Butters name came from Eric Stough, an animator on the show. He was very sweet and meek, so Trey started calling him his "Little Buddy", and then "Budders", and his real nickname became Butters. The last name "Stotch" is how Stogh is pronounced.
I read Catcher in the Rye a long time ago. As I remember, Kyle's analysis was spot on. The main character was a just spoiled teenager who spent the whole book complaining.
That's pretty surface level reading, Holden is an asshole but understanding why he's an asshole is what the book is all about. He's trapped inbetween adulthood and childhood in a time period where adults won't just level with him and try to understand and help him go through what he's going through. It's about the death of innocence and goes further to evaluate what that innocence is even worth to begin with. Holden is meant to be a confused, angry, hypocritical kid railing against a system, he's learning for the first time just how unfair the world is in a world of bible-thumping flag-saluting hypocrites who just ignore all the world's problems and tell their kids to march in a straight line, because that's what worked for them
Im so proud of my boy Butters standing up for himself and even if he knew he didn't write the book he still knew that the boys were manipulative and bad friends that tried to throw him under the bus so he called them out on it. I also think its HILARIOUS how realistic the vomiting is even down to the spitting and intense gagging sounds. Its funny how the boys and even kids today are so desensitized to gruesome and explicit things tjat Catcher In the Rye seemed like preachy poem to them, which is a kinda disheartening how true that is for kids today.
Catcher in the Rye is an old American novel that is used as a teaching tool in highschool. It used to be controversial because it had some themes and language that were considered adult... in the 1950s. But by today's standards kids see worse stuff on the internet all the time, so Catcher in the Rye seems tame now. It's been a while since I read it but I think it's about an adolescent who's depressed and cynical and makes commentary about how phony he thinks everyone is. (How he describes the masks people wear in social situations.) Hence why Butters called his friends "phonies". It may've been seen as edgy and thought-provoking in the 50s, and if you keep that in mind there are things to appreciate about it. But I think it might be a little basic compared to the kind of stuff you're used to now.
This episode is using the book as a metaphor for the show itself. The creators have talked about how they’re often just doing things to be dumb, or gross, but their audience will inject meaning into it. That said, there are plenty of episodes where they’re clearly taking a political stance on an issue.
Catcher in the Rye is overrated. It's about a whiny teenager that gets expelled from a wealthy preparatory academy outside of New York City. He is clearly the cause of all of his own problems, but basically spends the whole time getting upset at people for being "fake". There are definitely inappropriate parts in the book for a 9 year old to be reading. Some of those include swear words and a scene at a nightclub in NYC that develops into the main character Holden agreeing to hiring a prostitute. Once she takes her clothes off he says he gets too nervous to go through with it because he's a virgin and says he doesn't want sex, that he'd rather just talk. He pays for her time, but her pimp comes back and humiliates him and beats him up and they steal more money from his wallet. I don't know if kids should be reading about prostitutes, pimps, and reckoning with the loss of their virginity.
But to be fair, 9 year olds in real life aren't given catcher in the rye as homework. I HAD to read it, like as a junior in high school at 17 years old and that is a completely appropriate age. Oh, and it was the most boring book I've ever been forced to read. So bad I don't remember a thing about it except I had to read it once
There’s a very early episode of Family Guy where a man calls Peter a “phony” numerous times. That’s definitely a parody of the main character in Catcher in the Rye.
This was only 3 episodes before Episode 200, in which Sarah Jessica Parker pulled a Kenny when she and a bunch of other living, breathing celebrities joined Tom Cruz for a lawsuit against the town of South Park. Also, Paris Hilton somehow escaped from Mr Slave's ass.
I had to read this book my Junior year. It was the most BORING book I have ever read. I can’t even tell you anything by that happened. Funnily enough, we convinced our teacher to let us watch this episode in class because it had to deal with the book and she let us! Definitely one of my favorite episodes.
Leopold is a pretty famous or maybe infamous name because of the king of belgium Leopold II. some would argue that what he did in Congo was worse than Hitler so that's why the name lose its popularity. but in France, belgium, germany etc its still a common name with a few hundred of kids named leopold each year.
I love how Butters was able to get an advantage over the boys even though they scapegoated him. Also I love how this was the only time Mr Garrison was a responsible teacher 😂
5:13 thats true, they did make an album for the episode Chef Aid with elton john and some other big names, could have happened here too but the production time probably didn't allow it.
3:28 and 3:30 literally my favorite part 3:363:38: I can’t stop laughing at this part 🤣🤣 4:444:454:464:49: I still remember this episode from last year when I watched with my brother. And this part is so crazy it’s make me laugh
Catcher in the Rye was considered to be quite controversial back when it was released in the 50s, but by today's standards it's nothing that special. It's just back then people were much more concerned about what themes you can and cannot include in a widely published book I guess.
I had the same issue with _Lord of the Flies_ when we read it. Anything profound the book may have had to say as well as any shock value lost its muster decades ago. All one has to do is look at any American inner city and you'll see that story play out in real life.
You know what this episode reminds me of? The movie “The Producers,” both the Mel Brooks original and the remake. A movie about a Broadway producer who makes purposefully bad Broadway musicals so he can claim them as tax writeoffs to make money, and his accounting partner who has dreams of being a producer himself. They both team up to create the worst, most offensive musical ever for a big payday. That musical they made was a screenplay by a Neo Nazi called “Springtime for Hitler.” They did everything they could to make it as horrible as possible to score the biggest tax writeoff, unfortunately come time for the show everything went horribly right as Springtime for Hitler was so bad it’s good and everyone thought it was a comedy. So because their musical turned into a hit, the jig was up and the IRS found out what they were doing the entire time
Sarah Jessica Parker is an actress best known for her role as Carrie Bradshaw in Sex and the City. As for the name Leopold, i don't think it's very common these days, but there have been several belgian kings with that name, and of course, the german musician Motzart, whose first name was Leopold. One of the Bugs Bunny cartoons "Long Haired Hare" from the 40s features bugs pretending to be music orcestra conductor Leopold Stokowski
A lot of the books that were banned for controversial topics are considered rather tame in the UK. I remember reading a book on a terrorist attack in school and it went into gory detail about the injuries.
Imagine watching a show Criss Cross through eachother. And then acting Surprised you don't even know your favorite South Park Character's name is his middle name... if only he started watching the rest of South Park in Chronological order...

Leopold is a bit of an older name. Here's something surprising. I actually NEVER spoke to a person called Claire until last year. I've heard that name on other people many times, but never actually spoke to anyone with that name in my life until last year... this is considering I used to live in England for 5.5 years.
It's a very popular book to read in college like state colleges and universities also there are other books that are popular segment Freud the book interpretation of dreams that was published in 1901 and Warren peace that had over 12,000 pages
They did make the book, I used to have it. It came in a box with dvds of butters episodes. It also came with an inspector butters badge. Unfortunately, I lost it and I don’t remember exactly what it was called.
Sara Jessica Parker is an enigma. She can look pretty good sometimes (i though so in Honeymoon in Vegas) and other times or angles just looks weird. It truly is strange. Maybe a classic Seinfeld 2-face.
Catcher in the Rye was considered controversial back then and was banned from schools. Apparently it was for sexual content (interactions with pimp and prostitute), dark themes (drugs, suicide, etc). But for me it was super boring, didn't understand why it was so "bad"

99% of Catcher in the Rye is a teen who decided to skip graduation to bum around the city for a few days and whine about how much growing up sucks. There's an occasional dirty word (sh*t, mostly) and one use of "sexy" early on to describe his male roommate (it had a different meaning then, so not even in a gay way) but no other swearing. The only scene that by today's standards would be considered dirty is one point about halfway through when he hires a hooker so he can lose his virginity. She's even younger than he is, which creeps him out and he backs out of it before she even gets her clothes off. This actually annoys her enough she has her pimp beat him up. Aside from that one scene, nothing in it would be considered offensive in the slightest to high-school aged students (which is the age group that usually gets assigned it, not elementary kids)
what kind of school did you go to where not only did you hear about King Leopold but also were given enough detail to remember the name God knows how many years later
I'm from Chicago Leopold and stotch were the 2 rich kids that murdered a poorer classmate here back in the 1920s ish n almost got away with it cuz they were rich n back then it was thought rich ppl don't kill
Agreed. When comparing the boys to Cartman, they're saints. However, when the boys are put into bad situations like the one in this episode, they can be really cruel, insensitive, exploitive, manipulative, and downright selfish. It makes them hypocrites, especially Kyle who is almost always pointing out how unethical or evil characters like Cartman are.
Yknow, as messed up as butter's childhood actually is, it would be no surprise if he wrote a memoir that would actually be a best seller and make him millions. 😂
They forced us to read that book once they took it out of the list . It was in 2005 or 2006. my school pretended they wanted to be on the news or something 😒
I really wish this book was real. I would love to read The TOSM. Read CITR and it's a well written book. I would definitely recommend reading it. If you want, you can have my copy of Catcher In The Rye.
Fun fact there's a website where you can read the book for real, all you do is search the book title and read it, this episode is hilarious, by the way I'd love to see your reaction to that book.
The only thing I remember from Catcher in the Rye is that at some point the main character gets robbed and humiliated by a Pimp.
The only thing I remember is the book containing the word "fuck", because our English teacher wrote it on the black board a bunch of times.
I remember Holden Caulfield being the whiniest b**** of a protagonist ever.
I remember he pays for a Sex Worker so he can have someone to sit with
Goddam, that's all?
Yeah, the pimp nuts in his butt cheeks.
Butters is his nickname. His first name is Leopold. It's just that Butters Stotch sounds like Butterscotch.
It's his nickname but also his middle name I believe.

They reveal Butters’s name in the episode “You Got F'd in the A” season 8 episode 4. You will like it because it’s a Stan and Butters episode.
"His moves...they were so original. So inventive,argh..."
YES SUCH A GREAT EPISODE

It was actually first revealed in the casa bonita episode (season 7 episode 11)

A great satire of how pseudo-intellectuals operate in popular culture.
