My ex SIL, who took my side when I divorced her sister almost 20 years ago, is a Jehovah Witless, and actually believes..... when praying, IF you fail to address God by the name of Jehovah, he hears you NOT.....and consequently, ALL of your prayers are in vain. @@YourLocalRealista christian does not best represent humanity. Who represents muslims, hindus, and any other religious belief in the world? A single person's dogma has no place in representing all of humanity.

    • @captainbryce1
      @captainbryce1 4 місяці тому

@@YourLocalRealist I completely disagree. The best person to represent humanity would be a person capable of describing humanity objectively. Only a skeptic and a scientist could do that. Faith is the suspension of skepticism. A religious person is going to have a perspective that is biased towards a particular belief system that not only lacks an empirical basis, but also ignores or shows prejudice against people of other belief systems which contradict their own.
There are 8 billion people in the world, but no religion represents a majority of humans. There are 2.4 billion Christians, 1.9 billion Muslims, a billion Hindus, and 520 million Buddhists. There are an additional 3 billion other people of hundreds of different religions such as Judaism, Sikhism, Mormonism, Baháʼí Faith, Unitarian Universalists, Scientology, Native American spiritual beliefs, African mysticism, Voodoo, Wicca, and various other pagan beliefs.
Not to mention all of the extinct religions that represented huge civilizations of the past such as the ancient Egyptian gods, the Greco-Roman pantheon, or Norse mythology. You also have the new school belief systems such as astrology, tarot cards, palm reading, crystal gazing, crystal healing, psychic abilities, and other paranormal beliefs, as well as thousands of cults worldwide.
You cannot represent all of humanity by sending someone who is devoted to only ONE faith. That's not representing "humanity", it's representing a religion. If intelligent aliens were genuinely curious about human civilization, an anthropologist or a sociologist who could accurately describe these different belief systems objectively would be the best representative for humanity. Not a priest, rabbi, reverend, imam, monk, nun, or a religious minded politician who represents only one country.
Unlike the character Ellie, I do believe that the question is relevant - but for a complete different reason. It's relevant because you want to weed out any candidates who have either irrational beliefs or biases which are inconsistent with the scientific method or objective standards of evidence. Only that type of person could represent humanity in an unbiased way.

I want to read this book. I’d be willing to bet that Carl Sagan, as the ardent atheist that he was, didn’t actually write this. What sickens me most about this scene is that Palmer asked her if she believes in God, not a god, and after she so appropriately asked what the relevance of the question was someone else jumped in and changed the question to whether she believes in a supreme being in one form or another, which suggested any god…the Hindu god Shiva, for example. So the question remained unclear, and her concern over the relevance of the question was never answered either. Ninety-five percent of the world believing in some form of higher power does not make the question relevant, it makes it discriminatory towards the five percent that don’t. Much less people believe in a higher power today. Palmer was discriminatory in suggesting that what somebody believes in should have weight in the determination over whether or not that person should get selected. In reality she never would’ve taken him back after that. It’s a very sad scene. And if that ninety-five percent figure was accurate back then it’s embarrassing to think that many people believed in fairytales. It’s not a mass delusion either, as Palmer inaccurately suggested, but a mass misrepresentation of reality that isn’t based on any credible evidence whatsoever, and is contrary to the laws of nature. (Although people can still choose to continue having faith in the religions they were indoctrinated into, and shouldn’t be discriminated for such choice).

So the man that said "95% of the world's population believes in a supreme being. I think that makes the question more than relevant," is speaking for 95% of the world's population. No one likes anyone else speaking for them unless they want them to. I do agree that there are a lot of religious people in the world, but I can bet 100% that they would not choose a scientific man like him to speak for them. And even if they did, humanity as a whole chose the wrong profession as Ellie is a "Scientist," tasked on bring back "physical" proof and not a "Pastor, Priest, Bishop..and so forth." But then again, who believes in anyone these days whether it's 1997 or 2017 or 2107? What humanity should have done was to try to send both a scientist and a religious person to collaborate their experiences to one another and to back each other up. That's how I view this scene.

No, they intentionally said God, as it referring to the 'one true Christian god' which is entirely inaccurate. 95% of the world isnt christian. If they want someone to represent god, who represents the muslims, hindus, and every other religion out there? Its absolute nonsense to put fictitious beliefs in the way of scientific discovery and the absolute best representation of humanity.

The Mystics Dilemma... You can't convince someone of something you know to be true because there is no evidence they can comprehend or that might be sufficient for them...or Plato's Cave: One who recieved light and truth they cannot adequately communicate to others who are still locked in their limited perspective? And Dr Drumlin is the charlatan who gets what he wants by telling others what they want to hear though he knows it is a lie...until Karma gives him what he deserves. I love this movie. The Scientist becomes the Prophet and only then understands the dilemma.

Early in the movie, her boyfriend tells her about how he found God but she refuses to believe him because he can't physically prove it. At the end, she has an experience she knew she had but her camera didn't work so she couldn't physically prove it and no one in the courtroom believed her except her Christian boyfriend. You want proof of God? search him with all your heart and you'll get it, but good luck trying to convince those who refuse to believe in him about what you know!

If any atheist has to confront the political idiocy of people like this in their lives and they wish to gain the favor of the idiots without actually lying there is a way. Profess that you believe in Spinoza's God. "who reveals himself in the orderly harmony of what exists" -Einstein.

Listen guys, do you want God to actually communicate back to you? There is a way, but its a rather simple method that most won't understand because its way too simple & the brain cannot comprehend such simplicity. Some people see dreams & visions from God, angels, etc, why? What makes them different, nothing really, its God who is the one who chooses who to speak to based on a few things that they do, if you want to know these message me please, simple as that, this is not a lie. Peace n love.

I don't believe you understood the moral of the story.
In the end, when she tries to convince the Jury in the Testimonial interogation, they told her: "You're asking us to put our entire business in faith?". Since what she knows is the truth, others won't believe her cause they'd only look for solid evidence when in fact she did have an experience with Aliens, and when she left they're were others who did believe her, and had faith. Exact same thing goes with religion. It's a Philosophical book!

You may already have these on your shelf by try reading “The Believing Brain” Michael Shermer, it gives insight into how and why we may or may not be convinced of an argument even in the present of good evidence. “Breaking the spell” by Dan Dennett is another good book that explores the evolution of religious thinking and propagation.

    From numba1drycellfan,
divorce isnt aloud in most religions, and people who do homicide would decrease cause homicide mainly only happens when somebody has nothing to live for and dont care about others but religion gives people a reason to hold back. but you are correct about the scientest and actors but personally most of the actors that are athiest i dont really like =P but other people do so that part doesnt count". ..

Could gods be considered a hypothesis in Science? No, not even that, 'cause clearly gods are human projections, and what must be studied is the propagation of beliefs, that exists and has a bloody history. And the fact that gods are pampered, eternally in need of flattery in the form of prayers, rituals, adorations and sacrifices, and brutal in the punishments of non-believers, who must at the same time be feared and loved, is just one of the characteristics they received from the people's relationships with yours emperors, kings and queens, who were and are models for the construction of these folkloric characters called gods. gods are not an inexplicable phenomenon, but well explained by psychology, psychiatry, anthropology, sociology, etc. There's no point in the question "does god exist?", it's like asking if santa claus exists. god and santa claus are both well explained, 'cause they are equivalent folklores, and folklores are studied. It's useful to know why human beings like to believe in things that don't exist, why they like to escape reality to the point of believing even in "flatland", why they are so afraid of the limitations that reality imposes, such as finitude, why invent so many ways to "dodge" their deaths through beliefs in life after death, etc. Why all this fear of reality and life?

Later on when she goes out, she see's people supporting her because they have faith in her EVEN THOUGH there was no evidence.
