From West to East. Chasing KiwiRail Coal Train 844 (4K)

On Friday The 16th February 2024 we chase after DXC's 5206 and 5270 with fully loaded coal train number 844 as it makes its way Eastbound to Christchurch where it'll be unloaded the next morning in Lyttelton. We see the train getting up to full power as it tackles the many many grades along the line aswell as crossing over with train 826 in Red Jacks and also being assisted through the Otira Tunnel with the 4 DXC bankers! Sit back relax and enjoy the sounds of these old girls at their finest

Excellent video. I’m curious how the helper (banker, I guess) operation is run. Do the bankers have a seperate crew? Is the road crew just along for the ride through the tunnel, or do they run the whole thing? Do the bankers return to Otira on their own, or do they help trains in the opposite direction?

From what I think this could be wrong but they have people that do the Arthurs pass to Otira section and they mu the engines... west bound coal train he through unasited while the TranzAlpine gets the bankers on the front and rear in case of emergancy. freight wise im too sure on that but they tend to head back light as for trains heading east it is a steep 1 in 33 grade though the 8 km otira tunnel...
