I do hope they learn to actually defend themselves. I grew up near farmers and hunters, there's a very west coast mentality where the animals that want to eat you, or your pets, or your plants are treated as snuggly wiggles instead of problems to be dealt with.
It's different when you know people who hunt, or someone who lost a toddler because they left them alone near the pigs.
Civilization is wonderful, but when there's external forces trying to kill you it's blood that holds the bricks together.
