Carving Marble with Traditional Tools

  • Prior to the use of power tools, the same basic implements were used for stone carving for hundreds of years. Many of the sculptor's tools had a variety of functions and could be used at different stages of the carving process. In this video, watch a contemporary sculptor demonstrate the use of traditional tools--such as the tooth chisel, the point chisel, the drill, and the rasp--as he creates a finished figure of a woman from a block of marble.

      After a few months of carving stone sculptures every day, I suddenly had the urge to do some pull ups. I did about eight fingertip pull ups - before that, I don't think I could've done one if my life depended on it. People would joke about my hand crushing handshakes.

    How the heck did the ancient romans do all this so detailed

    • @dante8999
      @dante8999 5 років тому +157

      First they would make a clay sculpture and spend months to years refining the details... Then they would use large calipers to get the angles and details right by copying what they already made. This technique is still very popular today

    does the marble sculptor, especially for the realistic model, has no room for error or mistake?

    • @julietfischer5056
      @julietfischer5056 5 років тому +1

      There's little to no room for any sort of error in stonecarving. It depends on the subject, and where on the sculpture the mistake happens. Otherwise, the sculptor must begin again.

      That depends on what the artist intends. I've seen sculptures that look as if they could get up and walk away, and others that are deliberately blocky and crude-seeming, and a variety of forms in between.
      Or they chose to end the video there because it's more of the same until the sculptor finished the piece.
