  • UPDATE: Please see the VIDEOJMENO comments with reference to when to tighten the air bleed screw ✅
    Relatively quick way to replace the front fork seals on the GS.
    04:30 Which way up?
    11:33 Mechanically locking top nuts
    The bike has done 35k miles
    Sorry - I lost the footage of sucking out the old oil and replacing it with new. About 485ml of 10W oil are needed but, more importantly, the level must end up 135mm from the top of the lower leg.

    The small screw must be tightened exactly in position at the level of fitting into the upper handle. Tightening as shown in the video is incorrect and there is permanent overpressure in the fork

      Thanks for this. I’m sure you’re right. Where I closed the screw was only a few centimetres from the correct height but I’ll release & retighten the screw to get the trapped volume of air correct. Thanks again 👍 (While I’m at it, I’ll do the same on the other fork leg too. To make sure they’re balanced.)

      @@Greeves Not at all, thank YOU for making this video. It's the only one I've seen that does it from this end and I'm going to try it on my R1200RT LC today. Bahnstormer wanted about £150 labour plus £78 for the seal kit. Was going to cough up but then they cancelled because they are suddenly out of business, so I thought I'd do it myself. Got the seals for a tenner and an extractor tool for the same (not the same as yours, it's the lever type). MASSIVE saving.

      @@ArcanePath360 All the best with it. By the way, another commenter pointed out that I re-fitted the air bleed screw too early in the video. Quite right too. Best to fit the screw after the fork leg is fully in place; so that the air pressure in both legs ends up the same. (I loosened & retightened both air screws a few days later to balence the forks.)

      @@Greeves Thanks. I did notice that comment and made a note. I had negative pressure pulling my leg down before I bled it. Not sure if that's normal. I just checked the manual on re-assembling fork legs and it does say to bleed them after putting back together.
      Getting that dust boot off the lower leg was a REAL pain even without the tube there. Had to work a short stubby flat head into it with a bit of force. I'm hoping the extractor tool I bought (should come this morning in the post) will fit in there. Starting to think I should have bought one like yours.

    Hi, very helpful video. Please could you tell me what size KNIPEX Pliers did you use. Were they the KNIPEX 86 01 250mm or KNIPEX 86 01 300mm ones. Thanks in advance. Regards, Jon

      Really pleased if the video helps. I used two sizes of Knipex Plier Wrenches - the 150 & 250. The 250 on the fork leg. These tools seem to have got much more expensive recently but I still love them & use the 150 size, in particular, all the time 👍

      @@jonconradtv by the way, I keep a dedicated 150 plier wrench + a set of torx keys with my bike all the time. Useful when a mirror gets knocked & needs to be tightened , for example. All the best 🙂

    Can we remove the seal without seal extractor?

    • @Greeves
      @Greeves  9 днів тому +1

      @@idrishassane629 I’m sure you could get the seal out without a proper puller. A hook of some kind may work, for example. It would take a while though & you’d have to be really careful not to damage the fork tube.

      @@idrishassane629 I’m just an amateur owner, so not an expert by any means. Having said that, I doubt you’ll notice much difference using that oil. I’d give it go if it’s all that’s available. Best that you check with a BMW dealer though, or contact BMW directly, online via their website perhaps
