That's why you see so many movies where the bf or the gf gets invited to Thanksgiving or Christmas to meet the rest of the family. As an American, meeting my partner's family is important to me before a marriage. I think saying "it doesn't matter, or it's only a thing in Asian countries" is an out-of-touch thing to say. BUT if you're family is not involved with your life already, it makes sense to not meet them, but let's not make a blanket statement for all Americans please LOL
