This video, is more powerful then I think you realise.
A lot of us gardeners find peace, sometimes the only peace, when with our plants.
Its nice to know we're not alone in the emotion it brings. The only time I feel content is either tending to my plants or just sitting at the plot, in silence, watching the wildlife go about days.
I'm sorry you're noticing your parents fragility. It's hard. Your description was so spot on. Our parents were giants, strong, protecting. Then one day, they just seem so small and those roles switch. You become the strength, the giant, the protector.

One of your finest videos for so many reasons. I remember clearly the day I realized my Mum had passed into the realm of being 'elderly' and frailer and it was a shock and reminded me I was getting older as well.
Your wee greenhouse is undeniably the best thing you have done for yourself, it has become in no short order your sanctuary and is a blessing.
Jammies in my garden ...absolutely! As soon as the weather is warm enough, I am out in my garden in my shorty nightgown with my wellies and a cup of tea, snacking on whatever berry is ripe. In autumn and winter I go out to fill all the bird and critter feeders in my thick fleecy jammies, a barn jacket and my wellies...it is all about mornings and jammies in my garden year round!
Sending you hugs, hope you are feeling better about 'stuff' soon . 💜

It's worrying at our age when you notice a decline in your parents. My mum's in her 80's and we've noticed over the last year or so a real decline in her mentally. Having said that she doesn't see it. You just ask her. She's fine! Not to mention argumentative and difficult! LOL She said to me the other day, "I expect your father and that woman are probably married by now!" I said, "Mum. They got married in 1986!" to which she replied, "I know that. Do you think I'm an idiot!"

I walk down to the polytunnel around 6.30 to open up the doors and roof vent, then come back to a coffee on the patio. And just look at teh garden changing peacefully in the spring.
My dad was here f 2 days this week, helped me clear and mulch a flower bed. After it he lost a lot of steam and had to sit down for a while before he set off home. I treasure every day or afternoon I get to spend with him in the garden, especially after losing mum last year.
A garden and every small space within it is a beautiful and calming place to be.
    Happy Easter all

Dear Tony, there is a huge shift when we recognize the fragility of age on our parents faces. The sense that we need to protect them, to spend time and really listen to them. You have a real gift now, take the time to talk to your Mom and dad. record their stories now because when they are gone who will you ask? It is a precious gift to hear their laughter, their voices, mmm and say, do you remember when?...
Yes to both classical music and wandering through the garden in my pjs.

Haha! I have just come in from doing my check of the garden in my pyjamas 😂.
My house is overwhelmed by precious seedlings and every year I am transfixed by the magic of growing a plant from a tiny seed.
Sometimes it's a shock to realise that we are all on a journey, some of us are further on than others. It is the way of all things, we know that so well as gardeners.
I think the trick is to spread your love while you can.

Quite a profound posting, Tony, and some thoughtful replies. I know exactly where you are coming from. We have two very frail mothers, both in their 90s, and I have a old friend, same age as me, in a hospice. It's a weight to bear, but the allotment does lift the spirits, both the plants and the wildlife (and I can see St. Mary's lighthouse from mine).
It's sometimes better than home, to be honest.

We lost my mum in November to Alzheimer’s and to see how fast she went down hill still breaks my heart and as for my pops well like you said a giant I’m starting to see his age, he was also telling me he’s scared like who would have thought a man like him would be scared but he is he’s scared cause he doesn’t know if he will have everything done that he wanted for me and my sister. Hi Tony, I also check out my greenhouse and cabin every morning at around 5.30 to stroke and talk to my seedlings etc. This year is particularly poignant for me because in mid Feb I tripped over in the garden, ended up in hospital with fractured ribs and during my stay they did an array of scans etc, and last month I was diagnosed with an aggressive form of breast cancer. I start chemo next Friday 14th and have been desperately trying to nurse along my seedlings and pot up dahlias etc before then. Last week I was told that I should avoid gardening because scratched and or bites can cause infection (which is particularly dangerous when on Chemo)but I am determined to support my plants to thrive and in doing so help me to survive and thrive this diagnosis.

You've entered that phase where suddenly you realise your parents are succumbing to old age and getting more vulnerable as each week passes. I've been there, the final few years of my parents' lives were the most stressful of my life.
The roles are reversed when elderly parents start to need your support, it can take some getting used to. Then you look at all those healthy young plants, bursting with life, and it is a welcome antidote. Gardening is great therapy and your little greenhouse will reward you massively for the effort you made to set it up. Gorgeous green zone to lose yourself in.

Absolutely Tony, its the first thing i do, also straight after work. I come in drop my work bag and carry on straight through to the back garden and into the greenhouse, and hubby brings me a coffee. I need to check on all my babies, like you said, you bring them into this world and hope they are going to see it through till the end, be it a harvest of vegetables, fruits or flowers. I know you dont get the flower thing but its that same feeling when a seed germinates I get when I see a flower bloom into life knowing I germinated that plant and molly coddled it into this beautiful flower that i am now staring at. And YES I take my bluetooth speaker into the greenhouse everytime without fail, and to the allotment, I love listening to music while I tend to my plants. Its my happy place. Yes it can be stressfull at times, and I have a lot to be stressed about at present, and have been at the end of my tether since my mum passed 18 months back. And I really didnt need to see my allotment flooded again within 4 months. And as horrid to see the damage it caused yesterday, I am still lifted thinking about how I know it will look late summer when its all planted up, and I still have plans swirling around my head while I am assessing the damage. I have had so much personal upheaval and trauma in the last 18 months. I feel the allotment is all I have to take my mind off LIFE and all the crap I am having to deal with. So yes, our little oasis, be it a little window box to an allotment/small holding does our mental health and well being a world of good. Is it the circle of life? is it because we enjoy the end result? is it because we feel the need to be caring for something? or all of the above? which ever way you look at it. ITS A POWERFUL BEAST and it doesnt know how important it is to us that rely on it for our inner sanctum. x

So when I put the music on it takes me back to them days tony.

My normally super fit hubby Tony who cycles 40-60km 3 x week, kayaks, bush walks has recently done his back now severe sciatica and so incapacitated, earlier in year diagnosed with angina necessitating a coronary stent, were both 79 this year and it’s devastating for him. Our kids live interstate so I’m sure they’ll be as shocked as you. I hope your mums back improves sooner than later but it is a slow process. Enjoy those wonderful plants there doing great. Take care chin up.
No pjs outside the front door were too overlooked

As my greenhouse is at my allotment I can’t get away with going in my PJ’s 😂 but my allotment is my happy place it’s brought me so much peace over the last year. Hope your mum feels better soon it’s hard when parents start to show their age but spending time with family is precious, not everyone gets the chance. Enjoy your Easter and take care of you, your family and of course your plants ❤

I thought I was the only one out in the garden in my dressing gown checking on the greenhouse. I encouraged my dad to take on an allotment after my mum died and he was there most days even at the age of 92. He passed away last year so your video was touching to say the least. Miserere Gregorio Allegri for me by the way and Vivaldi of course.

I quite like the idea of popping into the garden first thing in my pyjamas....but, since I don't wear them, if I went out in my normal night attire I think my plant, to say nothing of my neighbours, might die of shock 😂. I hope all goes well with your family, lad, it's hard but none of us are getting any younger. Take care mate

Hi Tony. Sorry if this is a longer comment, I hope you get a chance to read it along with the other heartfelt comments that this video has instigated.
10 months ago my beautiful wife passed away too young with cancer after 48 years of marriage. When she became ill I closed my business down after 27 years to care for her so am now retired (I'm 68).
It seemed like overnight I lost my wife, my job, and my purpose in life. I struggled for a while looking for a reason to go on and, thankfully, I finally found this in my veg garden. A few months ago I found your channel and viewing your daily post over a coffee is my 5am routine (I am in Australia so your posts are only a couple of hours old). There are so many vloggers out there to show you the 'secrets' to growing this and that but that's not what you do. You show the trials and tribulations as well as the successes of gardening and your personal connection to the land comes through in your videos.
This is just my clumsy way of saying your posts matter a lot to many people in so many ways, I'm sure you didn't expect this when you started. Thank you for your honest posts and keep up the good work. I've always loved the saying 'A Gardner plants because he believes in the future"

Big test for you today Tony bought four bags of Ewe Grow instead of my usual .....fingers crossed.
You were right about water retention as by eck they were heavy hefting them into the boot after the rain..... Cumbria eh.
Anyway yeah I do stroll round the garden in shorts and stuff with a brew......bit frosty this morning ice in the metal water dish thingy.
Veg on hold as building work due so no room until they've built the extension and bugger off. Therefore I'm getting veg gardening fix from your Channel and the other people on UA-cam 👍🙂
We all have secrets, don't tell anyone but in the 90s when I was dragged off to watch the ballet at the Bolshoi in Moscow (I was a mature stoodent on a History trip to Russia) I really enjoyed it. Me!! a Cumbria shipyard thug watching the ballet* and loving it.......keep that to yourself though 😉😉😉

Classic FM really brings your thoughts down on a peaceful level, although I really do love all music from early 50's to end of 70's are the best for me, having an older brother and sister advanced my learning. Love my potting shed, I only have room for pots, but the assortment of veg and bright flowers together does wonders for my mindset 😅😅. Love your posts, I'm from Leeds by the way, look after yourself. x

You seem to enjoy the technical side of creating your perfect cup of coffee, might I suggest you try getting yourself a Panasonic bread maker and putting the same mind set and experimental
enthusiasm into creating the perfect loaf to create the perfect sandwich with some of your salad crops. ( I'm a big sourdough fan ).

    Hey Tony,
A very touching, powerful vlog mate. Probably more than you realise.
Life is finite my friend, trust me, I know after losing my wife last year.
Our happy place was our allotment which I still work on, mainly because its peaceful and I can reflect on memories together.
We all get to meet again, but it's hard for those that gave to wait a bit longer.
Incedently I grew Japanese black truffles kast year and they were amazing.
Also grew Calabash and Belladine from Nickys nurseries.
    Chin up fella.

I can relate to this Tony. Whatever’s on your mind, gardening just helps us offload and there’s always something you find that cheers you up or something that invigorates the senses and takes you back to fond memories. No matter what the size, there is just something healing about a green space. Thanks for sharing my friend, I really enjoyed this 🌱👍

Tony, are any of your seedlings showing signs of sun scorching? Mine are in the conservatory for the light and this recent spell of sunshine down here in Sussex seems to have turned some leaves crispy and a few others white/see-through. I thought it was powerdery mildew at first but some of them look burnt? The only place they get the light they need is the conservatory (I bring them in at night).
