Composer here....no one seems to have identified the recording of Connotations on this posting (including the person who posted it) - if I'm not mistaken it's the one by Grimethorpe conducted by Elgar Howarth (The History of Brass Band Music - The Modern Era - Doyen Label) - and very fine it is too! In fact, arguably the finest (and I should know!)...

Thank you for your message. This sound source is the band you say.

Hello Mr Gregson, I first played this as a teenager at the 1979 Europeans in the Albert Hall and can still recall the excitement (or was it fear!) of sitting on stage every time I hear a recording . I never thought I would ever play it again but forty years later and almost to the day it was the set test piece in our local championships and still remains a favourite of mine.

Edward Gregson One of your finest compositions (of many!) in my humble opinion!

Remember playing this piece with you all weekend circa 1983 ? with the Lancashire Youth Brass Band - great times. I was on Euph at the time and remember dropping you back at Preston train station in a green Beetle with the then conductor (sadly decd some years ago). Fabulous memories

I remember being at the Royal Albert Hall in 1977 and being completely blown away by the piece. Little did I know my future wife was at the same contest.... or that we'd both play it some years later!

Brings back so many memories. I played this with Kilmarnock Concert Brass in the 80s. Was a great part of my life and musical education. Many thanks to you Edward

Ill take Mr Browns word for it. 1977, really, strewth! Idve been 14 with my late Dad. Absolutely fell in love with this piece. Years since I heard it, as oddly, playing in a band, and listening to music every moment I can, I hardly ever listen to bands. Must sort that out!

One of my all time favorite pieces of brass band music. Played it several times in competitions is England and with Utah Premiere Brass (Utah, USA). I love playing the cornet solos...I feel that they were written just for me! Thank you Mr Gregson for amazing compositions and solos...The Plantagenets, Laudate Dominum etc!

A fabulous work which I must have first heard in Melbourne in about 1982/3. I have to say it was not played as wells this.

A recording with a breadth of sound and approach - usually in a contest setting it would be full of nervous excitement - a most rewarding listen at these speeds with the quality of the band fully committed to the reading. f Elgar Howarth.

I was there when they won at the Royal Albert Hall against some fantastic competitors. I think everyone knew what the outcome would be though. The very best of brass playing. Stunning BDM

I remember sitting next to the composer during a NABBA competition where I think we were both taken back by the break EVERY band in the division made in section 2 measure 4 after beat 1. I could only attribute it to the 'shared copies' in circulation where some band marked it before sharing it with the others. And yes I have one of those copies for Solo Horn. (#copyright).

Why do people insist on posting these without crediting the perfomers?? Are the listeners supposed to be psychic?
