I took a 2 part stretching class from Pavel ** years ago, before he was such a big damn deal. 30 people in the class, 2 consecutive Wednesdays. At the question and answer period at the end of class 2, he was calling on everyone by their first names. He had memorized the names of 30 people he was never going to see again. I brought this up, and he just smiled. Blew my mind .....
Andre McGoo disagree. Depends on your goals. For a balance between strength and endurance/general fitness with one bit of equipment, they are pretty damn hard to beat. Especially if you don’t want to visit a gym.
+Rockford Cool I had his relax to stretching video as well as Naked Wartior, Beyond Crunches, Power to the People, someone stole my Beyond Crunches. As for the Power to the People I wasn't a weight lifter so I didn't get into it but a Coworker at the time order the book and got ten times bigger he was busting out of his Uniform shirt true story. I went straight kettlebell and body weight for a year and when I had to do a deadlift I did 3 reps 20 lbs heavier than my one rep max a year prior. I’m a believer
The what the hell effect is a solid thing for sure. I’ve noticed it with rucking, sandbag movements, and hiking while carrying odd objects like a sandbag. The use of the body as a whole, and the continual training of movements and not muscles is a large part. As is the addition of the cardiovascular component, or the metabolic conditioning angle. People get lost In the weeds with barbells and dumbbells a lot more than they do with a knowledgeable kettlebell base. It’s easy to go and do isolation movements with a dumbbell, yet you never see individuals do cleans, or snatches, or any explosive movements with them. The opposite is true for kb’s, you rarely see isolation as it’s such an awkward implement and it sort of self selects away from the bodybuilding sphere
That's right. I've been forced to try calisthenics because of lockdown and then bought a kettlebell because those were the cheapest weights around. Finally was able to buy a barbell and I gladly saw that despite looking leaner I'm now stronger, which is really badass at 37. I can now shoulder press more weight and reps with the barbell while STANDING than I could SITTING back in february
@@PsychoholicSlag83 dammn that's sick dude, its crazy cos Kettlebells weight less than dumbells yet their effectiveness is crazy like a 24kg dumbell can only do so much compared to a 24kg kettlebell
I'm a year into my kettlebell journey, mostly concentrating on Simple and Sinister every day. Started at 16 Kg bell, now at a 32 Kg bell. I totally love it. I also have done military presses, carries and more once I own each new weight. Along with proper eating and sleep, I went from 201 lbs to 150 lbs, way more strength, endurance, energy, better mood and more! I'm a firm believer in kettlebells.
@stormskenpo look up simple and sinister by Pavel. But the protocol he's talking about in the video I believe is the quick and the dead. Parallel bar dips and swings. There's a book about that one as well.
@stormskenpo either minimalist program is perfect for martial artists. I've seen a lot of transfer over into my striking and grappling. Moreso than conventional barbell strength training.
After years of bench pressing, squatting, and deadlifting my body into oblivion, a single 16kg kettle bell has been kicking my ass over the last 6 months. It immediately exposed how weak my core and posterior chain was. I've added a second 16kg kettle bell since which has given me the ability to add a lot of movements to my routines.
Kettlebells are by far the best option to have at home at all times. They are extremely versatile and they can teach you so much about coordination and mind-body connection. Everyone should learn how to use them and those who don't are missing a lot.
I love Kettlebells! I've trained with kettlebells almost exclusively for a year half now and the results have been amazing! People always ask why I only use kettlebells..the secret is it makes you extremely strong, most effective way to build your postering chain, and you have flexible with workouts, range of motion and flows. I'm 6'1 180lb, but deceivingly strong.
Love to hear that, and am thinking of switching from the “insanity: max 30” program I’ve been doing for years. I know it greatly increases strength, but what about agility and stamina for running? I take insanity as training for explosiveness. If you can shed some anecdotal info, that would be awesome!
My uncle is 77 years old. He loves when people ask how old he is; they never believe him. He has been working out/weight training since his mid- 20s. When he retired as a teacher, the students didn't believe he was old enough to retire. He also has always been careful about eating healthy too.
@@johnnycage435 he has mostly eaten "clean" since his late 20s including reducing his red meat intake a lot by his 40's. He used to indulge in ice cream occasionally in the summer usually with a homemade cobbler. He turns 80 this year and still works out. He eats more beans and fish than meat now. I talk to him once a month as I live overseas; he is still very sharp. I've tried to mimic his lifestyle because out of his siblings, he is in outstanding physical and mental health. Thank you for asking.
*By functional I mean you can comfortably swing or carry it **bestgym.equipment** around as one would expect of a kettlebell weight. By versatile I mean the protective coating does not prevent attaching magnetic micro-plates to increase the weight, so, for example, a 35 pound kettlebell can be increased by up to 5 pounds in weight or possibly a bit more by attaching magnetic micro-plates.*
I’ve had a 14 forever. Your better going with a lighter weight for your first one. Gives you more variety to exercises and if it gets too easy just increase volume

Yes but be aware - You can really wreck your elbows. I’m living through it now. I’ve tried to pay attention to technique but i progressed too fast and went too heavy. Had to back off cleans and snatches. Been at it for 1.5 years.
I started working as a cater waiter doing large events, lots of hard physical work - trays, squatting , lunging, up and down stairs with 40lbs bags of ice, etc. I soon learned I needed to get in better shape. I started using kettlebells and I now outperform people half my age. I'm 49.

I have had shoulder surgery and can’t do pull-ups, barbell presses anymore but the KB press and snatches feels great in the shoulder. Push ups/rows feel fine as well.
Have you tried hanging? Stephen Kirsch a shoulder surgeon recommends building up to 90 secs per day. Has fixed my shoulder issues and is great for shoullder rehab. I recommend looking on UA-cam if you haven't already tried it.
I will comment briefly about the comment I made about kettlebell training for security work, the advantage is you generally go from sitting around, observing your area of responsibilities,to going into a incident where your conditioning can be the difference between life and death, for yourself or a coworker. Kettlebell training allows you to do that, try swings!
Completely agree. The Kettlebell swing is absolutely amazing. You have dumb YT videos claiming its horrible with (spurious) research. Nope. These days, I cool down or warm up with Kettlebell swings before using more specific exercises like the bench press: warm ups with 225 lb (20+ times) and 185 lb (30 times).
I used to mock kettlebells when I was a young gym rat. In my older age they have been a fitness saver. I can have 3 sets in a small amount of space. If I don't have time to walk over to the gym or if I feel like I have extra energy they are so easy to pick up and bang out 30 minutes with. Definitely helped my core strength too.
No. He doesn't want people to dismiss his work or his claims because of his age. Google ageism bro. It's real. Unless you're Arnold Scwartzeneeger and are world famous, people attach negative connotations to being older. People are afraid of death. They're afraid of losing youthful looks and energy. And banging younger women is so easy it's a wonder it's not illegal (I'm talking like 19 and up, I'm not a pedophile LoL)
@@yomumma7803 There is no secret really. I mean, you already know what it is. Hit the gym. Take care of yourself. You don't have to look like an athlete. Just LOOK the part. And let them come to you. @Frank Castle "Not according to the worlds best strength athletes", are you drunk or something lol? Barbell training transfers over well to general strength and that applies to everyone, not just to elite powerlifters/strongman... That's a terrible example too as they're at the top of the food chain in terms of genetics and training stimulus.
@Frank Castle Lmao now you resort to being the shit talker, whatever Frank Castle.. I don't know why I even bothered talking to somebody who poses as a bad ass when you're so insecure you cant even back up your own bro facts.
I do the same thing. Even though I know I’m 35 I still look and try to live like I’m 25. So when people ask me my age sometimes I never want to tell them because if they can’t tell by looking and talking to me I must be doing something right.
The thing I love about kettlebell training is how you don't have to worry about looking as big as someone else. Barbell training sometimes makes me feel insecure when I see someone with bigger legs or shoulders. Kettlebells, it's all about how long you can endure. You of course do grow muscle, but that's not the real goal. In fact, kbs aren't that great when it comes to efficient bulking. The real goal is just being better than last week or last month, and for me it's attainable and relatable. You don't obsess about muscle gain or fat loss, but the number of reps or sets you can do in a given time.
I find myself in the same boat. I just want to be incredibly strong and functional. I wouldn't mind the athletic body but now I couldn't imagine myself bulking up, don't wanna be too heavy and slow. Kettlebells are so much more enjoyable and feel more natural in the movement to me.
I don't care about size. Strength is more important. Using kettlebells, body weight exercises, and others, I lift heavier than PED gym goers. Why? My tendons and ligaments are stronger. I have better cardiovascular fitness. My fast twitch muscles are better. Yes, all things being equal size is better, but things aren't equal.
@@concernedcitizen6676 There’s definitely ways to do both in a healthy manner though. I’d been doing a lifting program called 5/3/1 for about 8 months and finally bought the 5/3/1 Forever book about a month and a half ago. I started the Beginner Prep School program from that book which incorporates some kettlebell work and running (which I haven’t started doing yet lol) alongside the main barbell lifts. I’ve also dropped my squat weight and am focusing on having powerful, fast, reps every time. I do a ton of goblet squats now too which absolutely humbled me and my leg strength. I’ve been feeling more athletic than ever, like I’m using my body correctly for the first time. Also doing a bit of jump rope as part of the warmup. Love this program lol
I met Pavel and John at the Arnold Classic years ago. He was so nice and easy to speak to. I never forgot that as some of you know how many people go to the Classic. Pavel is a class act.
If you looked at the body like it was an electrical power grid producing energy through electron flow, you'd realize the neuro-electrical demand of doing heavy swings is very high, and like pavel said it works the muscles without killing them. You can do taxing deadlifts, to a point, but I can do kettlebell swings and feel an intense cardio/muscular burning pain that I will never get from deadlifts. You can do heavy deadlifts until you trip the 20 amp circuit breaker at 5 reps, but with something like a KB swing you can go at 19 amps for 20+ reps (certainly not if you're a beginner, but as you adapt). The neural adaptations that allow for that kind of energy output which is all flowing out of the brain down to the muscles is what goes beyond conventional weight lifting that allows someone to go beyond their plateaus in normal physical outputs. You've upgraded from a 15 amp circuit breaker to a 20 amps, and you can run at 19 amps for half a minute at a time instead of 5-8 seconds. I will say that the breathing pattern you learn while doing swings is a huge part of that. You learn to breathe very forcefully as you get better at using heavier weights of kettlebells. I don't do kettlebells until after I've done 25-30 minutes of HIIT and I'm already drenched in sweat. By the time I hit the KB's I'm pretty close to toast since I like to train fasted states only, but those 2-3 sets of swings are killer at 20 reps a pop (ends up being 40 since I do 20 one side and then switch right into the other side, then active recovery with planks). I too am aging towards 20
Reminds me of how doing squats with dumbbells can feel so taxing while barbell squats are such a different type of fatigue. I was barbell squatting 200-250 lbs for working sets, and grabbing a 50 lb dumbbell and doing some squats felt like an entirely different experience.
Kind of pointless for someone as well known as Pavel to withhold his age in the age of Google. You don't even need to Google it yourself. Look in the comments. Someone already did it for you.
I think the WTH effect is contributed greatly by grip strength. When you get a stronger grip you are stronger everywhere. you recruit more muscles with that grip. Its like the grip itself is calling out to every fiber.
Yes you get an increase in grip strength fast. In the beginning i used 5 kg Kb and after 3 x 10 rep swings i feared i fling that thing. Also back improves with swings for me. But it is not 'body building'. You get stronger thats for sure
I only have one 55 lbs kettlebell and I use it for swings, cleans and I do burpees for 60 seconds straight 3 times. It’s the best thing I’ve ever done since I stopped using barbells and dumbbells.

It seems that the training, the diet, everything the modern world "discovers" was already known and used in ancient Greece. Kettle bells were extensively used and a diet that incorporated everything we now know it's beneficial, was also extensively used. Moreover, of the famous ancients for who we know year of birth and death, it seems that they had a life expectancy comparable to that of the modern man even without the existence of modern cures and drugs.

@@avocado4357 it definitely can. Swings do eventually grow hamstrings and thighs, a bit of glutes. Glute bridges and lunges will help the most for glutes so do focus on that. Resistance bands would help round out any exercise loading you might miss out if you’d don’t have dumbbells or weights
I have used mine every other day for two weeks now, and my only regret would be that I did not get started sooner. My 15 minute full body workout gives me a simple, sufficiently fun program, that I can do at home. It builds my core muscles, which I now feel burning on a regular basis. Swinging this thing requires more stability than isolated exercises, so I am getting stronger, with a lower risk of hurting myself than with regular training. I feel my posture and body language are already improving as a consequence.
Why is everyone so much bothered about his age? He is in good shape however old he is. Isnt that the most important message? And he has always injected humour into his message.....
With kettle bells and a diet change I went from 300lbs to 255lb in less than 2 months (I am 6'2" male). Diet obviously was a huge factor but kettle bells def built my strength. I am going to get into more of a hypertrophy program now with dumbbells but on off days still use the kettle bells.

It’s pretty straightforward but just remember this one important step - when you swing up make sure your buttocks are clenched lol that’s how you know you’re doing a proper swing. And trust me you’ll feel it. There’s no right or wrong answer, you can swing it mid length or high above you. It doesn’t always have to be swung that high. Just lifting it is challenging enough. I swing it mid length rather than all the way to the top and doing 100 of that puffs me out. All don’t try doing all 100 in one go (most people can’t) do sets of either 10 or 20 or 25. Start with the smallest weight too and work your way up. And ALWAYS warm up first
I have taught 3 or 4 guys how to swing. It is funny and sad that a lot of people think that lifting the bell with the arms is how it is done. I even see youtube videos where they are not swinging correctly. Watch Pavel videos on how to swing.
Always great info from Pavel. Major pet peeve of mine. Fred Hatfield was not the first man to squat 1000 lbs. Dave Waddington and Lee Moran both did it in official competition before him. Hatfield just publicized his lift better.
Kettlebells are used by Russian Spec Ops. Rightfully, they emphasize functional strength over power lifting. Kettlebells bar none are superior to anything. I use kettlebells as well as free weights, emphasizing functional strength. Some of my friends use PEDs and I'm much stronger and have greater endurance than them.
Fast fibers aren’t trained in fast movements; they’re trained in short duration high power output which can be fast, but not always. Doing light stuff fast for 10 min doesn’t do it; that’s slow twitch. Gotta look into some basic muscle Phys before listening to people who do easy stuff “their body likes.”

Dilly Dally what was your routine?

Please can you tell me where I can learn about the neural adaptations which allow for greater energy output.
Spent years lifting weights but now I’ve went kettlebell I’ll never go back, workouts are shorter, more enjoyable and more effective, IMO of course

I got mine last week, and boy, is there a lot to be excited about!
Yo kettlebell with swings are giving me great results! Recommended to everyone. You do become stronger in other areas, the changes are magical.
Why is everyone so much bothered about his age? He is in good shape however old he is. Isnt that the most important message? And he has always injected humour into his message.....
Because he gave an awkward response
With kettle bells and a diet change I went from 300lbs to 255lb in less than 2 months (I am 6'2" male). Diet obviously was a huge factor but kettle bells def built my strength. I am going to get into more of a hypertrophy program now with dumbbells but on off days still use the kettle bells.
I love this guy. Your the perfect interviewer for things of this nature, you ask the right questions. I’d love to see more of this. Thanks Joe
Kettlebell workouts are one of my favorite forms of exercise, but you really need to have great form when pushing big weights and find yourself at the point of exhaustion, I wouldn't recommend them to people that have injuries or have terrible form.
This doggone video changed the entire course of my life. Been a chunky guy even though I’ve trained martial arts my whole life, and then I got myself a 40lb kettlebell. Can’t wait to get more
Same. Im 32 and should have done this yrs ago. It makes doing drills so much better
The kettlebell swing is excellent training for security work.

Kettlebells have literally saved me on many occasions not only in my Security Work but with life in General 💣💪🏽

03:33 🏋 Kettlebell training can lead to unexpected strength improvements in exercises you haven't been doing, known as the "what the hell effect."
05:09 💡 Kettlebells work muscles without causing excessive fatigue or soreness, making them effective for strength and performance improvement.
06:48 🧪 Kettlebell training optimizes the metabolic environment, leading to positive physiological adaptations.

Been trying out the kettle bell and boy it kicked my butt the first week. I started using it for my wrestling and boxing and I really noticed the explosivness and endurance that I got from using this weight.
Kettlebell swings made me do well in bowling. My arms felt stronger and I can lift the bowling bowl easily
Just swings and dips! A fantastic workout. Thanks Pavel!
Kettlebells are extremely good for full body developement. Single leg deadlifts and goblet squats with them are very effective.
If I could be trained by this guy, I’d be sooooo happy.
Nothing special about him
Took some of this on and noticed the "what the hell effect" with my guitar playing. On and Off for a couple of years I tried to learn Neon by John Mayer but my arms and hands would just tense up from gripping the weird chords and unnatural picking pattern. Trained a couple days of kettlebell swings and picked the ol guitar and literally said "what the hell" because everything is just easier now.
can't tell if you're serious but I hope you are cause that sounds amazing
Funny you say that man, been playing guitar well over 20 years, I noticed after a few months on the heavy bag that my hands had gotten much stronger, my finger dexterity improved as my hands strengthened, helped my playing a lot, especially running through scales. I just bought my first set of kettlebells this week... maybe I to will also be able to conquer and cover the elusive Neon lmao.🤣🤣
Who's watching this during the Corona virus and having a hard time finding kettlebells for sale?
you
Not me, I bought them all before this and I am price gouging everyone on eBay
Allen It took me quite a while to find one last week and paid a premium for it. Everyone was sold out. Getting delivered tomorrow.
@@veerchasm1 good! If I had extra I would do the same lol
@@CarpenterHunts that's awesome you got your hands on one. I tried to buy a 40 pound KB for 60 bucks off some website Google shopping recommended. After I paid for it I got an email from the seller in Chinese lol. It was definitely to good to be true because they sent me surgical masks instead a kettlebell hahaha
I read about Pavel in Bill Phillips's Sports Supplement Review in like '98 and he was talked about as a decades old legend! I met Muhammad Ali once and I asked "how old is Pavel Tsatsouline?" Ali said "Pavel is 156 years old!"
Basically compound moves vs isolation moves....compound uses more muscle groups in unison to achieve a lift....traditional Olympic lifts, bench, squat and deads, are the tried and true foundation.
Why is it a big deal he doesn’t want to offer up his age? He knows he looks amazing! It’s not that at all, he doesn’t want to limit anyone! Age in his mind does not exist. God bless him for keeping that simple mindset! Nothing negative at all! Love Patel!
Honestly, I got a set of kettlebells at the office
And just doing military press, bent over rows, deadlift and swings several times a day
I’ve been in the best shape since pre-pandemic
what office
I’ve been waiting for this guy to come on the JRE Podcast for years! #greasethegroove
GTG is a great method but this guy is hard to watch
I just had a revelation watching this video. This guy is an animal. I love him
How’s that revelation working out a year later? 😂
I have put the weights down 5yrs ago & almost train exclusively with KB’s for 2yrs with jump rope and in the best shape of my life.
I remember when his DVD came out and I diden't afford a set of kettlebells. A good set was $500 at the time wich felt like $1000. For some reason my local gym had kettlebells classes included in the membership, so I learned from certified instructors. 8 years ago; I finally got my own set of kettlebells. It's the best equipment ever imo!
"Jamie, pull up the age of Pavel"
underrated
All of these people are so uncomfortable and not trusting of this guy because he didn't disclose his age, lol as if they were going to actually pick up a kettlebell in the first place
Nah, its more like "Never ask a woman her age, its offensive. But you can ask men because men dont matter. That's why we laugh when we hear about men getting date-drugged at bars."
@@lullsbaby9321 What the fuck are you on about?
He found an excuse to talk about the one thing he wants to talk about
@@bobbyboy1797 Its "offensive" to ask women their age, and considered rude. Why is it acceptable to ask men their age? Pavel doesnt want to answer - and people are making fun of him for it. Why? (That was my point - double standards)
I used rape as an example because most people get outraged when women get raped, but disregard (or outright laugh) men who get raped. Double standards.
@@lullsbaby9321 I would never laugh at a man getting roofied. And I agree it's very bad that many times we don't take men seriously in a variety of different ways. But the reason it's okay to ask a man his age and not a woman is because it is a more sensitive topic for women because of biology.
He never called me comrade, what’s going on Pavel?
Very interesting interview I will look for the full interview to watch.
In Soviet Russia the kettle bell swings you !
WTH Effect. Love it. I bet some would call Bro-Science at times during this video, but I believe (in any training) there is great intuition and of course proven history. Also, I would never disagree with Pavel, he could probably kill you with an intense glare. 😡
Pavel is Great Guy.😀
25 minutes of kettle bell training and burpees for 3 weeks. Down 10 lbs with my Normal eating routine.🤙🏼
What workouts do you do
Same with me. I’m obese and been doing 100 swings only everyday and it’s been around 2 weeks so far and I’m already noticed a difference. I’ve definitely lost fat. My clothes are looser, my double chin is almost gone, my belly is definitely going in. I eat around 2000-2200 calories a day and my diet isn’t healthy. I have lots of carbs still - bread, chips, pastas, rice and chocolate and cake. I eat anything I want so long as I keep it within my limit. And still my body is changing. This is just two weeks, can’t wait to see what a whole year of swings is gonna do for me.
@@natevic1867 if you don’t mind me asking… did you learn the swings from a video? I want to make sure Im doing everything correctly like the breathing. And how much weight do you swing?
@@hto8010 yup i watched several vids really and learned how to do a proper swing. Just type in how to do a kettlebell swing, literally every vid shows you the same method. And ALWAYS warm up first
@@hto8010 sorry I currently do 16kg which isn’t that heavy but still pretty heavy for me. Even when I started at 8kg it was giving me a good workout
I think his answer about age being 20 is good

Reality is subjective
You say I am old you feel old
Reality is not subjective.
I think training in kettlebells make you bold.
If everyone just listened to Pavel there would be no weak people left in this world.
It’s actually lactATE. It’s a basic chemical reaction, not an acidic one
