Discworld is a comic fantasy[1] book series written by the English author Terry Pratchett, set on the Discworld, a flat planet balanced on the backs of four elephants which in turn stand on the back of a giant turtle. The series began in 1983 with The Colour of Magic and continued until the final novel The Shepherd's Crown, which was published in 2015, following Pratchett's death. The books frequently parody or take inspiration from classic works, usually fantasy or science fiction, as well as mythology, folklore and fairy tales, and often use them for satirical parallels with cultural, political and scientific issues.
Forty-one Discworld novels were published. Apart from the first novel in the series, The Colour of Magic, the original British editions of the first 26 novels, up to Thief of Time (2001), had cover art by Josh Kirby. After Kirby's death in 2001, the covers were designed by Paul Kidby. The American editions, published by HarperCollins, used their own cover art. Companion publications include eleven short stories (some only loosely related to the Discworld), four popular science books, and a number of supplementary books and reference guides. The series has been adapted for graphic novels, theatre, computer and board games, and television.
Discworld books regularly topped Sunday Times best-sellers list, making Pratchett the UK's best-selling author in the 1990s. Discworld novels have also won awards such as the Prometheus Award and the Carnegie Medal. In the BBC's Big Read, four Discworld novels were in the top 100, and a total of fourteen in the top 200. More than 80 million Discworld books have been sold in 37 languages.

This was the first book of the diskworld i ever listened to while growing up. I didnt have any actual parenting growing, no one ever paid attention to me or noticed I existed, but something about Terry Pratchett made me feel seen.
I ended up being able to grow up and find a family who loves me, and I bonded deeply with my mother in law. Now im sitting her as she is slowly dying of dementia and the only reason i can be brave and stay with her wothout breaking down, even though my heart is breaking, is because of Terry Pratchett.

Grew up near White Horse Hill, it was Berkshire then.
Many of his descriptions remind me of the villages of that area.
Prachetts amazing writing with interwoven humour makes him one of a kind.
Of course sadly missed, just have to try & work out for ourselves what other adventures the witches had.✊❤️

The idea that summer is a woman and winter is a man exists purely because women would rather wear light flowy dresses than long underwear and heavy sweaters. It's sad really.

    • @inezeaton
      @inezeaton Місяць тому +1

That’s how you perceive it? I think it has more to do with the rockin’ reproductive powers of women and men’s propensity to destruction. Also, I’m reminded of the identical gender roles applied to seasons which is at least centuries old but more likely millennia old.
      What is sad about that?

@@inezeaton It was a joke, mostly on myself by seeming shallow.
On the other hand, the traditional interpretation gets it all wrong as well. Winter is no more destructive than sleep. And women are only as reproductive as men.

This deserves more likes! May I suggest you let potential listeners know it is read by Terry (I assume it is, sounds suspiciously like him to me) himself, not someone else, as some other versions available are, or worse, an AI. Also a more appropriate screen pic would be even better. Otherwise, this one is perfect, and gratitude to you for it. Have liked and subscribed x

      What are ‘Briggs’s’??
People with the surname Briggs? Not very likely when you see how many books he’s sold??
It’s on loads of different channels so I wouldn’t worry bout how many have read it, he one of most successful authors ever, plus never thought that gave him the right to speak about political subjects or anything else that people don’t need to know personal opinions on.

@@user-xd7dk3oy3q in response to your comment to @stoicJohnson ... briggs are a type of goblin, aren't they? Unless... I just hilariously made that up and the briggs referred to is in fact an author associated with Discworld called Stephen Briggs who reads the audiobook aloud that we listened to, in reply to my comment about who was reading it? Unless... he meant the author Raymond Briggs was reading it, who wrote about a very different snowman to the Discworld one Terry wrote about in Wintersmith... Which do you find more likely? At first I thought your comment was a joke - now I'm just finding it confusing and most of it not really relevant to anything in my own/stoics comments...

@@lydiasefton4780 well, it's on the Everand (audiobook subscription service) version. I checked to be sure and it is the exact same music and it's also a bit loud.
This is one of my comfort reads (listen tos?, lol). I listen to it a lot and it's always had the music when I do. Maybe there are different versions? Idk. Is your version narrated by Stephen Briggs?
I always found it a bit odd because this is the only Tiffany Aching book that has that music in it.
I also just thought the OP was being a bit rude. The channel is providing an audiobook. I thought the whole "doing this for us or you?" was uncalled for.
