When Robert Osborn passed., TCM became hollow to me. I think I enjoyed his commentary as much as the movie itself. Thank you 24fpsfan for bringing these back to life. RIP Robert Osborn. You are missed.
Robert Osborne nailed it. 40 years ago and more importantly, 10 years before the rise of Fox TV and 20 years before Fox News, movie audiences adored "Network" as a tongue-in-cheek satire of the U.S. television industry. Now, we look back at this film and marvel in awe at its terrifying prescience in boldly predicting the future of TV networks and journalism. The late Paddy Chayevsky deserved the Academy Award he received for his original screenplay, which is perhaps one of the best ever.
@@simlei5475 it’s their tribal mentality! Infecting about 80% of the US electorate now. I like being independent so I can recognize reality. For example, that Donald Trump is a crazy old fool AND that Joe Biden is a senile old fool.
I have to agree that it's a perfect film. It feels like a big budget cult movie that balances absurdist comedy, social commentary and heavy drama. The acting is incredible and every character works. The themes and commentary resonate in 2020 and maybe more today than in 1976. I imagine back then that the social statements in the movie came across as over the top. It still feels exaggerated but not by much. It's cynical and hilarious and has a lot of heart and meaning.
Well, personally I think she was best in _Three Days of the Condor_ where she played a yuppie whose world is turned upside in an impossible but true situation. To each his own. RIP Robert Osborne, love ya Drew.
What about Arthur Burghardt? He should’ve gotten an Oscar for the way he shot his gun! Everybody in that movie should be revered to this day but it is interesting that you only focus on the stars… Nothing to do with black and white! There’s just only so much time and so much praise to go around… But here is an opportunity to get into those unsung heroes of network… Instead today we have to deal with the fallout of the anger from that lack of recognition... NOT anything to do with race but where is the conversation to explain that? That everyone is full of shit and competitive as all get out? Anyway Does it go over Drew’s head that the Patty Hearst and Black Panther characters are discussing distribution in their contracts w CBS News? They’re implying its all staged propaganda ... a brilliant commentary on everything from Trump to even BLM today... while you’re busy praising all of the STARS the glorious actors it really does go over your head doesn’t it? You don’t even know the names of the black actors and now that’s why they’re so bent out of shape the genius in Marlene Warfield as Lauren Hobbs a caricature of Angela Davis my God it’s phenomenal except for the way she pronounces “defecate“ she even makes me want to pronounce it the way she pronounces it she was amazing so because these brilliant performances go unrecognized all the time they give us the love craft county crap on HBO or Showtime whatever it is.. did you even know that it’s Walter Cronkite’s daughter who plays the Patty Hearst character!? “Walter Cronkite and John Chancellor were approached for the Howard Beale role, but neither was interested. Cronkite's daughter Kathy Cronkite agreed to play left-wing radical Mary Ann Gifford, a character loosely based on Patricia Hearst.” that’s why “Oscars so white“ fragility is now giving us instead of brilliant screen plays like network or even wag the dog we get “love craft country“ where somebody on a budget decided oh look we have all this 50s stuff let’s go back in time until old stories and pretend no progress has been made instead of more movies like wag the dog when we get people inspired to think a little more deeply about what they’re watching right before our eyes the end of our fucking democracy but yeah you go on about Peter Finch is brilliant acting don’t even mention that amazing scene with Robert Duvall saying “you’re fired“ in the backstabbing element that all of us real people don’t survive so people like you mediocre in your talent but amazing and your connections get to thrive congratulations 1% because now you’ve blown everything
Despite the criticism here, the two major "Black folks" here are possibly the most intelligent in the movie. A Communist party head with a strong sense of what's real, and a cult head with a legal mind.

Robert Osborn is not dead he on the island of Fuji wit Bruce Lee
@@eggbertinkabod1121 Your snarky comment is rude and inappropriate and is hurtful to the Osborn family.

Surely one of the best uses of celluloid since it's invention, Network 1976, RIP Peter Finch

It seems more like MSNBC to me. Also, the rise of Reality TV which, of course, has nothing to do with Fox.
@@cathycartee4180 cathy, stop watching fox news.
@@ince55ant I've never seen Fox News. You're obviously a CNN viewer ... 3 years behind the times. Keep being a douche -- it suits you.
How can you both have watched that Movie and not understand that Fox and MSNBC are of the same ilk? That's really sad to me.
