Definetley not mutual respect. Dexter even talks about it when they first start talking with Doakes in the cage, calling him out saying "I know what you're doing." Referring to his army Ranger training, in which Doakes definetley would have gone through SERE, maybe some other trainjng, and utilized that training to try to empathize with Dexter. In hopes of course to exploit a hole in Dexter's morals and emotions. The best way to do that would be to play devils advocate, sympathize, brush up his character by telling him he's better than this, that he knows deep down he doesn't want to keep doing what he's doing, and that he knows the right thing to do would be to turn himself in and to let him go. Dexter isn't fazed by this stuff to the point of turning himself in, because he knows what hes doing, UNTIL Doakes brings up his father, and he learns that his father really died because of him which shakes his code and the principals he lives his life off of. It takes Doakes a minute but you can see he starts to realize that it's a weakness to exploit and he utilizes it to coax Dexter to his side. Dexter probably knew that the entire time, but I think he really was just using Doakes as a conduit to express his thoughts, more than really sympathizing with him and them getting buddy buddy. In essence they're both appealing to eachother for a sense of self subservience, Doakes for his survival, and Dexter scrambling to find his sense of self.
The part where Doakes said “ Dexter” , instead of Morgan, and he returned it by saying James, it felt emotional, it felt like they had mutual respect towards each other despite everything.
I think the writers were actually trying to show that deep down, both Dexter and doakes want each other. The best scene in the whole series ❤ I really wish they'd saved the S2 plotline for the final season... It would've been perfect if it just changed slightly that he turns himself in with Doakes
iirc the showrunner said that at the time he did not know if there would be a season 3, and he believed in the "tell the best story you can" approach, so he went with this. If Showtime had guaranteed him more seasons perhaps he would've saved this storyline for later.
Imagine instead of Doakes getting killed he would become Dexter's ally and they would catch guys together on the low-low. Doakes' character was too good too be killed
I feel like they really should have had Dex and Doakes have a deeper conversation. There's a lot of questions Doakes always had, and plenty Dexter had for Doakes. They could have gotten to know each other a lot more. I have to imagine Doakes would be more sympathetic to Dexter after learning his past.
The scene shortly after this where Dexter kills a victim with Doakes right there is the best scene in the whole series. Doakes realises at that point just how scary and cold blooded a killer Dexter is. In this scene he thinks he's manipulating Dexter into freeing him out of a mutual respect he's building in Dexter's mind. When Dexter kills a defenceless man behind a thin sheet of plastic, he realises his efforts are futile and he's entirely at the mercy of someone who kills without regret.
A lot of people say that Doakes needed to be around longer, and I disagree. He was from the start an ever increasing reminder that Dexter is not as slippery to everyone, as seems. It makes you realise that there are people out there who think independently and are basically kryptonite to Dexter's hiding in plain sight methods. The most notable time this happens next is Trinity, because just like with Doakes, he let his guard down. Think about it, yes being a involved with the police gives him a good cover. It makes it easier for him to access evidence, criminal history information for his code, and etc.. But it paints a giant target on him for anyone who is looking. That's actually what makes this whole series fun to watch. If he were just a serial killer, no one would really tune in as much, and the stakes would be hard to rip up and move on. for many reasons; As a operator for the police; 1. If he just disappeared, people would investigate. (eg. his orders of the knockout drug were as easy find if someone looked, ie. Masuka) 2. If he stops killing due to heat, that just increases the heat. 3. If he gets involved, people start asking why. 4. If he moves and killings like his happen elsewhere, it's quite the clue. From the beginning he's forced into a scenario which forces him to not only kill, but to keep going, the deeper he gets the deeper he falls, as with the risk of getting caught, the anty rises for him to break his code, leave clues impossible to fully cover, etc.. If he were just a roaming serial killer, getting away with things would be far easier, with his meticulous code. Just makes it harder for him to verify all the things he needs to verify. Basically Harry made sure he would be controlled, never fully free to enact his dark passenger. New Blood was an interesting way to sequel his story. And Resurrection I assume will have to take either a very similar direction, or a completely different one.
Doakes was a formidable character but his humanity real shines through here and I don't think he was saying it so he could get off lighter. It was the first time Dexter had stopped lying about who he was and I think doakes really respected that, even calling him by his first name, it pulls on the heart strings a bit!
Spoiler alert! Dexter turned himself in. He got multiple lifetimes in prison. Doakes was promoted. He took over from the retired Lundy. You can watch the spin-off show about him and his team hunting down serial killas called Surprise Mazafaka! Great show! Debra quit. Opened a bar together with Angel. The end.
So it would have been nice if Dexter was ready to turn himself in here and let Doakes free to arrest him as a means to an end, and they finally had a mutual respect for each other's codes, but then everything proceeded to go to shit because of Dexter's psycho ex. Dexter tries to save Doakes but it's too late and he dies anyways, and Dexter seeks out revenge for his rival friend's death. I think that would have made Doakes' farewell better here for me and better closure.
I wish, before Doakes died, Dexter got him to confess about his own 'dark passenger'. We know Doakes has taken vengeance on people he thought deserved to die, I just wanted Dexter to get Doakes to admit that they're not all that different, that Doakes also feels a perverse sense of justice when he kills someone who fits his own code. And on that account I have to wonder why Dexter didn't become a cop himself, he has the skills and it would allow him to kill without having to hide bodies in garbage bags.
Doakes is very justice oriented as a reaction to the horrors he witnessed at war. And if ALL Dexter ever was was a vigilante, he might have been more willing to overlook it. But the ritualistic way Dexter does what he does... I mean, it's haunting just to see it from outside the screen, but irl it would be terrifying.
Doakes was traumatized when Dexter started cutting up the body So, nah, Doakes isn't on that level. Eliminating bad guys, wam, bam, done. No problem *Dexter* - let me take a moment... 💀 Doakes took no pleasure in the killing. Dexter revelied in it, releasing all his stresses and burdens
@@shawnbradford2243 Not really. He didn't seek them out and did what Dexter does. Even his friend on the boat he tries to talk him down and turn himself in after killing his wife. Doakes had no choice but to defend himself in that scenario. The other guy committed war crimes that Doakes explained to Maria during his time in the military. Dexter does this because he needs too.
For as much as i love this scene, idk i cant see it happen, doaks had said earlier, Kill me or set me free, the only two options, why would he have gone back to the cell. personally it would have seen more in character to try to fight dexter off atleast before going in or soemthing idk, but just goin back in no questions asked seemed a bit weird for me
They were both killers, but in different ways. Doakes hated when killers got off just as much as Dexter. It only made sense to have them pair up and Doakes keeps clear of Dexter and every so often gives him "cases" to work on. Doakes was such a good character and shouldn't have been killed off.
They could've sent Dexter to prison instead of Canada. Just think of all the possible murderous things he could have done in just 1 season in prison...
This show was so fun. Portrays society perfectly. People would rather like/listen to a charming guy rather than an arrogant ass even if he is doing the right thing.😂
Season 1, Season 4, Season 2, Season 3. That’s my current ranking anyways. People talk about Season 4, but there’s just something special about the first one. They’re all pretty close, S3 being a bit less but not absurdly so.
Doakes differs from Dexter only in that he is a hypocrite and an unbalanced jerk He also killed a man under a bridge and hid this fact from the police The greatest moralists are always guilty of what they accuse others of
Maybe that was also a question for moral grayness for viewers to think. Doakes is a police officer and seems on the side of law that is supposed to protect the people. He does awesome job BUT he is also a bit vigilante that shoots and kills people on the side and lies about it and the department covers up. So he is using his knowledge about certain people (bad people with warcrimes in the past according to him) to justify killing. As viewers we see how he is using his moral code as a higher code than law. But since the killings are just shootings, we dont see them as a gore-loving monster and a lot of people close to him kinda understands him and give him a pass. On the other hand Dexter kills until he is 100% certain that the victim IS guilty. But the way he process is cold blooded, calculated, ritualistic and very gorey. But that is also for a reason. If Dexter could get away leaving the corpse behind and there is a whole department covering for him, he wouldnt need to chop up human body parts and all those disgusting things to get rid of the body. Imagine if Doakes f'ed up a kill and if he cannot get rid of the body he would lose his job and go to prison. I think he is totally capable of what Dexter would do to see another day outside prison. But the way Dexter is stigmatized is way worse due to the inhumane part that the violence is more vivid. I think its a good depiction of the classic trolley problem. Most people initially agree to turn the key to save 5 people sacrificing one. But when the same question is formed in the way of pushing one person to stuck the train to save 5 people the number of people say "they would" drops drastically since they are more involved and it feels more like a murder than simple trolley change. That's why i also thought, out of all the people, Doakes would be the one most understanding him. His past in special ops made him see how bad the world is and his protective side is actually more to vigilante than following the law blindlessly. They could be a super duo like Season 3 theme. But ofc that's from the outside look. Dexter's reason to kill isnt to save an innocent life, so that's the monster part in him. Doakes slowly learning that process that his motivation isnt to save life but to enjoy murder would make hell of a story to watch.
I really wish dextar would have somehow convinced doakes not to snitch maybe via leverage. Similar to the relationship him and debra eventually had. Imagine both of them knowing in the later seasons. The comedy would have layered on 😂😊
Then you would lose all that aggression from Doakes against Dexter. When Deb accepted Dexter for who he was, it was just another normal interaction again
I always liked how Doakes desperately tries to convince dexter by agreeing with his line of thinking, then you see Dexter smirk because he knows Doakes has no other plays and he is doing what they all do; try to reason with him. Doakes' attempt to get dexter to release him was so pathetic lol
Man this was such a good moral dilemma for Dexter, ruined by that crazy eyed lady coming by and killing Doakes, solving the problem without it requiring Dexter break his moral code.

I rationalize it by how many people dexter has struggled with hand to hand to the death. Doakes has too but dexter has done it dozens and dozens of times for years. Doakes also underestimated him physically. Idk. It's still a reach but dexter was more desperate in the moment.
@@rcb20091 fr people forget dexter has encountered many fights and struggles so knows how to act in a real situation. obviously doakes has military training but people shouldn't forget that dexter trained his whole life to be a killer of killers.
Damn. To think Dexter and Doakes could've been good friends
EDITED : Damn. I've never gotten this many likes.
I doubt they could've ever been friends. But they could come to a mutual understanding, but Doakes would still turn Dexter in.
I still to this day can’t decide how much of Doakes lowering his guard was just adjusting his strategy to play Dex. Like it’s pretty clear he is fully bullshitting when he apologizes about the “trophies” and tries to talk Dexter into turning himself in, but he says it with the same sincerity he’s been saying everything else
We don’t have his inner-monologue so we just have no idea how much of a true psycho he actually is, what’s a mask and what’s not, and in what ways he truly does understand and relate to Dexter
All I know is the second Dexter was in handcuffs dude was gonna be smiling like a mf and talking more shit than ever before
@@TimmyMcGowan Doakes was confident enough that something was off with Dexter that he was stalking him starting in Season 2.
I can't remember if he continued to talk shit in Season 2 the same way he did in Seadon 1.
But if he did, then it was a charade how he connected to Dexter in the cage.
@@TimmyMcGowan He could have or even would have given Dexter his trophies back if he really wanted to show trust. The fact that he tried to keep them in his back pocket reveals his intentions.
I think we all wish that doakes was changing his mind. Because this is the first real moral dilemma we face in the show (if I remember correctly).

If Dokes were smarter he could have tried to empathize. Told Dexter that if he gets caught, there is no help, but if he turns himself in, he could plead insanity, maybe get a stay in a psychiatric institute between his trauma and Harry’s raising. It would be BS, but it could dangle the possibility of a fresh start to Dexter.
They already went through all that. This was the beginning of the end. Dexter was preparing to turn himself over. He was getting his personal life in order to protect Rita and Deb from the fallout.
Dexter would not fall for that, he has been on court, knows that It wouldn't work
You don't think Dexter knows what premeditated murder is?
I'm watching Dexter for the first time. I'm on season 7 now. I miss Doakes. I knew he could never live once he found out but damn Doakes was an awesome character

Doakes was my favorite character. I always liked their dynamic and wished they'd dragged it out longer.
1. Why kill Rita, 1st big mistake
2. Doakes died 2 early
3. WHY WRITE THAT FOR DEBBIE, who was that for?
Oh look it's my 3 biggest issues with the show!
The writers wrote themselves in a box. Yeah this was all great but they clearly didn't know what to do after Dexter caught doakes. Could've wrapped up the show but nah they had to stretch it beyond it's expiration date
Why would Doakes even try to convince Dexter to let him go and take Dexter to jail, lol. Even if Dexter avoided the death penalty, there's no way he would see the outside of prison again. That's not exactly how you convince someone.
Then it proves that Doakes didn't think Dexter was a psychopath
@@ZeonEons I'm not sure if I understand what you mean. You mean that Doakes was relying on Dexter having a conscience? Either way, telling Dexter to set him free so that he can take him to jail seems pretty dumb.
@@twistedpersonality If you are just using this clip as the only context, then yes, however, Dexter was already going to turn himself in. This is just a very small clip of the bigger picture unfolding
Definitely would have been better for Deb and Rita if he had turned himself in
The best scene in the whole series ❤ I really wish they'd saved the S2 plotline for the final season...
Doakes ended up being right, everybody Dexter cared for gets hurt in the end
"Surprise, Mother Brother!"
Michael C Hall 🔥🔥🔥
I love how they showed has good in their respectives works , killer and killer chaser
Imagine instead of Doakes getting killed he would become Dexter's ally and they would catch guys together on the low-low. Doakes' character was too good too be killed
isnt that sort of the MIguel storyline though?
@@dondahighhh12doakes would be chill
"Surprise Mother Fkr!" 😂
They should never have killed Doakes.
2:35 It for sure would have been, Dexter destroyed her life
This feels like a more realistic Death Note
2:13 how I feel
I’m sorry….have you killed someone? Lol
@@nicholasmay7911severe constipation
That's actually what makes this whole series fun to watch. If he were just a serial killer, no one would really tune in as much, and the stakes would be hard to rip up and move on. for many reasons;
As a operator for the police;
1. If he just disappeared, people would investigate. (eg. his orders of the knockout drug were as easy find if someone looked, ie. Masuka)
'cmon Letss go' from Doakes is so funny to me for some reason - its non chalant in such a precarious situation
One of the greatest series ever.
💯💯💯💯
The end.
The way he says "coke on da boat" tho
2:36 just started Season 8, think it’s safe to say Dex was right
Don’t forget to watch the new dexter new blood
So it would have been nice if Dexter was ready to turn himself in here and let Doakes free to arrest him as a means to an end, and they finally had a mutual respect for each other's codes, but then everything proceeded to go to shit because of Dexter's psycho ex. Dexter tries to save Doakes but it's too late and he dies anyways, and Dexter seeks out revenge for his rival friend's death. I think that would have made Doakes' farewell better here for me and better closure.
What a scene!
Better than your show
You're the Bay Harbor Butcher.
Doakes manipulated Dexter so well into believing the innocent Dexter was a murderer
I believe this is also the first time you see Dex with a gun in his hands
Doakes should have liked what dexter was, eliminated bad guys
Doakes is very justice oriented as a reaction to the horrors he witnessed at war.
And if ALL Dexter ever was was a vigilante, he might have been more willing to overlook it. But the ritualistic way Dexter does what he does... I mean, it's haunting just to see it from outside the screen, but irl it would be terrifying.
Doakes was traumatized when Dexter started cutting up the body
So, nah, Doakes isn't on that level.
Eliminating bad guys, wam, bam, done. No problem
*Dexter* - let me take a moment... 💀
Doakes took no pleasure in the killing. Dexter revelied in it, releasing all his stresses and burdens
@@ZeonEons so Doaks preferred shooting them…..
@@ZeonEons no he put it where he could kill them and get away with it as a cop.
This should've been like...second to last season.
For as much as i love this scene, idk i cant see it happen, doaks had said earlier, Kill me or set me free, the only two options, why would he have gone back to the cell. personally it would have seen more in character to try to fight dexter off atleast before going in or soemthing idk, but just goin back in no questions asked seemed a bit weird for me
The sad part is we rooted for dexter but doages was amazing at his job he didn't deserve the memes 😂
Best part of the show is these 2
Oh my god, Doakes was the Origami Killer the whole time!!!
what song is that? sounds like its from Silent Hill?
Honestly, I just can't believe that Doakes was Bay Harbor Butcher all along. Something just doesn't add up, we might be missing something.
They were both killers, but in different ways. Doakes hated when killers got off just as much as Dexter. It only made sense to have them pair up and Doakes keeps clear of Dexter and every so often gives him "cases" to work on. Doakes was such a good character and shouldn't have been killed off.
I'll never forgive the fact they killed off Doakes. He didn't deserve to go out that way. May he rest in peace.
I need him to say I AM A SURGEON.
It is silly that Doakes talks and acts like he is still in charge. It's Ridiculous!!!
I'm glad the entrie viewership base is in agreement that killing off Doakes this quick was a bad call on the writer's part
If only they'd saved the S2 plot a bit longer, it would've been a very satisfying ending just with Doakes bringing Dexter in to confess.
Would love to know the soundtrack that plays when dexter says, " I've enjoyed our conversations james."
"I lie to everyone I know."
They could've sent Dexter to prison instead of Canada. Just think of all the possible murderous things he could have done in just 1 season in prison...

Man I wish Doakes had been around longer.
I need to rewatch this
Season 1, Season 4, Season 2, Season 3.
That’s my current ranking anyways. People talk about Season 4, but there’s just something special about the first one. They’re all pretty close, S3 being a bit less but not absurdly so.
Still asking for a Dexter and Brian compilation.
Doakes differs from Dexter only in that he is a hypocrite and an unbalanced jerk
He also killed a man under a bridge and hid this fact from the police
The greatest moralists are always guilty of what they accuse others of
Maybe that was also a question for moral grayness for viewers to think.
Doakes slowly learning that process that his motivation isnt to save life but to enjoy murder would make hell of a story to watch.
doakes ❤❤❤❤

I really wish dextar would have somehow convinced doakes not to snitch maybe via leverage. Similar to the relationship him and debra eventually had. Imagine both of them knowing in the later seasons. The comedy would have layered on 😂😊
Then you would lose all that aggression from Doakes against Dexter. When Deb accepted Dexter for who he was, it was just another normal interaction again
What's the music playing when Doakes calls Dexter by his first name?
I always liked how Doakes desperately tries to convince dexter by agreeing with his line of thinking, then you see Dexter smirk because he knows Doakes has no other plays and he is doing what they all do; try to reason with him. Doakes' attempt to get dexter to release him was so pathetic lol
Man this was such a good moral dilemma for Dexter, ruined by that crazy eyed lady coming by and killing Doakes, solving the problem without it requiring Dexter break his moral code.
