  • Official audio for Symarip's skinhead anthem from 1969
Formed in the mid-Sixties by seven young British-based musicians of Afro-Caribbean descent, Symarip first made their mark as the Bees, supporting Prince Buster on a nationwide tour in 1967. Soon after, the group was signed to President, changed their name to the Pyramids and found UK chart success with ‘Train Tour To Rainbow City’.
By the close of the decade they were recording under a number of aliases, notably the Seven Letters and Symarip, and it was as the latter that they achieved their greatest UK success, ‘Skinhead Moonstomp’. Greatly inspired by Derrick Morgan’s ‘Moon Hop’, which made the British pop charts early in 1970, the recording became the most successful record of all time to name-call skinheads, the UK youth movement who widely embraced the exciting new reggae sound sfrom Jamaica, so proving instrumental in introducing the genre into mainstream British consciousness.
Although not a chart hit at the time of its release, the track finally made its way onto the UK chart listings in 1980, following the Specials’ celebrated live rendering of the song, which featured on their best-selling 'Too Much Too Young (The Special A.K.A. Live)' EP, which became a Number One pop hit on 2 February of that year.

    SKINHEAD MOONSTOMP LYRICS
I want all you skinheads to get up on your feet
Put your braces together and your boots on your feet
And give me some of that old moonstomping
Get ready, we got three million miles to reach on the moon
So let's start getting happy now, ready?
Yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah, yeah yeah, yeah yeah
Now, before we reach on the moon, fellas
We got to make sure that everything is spic and span, alright?
We got to make sure you shine your boots, brush your teeth
Because the man on the moon looking different from man on the Earth
    That's what I said boys
Now remember, I am your boss skinhead speaking, my name is Caleb
Alright, and remember, I'm the boss
You can see, look at my boot, or my feet, or whatever you want to call it
And you can see I've got the biggest boots, that's not right
Now, when I say "sing", I want everyone to get in the groove and start singing because we're on the moon
    Ready?
One time, yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah, yeah yeah, yeah yeah
Yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah, yeah yeah, yeah yeah
Now, I want all you fellas to gather around me,
And we're gonna start stomping, ready?
    Here we go, one time
Now, we want to make sure when we get back on the earth
We've got the moon on top of us
Now, while we finish this thing on the top of the moon
We have to wait till we get back to earth to have a drink, okay?
    Alright!
Now, we want to make sure that everybody is still in the groove when we get back
So let's start singing one more time Ready?
Yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah, yeah yeah, yeah yeah! Aha!
Yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah, yeah yeah, yeah yeah!
Come on, moonwalk, moonwalk, come on, moonwalk!
    Skinheads, I'm your boss..

Not that anyone will read this, but I'm just sitting here smiling listening to this. My stepdad died a few years ago and left me his record collection, knowing I loved the format. When he was still alive, I'd always say to him "We have to get your records down one day because I'd love to see what you listened to!" and he'd always say "one day, one day". Unfortunately that day never came, but I finally started bringing them down today and this was one of his records. Robbie loved reggae, ska, rocksteady, roots..all of that. This too, he loved Trojan. We didn't have the best of relationships, until he was diagnosed with cancer and we decided to leave all that shit behind us because it wasn't worth it. Seeing all his records now he's had since he was a teenager with his little labels on them so his brothers wouldn't nick them, some written on there in that messy teenage boy's handwriting.. I feel closer to him that I ever have, that's our one connection. Music. That and going to watch Cambridge United. Anyway, I just needed to write this out. I miss you Robbie mate, wish you were here with Mum instead of me. See you again one day.

      Snap!
Met my future husband in 1979.
We were saying last week, we'd buy Melody Maker/NME every week to see where we'd be going that weekend.
We'd jump a train and somehow get to Camden or Islington and see Madness etc whenever we could. Tickets were only a few quid!
He'd be there with all his mates, I'd be there with mine. We'd all end up dancing, drunk, smoking...having gone out with less than 20 quid! If we were lucky we'd get the last train out of Charing X or the night bus home to S.E London. We'd always meet loads of people we knew on there too.
Funny tho, cos we never gave much thought about how we'd get home😂!
      Great times.....

Absolutely right, being a skinhead had nothing to do with race or colour, it was all about the music, and the clothes, the look. It was a celebration of Jamaican culture and music, and particularly Jamaican music, rather than Caribbean music as a whole, which has many different genres and styles of Reggae music all fantastic in their own way 😊

And most of all, it was about being proud of being working class, no matter what your color or creed. That at the end of the day, you can have a pint with the boys, listen to reggae/ska, and celebrate your wins and losses with the crew, and no bosses, cops or politicans can take that away.

Did you ever read "The Paint House"? It's a very interesting book.. essential reading for anyone interested in the true beginnings of skinhead culture. It contains many extensive interviews with the Collingwood skins of East London.. essentially where it all began. They were interviewed by Daniel and McGuire for the book. They were the original Skinheads who started the fad involving tens of thousands of British kids within a year. Then the eight month period known as the "Fad of '69" began the diversification of Skinhead.. I think many mistake this with the beginnings.. by '69 it was well established. Today, of course, there are white power skinheads, anti-racist, gay, and so-called "trads," short for traditional, among others. The various groups operating beneath the Skinhead banner debate whether the original Skinheads were racist or listened to reggae. "The Paint House", which precedes modern debate by many decades, definitively answers both questions: The original Skinheads were actually very racist and did not listen to reggae, because to them "it was was black music." The original Skinheads ranted mostly against black immigrants living in England, but also against Pakistanis and Jews. Skinheads were actually violently racist from the beginning. Anybody wanting to learn the origins of the worldwide racist Skinhead phenomenon, must read The Paint House. Yes, by all means, there were obviously anti-racist skinheads, but they really became a movement in much later years, I'd imagine you were a Sharp probably in the 80s? But, not the originals.. people saying that the original skinheads were anti-racist is simply not true.. regardless of how anyone feels on the matter or what they tell themselves to make themselves feel better about it. But reality is reality. I personally believe the origins were more racist than many know or wish to admit. A lot of the people who claim "It wasn't racist in the beginning" weren't there.. and if you really press them on the matter, usually are quite unknowledgeable on the origins, I find.

Its such a fucking shame what the nat-front and american clowns did with the concept of the skinhead. People dont even believe me when I tell them skinhead was a reggae and football working class thing, that grew out of jamaican rude-boy culture, not the whack hateful nob-ends people seem to think now. It was all about the working class and enjoying life with your crew, not hateing on folks.
