I remember the first time I watched this and said “Well, that was a movie.” I know the troubled history of this movie but I’m kinda glad it hasn’t been lost to time. Serves as a reminder on how NOT to make a video game movie. I think in todays age we’ve gotten it right for the most part.
There's an extended version that makes the movie better on the internet archive. And a sequel comic made by one of the writers, except it hasn't been worked on since 2015 which sucks.
I think the reason they chose Daisy over Peach in this might be because at this point in time her English name was Princess Toadstool, which i guess would've given away that she isn't from the human world (assuming if they had Peach in here she would've fulfilled Daisy's role)
Cyberplumber 2077 is looking great so far! Fun fact: This movie was the first time Luigi and Daisy were ever seen in a romantic relationship. If there’s one thing good about this movie, it’s that.
Well, even that I'm not sure if you can actually fully credit to this movie. You could say Luigi and Princess Daisy were implied romantically in both the manual art and title screen for NES Open Tournament Golf, where she's Luigi's caddie (Peach is Mario's caddie) and Daisy has her arms on Luigi's shoulders, and this game was released 2 years before the SMB movie.
Speaking honestly as someone in their late 30s who's seen the movie many times and even more internet videos covering it...I'm genuinely shocked Alax noticed things not I or anyone else I know did! Thank you SO much for actually reviewing the live action Mario movie this was such a fun review especially when you're pulling off moments like at 10:51 😂
I saw this in theaters twice when it came out, I loved it that much. As a "Mario" movie per say, it's not that great, but it does have a charm all its own and is very much watchable even today. I put this movie in the same category as Hocus Pocus, not just because they both came out that same summer and were critically panned while eventually becoming cult favs, but there's a certain charm to them and you can tell the actors are doing their best given the material. Bob Hoskins as Mario is basically doing Eddie Valiant if he fell off the wagon again, and it's hilarious!

I have an obsession with this film, I don't even like it ironically, I really think it's one of the craziest film productions of the time, taking a simple ip and going absolutely batshit with it, and I think if it had been marketed as any other film, it would be considered today as a hidden cyberpunk gem
Fun fact. Towards the end, John Leguizamo’s arm looks kinda chunky under the blue jumpsuit because there was a scene where him and Bob Hoskins are driving, and during one take, Hoskins was so intoxicated he swerved and crashed into the passenger side of the car. This also broke Leguizamo’s arm and because the budget was already so low and time was so short, they couldn’t afford to have him take a break so they quickly wrapped him up and kept going 💀
3:52 Im guessing they're just not making her a seperate character, which i both understand (so that they don't have to make an entirely new character, out of a bunch of sprites that appeared like thrice? and at the time never again outside of a few spin-offs) (while also giving Princess "Peach" Toadstool a less... irregular name for a archeologist) *and VERY ANGRY-* (If i can't have a sports-loving cocky tomboy princess in my children's movie, why even live?)
