this bang for the buck, with brass nipples no less :) .

    • @stroudnick
      @stroudnick 2 роки тому +1

      @@ernie12man Good to hear they work well for you and hope they continue to! Totally understand that a decent carbon rim with brass spokes can last many seasons without fault, even after a true or two. Hubs, are more regularly where i've seen/experience problems. For hubs such as the ones supplied by Hunt; i've generally see issues after 3+ road seasons, cx/mtb i've seen hubs last maybe 1 season (it's more or less luck of the draw/Taiwanese manufacturer IMO).
      With my longest use bike, I'm on ~6 years with my current the DT 350s (daily commuter). 5mi (avg) a day, partially loaded, with maybe 2 services a year and still no issue. On other wheels I have only had one bad bearing on a front 350 and have had axle issues (complicated), this is why I have own 8 complete sets (240/350).
