If you ever make another video on Historic LGBTQ+ people(which I'm sure you will), you might want to include Julie D'aubigny. She was an opera singer in the 17th century and openly bisexual. She also cross-dressed. Julie was never afraid to get into a sword duel over a cute lady(or lad) and, when questioned about her true gender, would rip open her shirt and fight with her breasts out. In order to provoke a fight, she would often shout taunts to the men in question. And she's also proof that non-straight people can be religious. Absolute legend.

Could you do a historical profile on Sally Ride? She was the first american woman in space. It wasnt revealed till after her death that she was lesbian when her partner wrote her obituary. Speaking of education. Did you know that Sophia Jex Blake is on the English History GCSE curriculum as of 2021. I finished high school last year and started the History GCSE in 2018 when I began the course and had known of Jex Bake before then. Also Queen Elizabeth I was probably ace, famously never married, maybe had a romantic relationship or 2 and unknown whether or not she was virgin and she is obviously on the curriculum (one of if not the greatest of English monarchs).

@@jennifermccarthy6733 I don't recall that she had any lovers in terms of sexual interaction. That whole virgin queen thing was an immense source of political and religious power, she as a canny politician would never have jeopardised this. She undoubtable fell in love with Robert Dudley and would have married him, if he wasn't implicated in the death of his wife in an unfortunate fight with a staircase.

@@bensmith1955 "male lovers" at a Catholic school aren't the same as "male lovers" in every day life 🤣
Somehow never occured to me (or my history teacher apparently) that 'normal' people mightn't consider them lovers just because they 'never had' sex 🤷‍♀️
Although I guess you did purport she was ace and not aro, and she could have been ace and still had the male lovers... 🤔 The implication that I remember however was "she was Christian and never married, (because then she'd have shared the monarchy), so of course she wouldn't have consummated a relationship, however much she wanted to"
Maybe (hopefully!) it's taught with a different emphasis now (or perhaps it always was in non-christian schools!?)
I thought there was another potential match - beyond Dudley? (You'll have to forgive me, I'm going back 15 years!)

    • @bensmith1955

@@jennifermccarthy6733 yes there were many other matches such as the brother of the French king (not married because of politics and religion) and Ivan the Terrible (not sure on why they never married, Elizabeth was dropped from my school due to Covid). I also never went to a Catholic school, rather a Church of England school. There has also not been much evidence, if any to suggest that she had physical lovers and I believed that there was one instance which she was disgusted by a conversation on it (I may be wrong, again I didn't complete my course on Elizabeth at GCSE but I will revisit her next year for A-level).

I feel like everyone should know about Mark Ashton, he was truly great man who died too young and could have done so much more. Mark was a political and civil rights activist, ever since he got into politics as a teenager he helped to fight for the rights of anyone being oppressed whether that be by their employer, the government or both. In 1984 a few months into the miners strike it was becoming more and more obvious to him that there were similarities in the way the government were treating the miners and their families and the way the government treated LGBT people. At the 1984 London Pride March he and his friend Mike Jackson carried buckets asking for donations to help support the miners and their families. Shortly after the march the group Lesbians and Gays Support the Miners was formed, the group spent the next year raising money to help buy food, clothes, pay bills and pay the bail of people who were being wrongly arrested on the picket lines in the Dulais Valley, South Wales. They raised approximately £20,000 over that year. When the strike ended the miners and their families didn't forget the support they had received from them and at the 1985 London Pride March the miners and their families came to London and alongside LGSM they led the march that year, it was one of the first times that such a large amount of straight people marched in solidarity with the LGBT community at the London Pride March. The miners further supported the LGBT community after that by helping to push motions raised at the Labour Party Conference to enshrine gay and lesbian rights into their manifesto, something which although it had been raised before and getting denied, finally passed. Mark continued to fight for other workers rights over the next couple of years and while standing on the picket lines alongside print workers in 1987 he began to suffer terrible cough which only got worse and more painful. He had been diagnosed with HIV about 18 months earlier but he never let it stop him from fighting for others. On the 30th January 1987 it had eventually got so bad that he had to go to the hospital, it was then that he was diagnosed with AIDS. Mark died on the 11th February 1987 from Pneumonia brought on by AIDS. He was only 26 years old but in his short life he had, he managed to help bring solidarity between two communities, the miners and LGBT people, which even just a few months before LGSM was formed would have seemed impossible but that solidarity is something that was finally able to bring in some protection for Queer people and i think that's pretty amazing. The movie "Pride" and the book "Pride: The Unlikely Story of the True Heroes of the Miners' Strike" are great for learning some more about Mark and LGSM. Also the song "For a Friend" by The Communards was written for Mark by Jimmy Somerville who was Marks best friend and a member of LGSM. The song is quite a beautiful tribute to a great man lost way to soon.

Someone that could be presented in a episode of your historical figures serie is Rose Valland, for her bravery and her determination to protect art in time of war despite putting her life on the line. During WW2, she spied the looting by Nazis of the collections of art that passed at the Jeu de Paume Museum and were from the greatests Jewish art dealers in Paris. With the help of her notes, the Monuments Men knew almost all the locations of the storage of the art that was stolen.
While she never came out publicly, she did publish the thesis of her lover after her death. She is now burried with this lover in the familial plot.
Another interesting fact is that she was more educated that other women of her time and that she pursue higher education despite her socio-economie backgroung.

In Poland we had a lesbian power-couple of Maria Konopnicka and Maria Dulębianka (called affectionly Piotrek, eng. Peter, by Konopnicka). They met for the first time in 1886 latest (as it's not known precisly) and the first mencion of Dulębianka in Konopnicka's letter we have is from 1889. Konopnicka was a poet, novelist, children's writer, translator, journalist, critic. Dulębianka an artist, poet, publicist. Both were feminist activists for women's rights and for Polish independence. Maria Dulębianka even ran as a candidate in the 1908 election for the Parliament of Galicia (name of a crownland of the Austrian Empire in Poland, as it was under ocupation from 1772 till 1918), but was rejected because she was a woman. Thanks to them and other feminists, women in Poland gained voting rights in 1918.

The term "asexuality" wasn't the official term back. Yes, there have always been asexual individuals throughout human existence, but they were never referred to as "asexuals" until 1960s. Asexuality has never been illegal, and it has usually gone unnoticed.

@@Lfufu20 The Wikipedia list is incomplete. Carl Schlegel the German-born reverend and one of the first modern gay activists in the U.S. wrote in a 1907 speech: “Let the same laws for all the intermediate stages of sexual life: the homosexuals, heterosexuals, bisexuals, asexuals, be legal as they are now in existence for the heterosexuals,”
And the famous sexologist Magnus Hirschfeld also used the term in “The Role of Homosexual Men and Women in Society” in 1920, when suggesting that “we must (if this were possible) describe” philosophers like Immanuel Kant “as being asexual.”
Frequent references can also be found for asexuality as a sexual orientation within the early trans community: In 1952, the magazine Transvestia claimed that, while most trans people “are entirely heterosexual,” “some are also asexual.”
As for asexuality never having been illegal, examples of compulsory sexuality laws include the voidability of marriage for lack of consummation in some jurisdictions.
