I saw they were touring with Otoboke Beaver a few years ago. When I ordered a few things from Yoshie this year, she saw I was in Korea and she gifted me a couple single downloads of theirs. Needless to say, I just bought tickets to their show in Hongdae in a few weeks. Been trying to see them since summer. I. Cannot. Wait.
Everything doesn't have to happen in LA or NYC, everything doesn't have to happen in Soul. So much has come from Seattle , Oakland, Minneapolis, and now Daegu.
A side of the South Korean music scene not widely known about. Everyone knows about K Pop and boy groups, but not this. Kudos to KEXP for providing much deserved exposure!
@@abmadul part of the problem is i imagine many korean punks bands dont release their stuff to be searchable for in english. The only reason i found Drinking boys and girls choir is through their label
I remember playing in a band in Pusan Korea back in 1989 and going up to play in Tague and it would have been hard to imagine this band coming from there then. We would have loved to play with them!
I was in a band in Daegu from 2014-2017. We played a number of shows with them, including our first. They were some of our closest friends in the music scene.
21:43 Wow!!! She is mentioning about Band A-frica from Daegu, I'm so fan of them, thank you!! And I'm so happy for you guys, hope to see you in a concert!!
Love you all so much - you always brighten my day! Meena looks so happy to be playing, MJ is an absolute BEAST behind the kit, and Junghoon is a great addition to the band! Can't wait to see what you have in store for 2022.
It's great that Drinking Boys and Girls Choir are finally getting wider exposure. Both of their albums (Keep Drinking! and Marriage License) are awesome and they go hard live.
I love that driving fast beat. Love the punk rocker-esq sound. Never heard of them before but Hope to hear more from them! Kexp👍❣️ Their sound just brings me back to a mixture of 80s90s and earlier punk. Any one else? Cheers🍻drinking boys&girls choir
I want to know what the scene for rock and punk is like in Korea. Is the societal pressure a large factor in their music? I know it's a pressure cooker and letting it all out is probably a desire for a lot of people.
I lived out there for a about 5 years and was deep in their punk/indie scene for most of that time. I played in a band and organized DIY shows in Daegu, DBGC's hometown. They were some of my best friends in the scene. It's a small, ever fluid thing and mostly only happens on weekends. But those involved are dedicated. Social pressure definitely plays a role. Most of the people in the scene are actually in their 20s and 30s. Though there is the occasional "youth band". A lot of bands have short shelf-lives due to the mandatory Army conscriptions. DBGC is an outlier in that they’ve been together since 2013. But new bands always form. A club will close and another will open to pick up the torch.
@@JWPanimation My current thoughts on what is going on in the world... people should tune out... unplug... and just try and hear themselves outside of all this noise.... people walk around day in and day out with some music plugged into their head...
@@JWPanimation the issue might be considered brainwashing... most of this shit I do not want around me... nor do I like to hear it blaring out of cars...
