The traditional function of racism in America since before the Revolution has been to allow wealthy people to manipulate white people into voting against their own economic self-interest. Right now, you're getting a masterclass in how they do that.
Billionaires have a major tax cut that expires in 2025, so they were desperate to elect the party most likely to renew that tax cut. They used racism to get what they wanted.

Yes, yes, yes! A very rough ride for H1-B and tariffs. I can tell you that out here in our "petite ville" of northern Maine, close to the "frontiere" of Quebec, we have many prognosticators and 17th century French mystics who're saying the same thing. So, here goes a report from the hinterlands:
Well, someone has to click the buttons to make sure all our bounty makes it to our local big boxes. So, no progressive reform because any attempt at reform has been as sloppy as a DQ Snowcone slowly melting away in the southern Georgia heat.
There have been so many proclamations by Trump over the past few weeks that even somone indifferent as myself has to put down the adderall dispenser, 12 pack of discount Bacardi winecoolers, and hot chicken fat herbal infused elixir for my sciatica flare ups and turn on the old black and white Sony with rabbit ears to tune in to the Trumpian style political hoedown.
I had a very vivid dream last night where I was dressed in a one piece tight spandex leotard with an oversized nightshirt with the heads of Sam Walton and Ronald Reagan emblazoned on the front. I was in Panama standing near the Panama Canal on what was a seemingly beautiful tropical day, when suddenly, I heard the sound of metal on metal and gears grinding to a halt. I looked up to see one of our big ships struggling to make it through that old shipping lane. Big style crates were falling from the deck of the ship into the water and many locals were diving in to rescue our Chinese goodies from water damage. The ship started to spit out an orange colored oil slick. Eventually, the entire crew jumped ship, cocktail waitresses and all, except for our 3 Magi-America's Patriarch, Lord Elon and Dr. Oz. My heart stopped at the sight of the three screaming, "Save our ship, save our ship!" Luckily, my sciatica flare ups weren't so severe due to being in a tropical locale, and so, I quickly pulled out my limited edition mini-Tesla rocket from my knock-off Bournbrook rucksack, lit the fuse with the burning end of my Winchester cigarette and up, up and away I went! Yes, I was a hero as I rescued our 3 Magi from that sinking ship. On the way down, I gently hummed Brahm's "Lullaby" into their sweet little ear drums.

I agree. To make matters worse those contractors that built the casinos either didn't get paid or took cents on the dollar. Some of them ended up going bankrupt. One particular contractor was so distraught from it that not only did he lose a business he built from the ground up over a 30 year period but he couldn't pay his employees before he went under. He ended up committing suicide as a result. I watched an interview with the man's daughter way back in the late 90's or early 2000's on one of those documentary shows like 60 minutes where it was talking about how massive Trump's bankruptcies were and how many people it affected. They interviewed some of the bankers that Trump bankrupted against their bank and they said that Trump owed over $900 million to several banks. He offered back cents on the dollar to them to get them to not prosecute him. That's why Trump has to borrow the bulk of his loans either from a rich friend vouching for the loan or more likely borrowing from a foreign bank like Deutsche Bank who's rumored to be controlled by Putin and other Russian Oligarchs as a way to launder money.

Ask American farmers how well tarrifs worked out for them when Trump placed them on China during his last term? China in retaliation stopped buying soybeans, corn, and dairy products that they were buying from American farmers and started buying them from other countries instead. As a result these farmers started going into bankruptcy. Trump had to turn around and give these farmers low interest loans as well as buy the produce and dairy that the Chinese would have normally bought with our tax dollars to keep the farmers afloat. Trump ended up sent his people to China to renegotiate China purchasing American produce again. China ended up getting a better deal than what they had before. So much for Trump being a master negotiator. 😂😅

On the way down, I gently sang Brahm's "Lullaby" into their sweet little ear drums.

China Belt and Road Initiative aims to move other countries up the value added chain. It starts with assembly in other countries. Then China sells them industrial products to create things to assemble. It also provides infrastructure in other countries in the supply chain to move the assembled or industrial produced things in other countries with Chinese products. Other countries economy improves. So does China. Win/Win! All that is left for the USA is to make loop hole money on finance, insurance and real estate moving the wealth up to the wealthy. China found the loop hole to the USA with a clever plan and benefits. Maybe call it a Statue of Liberty Play. China is creating a Co-Prosperity Network World. USA is an oligarchy for the prosperous. Tariffs do not guarantee low prices or high quality for consumers. They have done the opposite in the past, mostly because they practically eliminate foreign competition.
It would make sense if you could somehow guarantee domestic competition, say, by enforcing anti-trust laws and breaking up the monopolies that exist in the US, but that is not what Trump or any other member of congress is proposing.
As far as China relocating their manufacturing to other countries, it is typically American to assume that the only reason they would do so is because of US trade policy. In fact, that trend was already happening before Trump took office. It is the result of China's ongoing increase in standard of living, as Chinese factory workers have been demanding more as their skill increases and they seek better opportunities and more consumer goods.
To that extent, Chinese companies were looking to countries like Malaysia and India for cheaper labor. They are simply at a stage of development where it is more profitable for Chinese companies to outsource.
The US bicycle manufacturer cannot compete because he still wants to exploit cheap foreign labor for the parts that are used to assemble the finished product in the US, but now has to pay an additional 25% for each of the assembled parts. If he made a product sourced entirely from US raw materials with US labor, the tariff would not be a problem for him. However, he would have higher labor costs and may have to share his profit with workers.

Mussolini and Hitler preferred autarky to free trade, that is self reliance on domestic production as .opposed to imported goods/ which in the 1930s had some successes, as Germany and Italy performed relatively economically well, as they became isolated from the vagaries of international markets.
I'm pretty sure the fascist economic playbook is what Trump is turning to when he espouses the benefits of tariffs.
However, this is not the 1930s, the world economy is far more interconnected today and mutually reliant.
I mean if self reliance is so great, why are economic sanctions so damaging? Why are the Russian and Iranian economies doing so badly since they were cut out of global trade?
Russia and Iran are two large countries with vast resources at hand, yet they are struggling with low growth and high inflation since becoming isolated. Trump's trade policies would amount to self-inflicted sanctions.
Truth is, globalization has gone too far to be rolled back. Most corporations are reliant on global markets both in terms of supply and demand. I mean you don't become a billionaire by just utilizing one market, no matter how large it is.
Tesla for instance, doesn't only rely on Indian labour stateside, it sources its lithium from Chile, Australia, China, and Argentina - so called 'white gold' used in the batteries that power electric car engines. Needless to say, North America is not rich in lithium.
Tesla also owns a factory in Shanghai that builds half of its components. So you can see why Musk was desperate to inveigle himself into Trump's court.
Trump is deluded if he thinks he can roll back the global economy. But in reality he knows he can't, he's bluffing.
Tariffs are just a patriotic guise, a way of fooling .American workers he really cares about them, to win votes from the rust belt. He also likes world leaders rushing to meet him as to avoid a trade war. He likes that kind of thing, it feeds his ego. He likes being King if only for a day, holding court down at Mar a Largo.
But he really has little or no power to turn back globalization, no world leader has. Corporations have outgrown their family homes and have taken over the world and there is nothing the Don can do about it.
He just has to suck it up from his South African heir apparent, hungry for his crown.

USTR will implement President Biden's call for higher tariffs on China by tripling the current Section 301 tariffs applied to Chinese steel and aluminum products from the current average of 7.5% to an average of 22.5%. USTR is now conducting a mandatory four-year review of the Section 301 tariff action.2 The Biden administration will likely use the completion of the four-year review to implement the tariff increases. Imports of Chinese steel and aluminum are also subject to Section 232 tariffs of 25% and 10%, respectively. Combining the Section 232 tariffs with the increased Section 301 tariffs will yield average tariff rates of around 47.5% for steel products and of around 32.5% for aluminum products. Some of these products are also subject to antidumping duties ("ADD") and countervailing duties ("CVD"), which would further increase the tariff level.
