this is the first thing that im doing in my morning, i should probably go say hi to my family, but priority holder just uploaded and we all know that priority holder is way more important than any mortal connection or bond
This video is great! I love that you say what you’re thinking, it’s something other youtubers do differently and the way you do it really gives insight into the game
Thanks and I appreciate the kind words! I'm glad you enjoyed it! Mostly by necessity, my process ended up becoming: recording footage, editing it, then providing commentary. I know many other people provide live commentary which has its own kind of value, but by commentating after all the editing, I've seen how the game unfolds and can trace back the ripple effects certain decisions had. It is painful when editing to realize you lost because of a bad mulligan or T1 Thoughtseize decision though lol. Also, I make plenty of mistakes or close calls to talk about haha. This deck in particular was pretty tricky to navigate because it's hard to know the potency of Chalice or High Noon until you're a couple of turns in. And you're constantly being presented with opportunities to pitch-cast Solitudes and Subtleties, when it may be better to hold them.
@priorityholder yeah a couple months back i sort of breezed into mythic with a brew of it, used phlage and the d&d set legendary djin as the finishers i could play through a symmetrical lock
@@demarge1065 That sounds so sweet! Are you talking about Calim Djinn Emperor? Were you running Chalice of the Void, or cheap early interaction? I'd be tempted to jam Blood Moon in there too, but that might be too many "do nothing" enchantments lol. It does shut down creature-land attacks though...
@priorityholder yeah calim, I did run cheap interaction and the list was actually soft to blood moon due to needing blue heavy for mana drain and phlage.
What are your favorite tools for control decks? I personally like the more prison-y cards, but maybe you're drawn to Mana Drain, Temporary Lockdown, or Supreme Verdict.
Teferi, Time Raveler stops Amped Raptor from casting any spell, because they're trying to cast a spell as part of another ability which Teferi prevents.
The stoneforge player in i think game 3 could have waited to put in the assimilation aegis at instant speed with stoneforge if you try to cast a spell, getting value out of that mana drain.
Yeah I was surprised they didn't try that. Seems like that play would have helped swing the game for them. Also, I think they severely underestimated High Noon. They didn't bounce it with T3feri or try to hit it with Assimilation Aegis and HN ended up bricking their Snapcasters later in the game.
Another great video! Just a quick question, wouldn't some creature lands like Restess Anchorage or Restless Bivouac be good to close some games where you've reached the lockdown state or is simply to risky of a blowout to run with the evoke elementals in the meta?
Thanks! Yeah I think you're right that a couple of creature-lands would be helpful. Lately I build my Timeless manabases with essentially no ETB tapped lands outside of a couple Surveil duals, but I think this strategy could benefit from a Restless Anchorage or two. Their exclusion here is mostly just a result of that "no ETB tapped lands" mindset I have, which can cause me to miss out on stuff. I also tend to sub in some MDFCs for lands to get that extra utility (and to increase the number of pitch cards for Evoke Elementals). The good thing is that this deck is pretty good at closing since many of its answers are threats: Spell Queller, Solitude, and Subtlety. Not to mention the burn from cracking High Noons.
@priorityholder completely fair, it only takes one close game lost to a tapland to swear off them forever haha! That said, your slower gameplan seems to survive it. And I would for slot one mystic sanctuary out for a creature land. It didn't seem to impact the board too much except for the one game where you got a mana drain back. For card draw, I'm not sure if this is fun, but the one ring, both your Teferis can bounce/tuck it if it becomes problematic and felt you had too many situations where supreme verdict just died in your hand especially when multiple were drawn. So maybe slot some of those out for The One Ring :)
@@gobomania Yeah taplands can be brutal lol. But since we're never playing something T1, this deck could probably support a couple more without too much trouble. I like your ideas! The One Ring would be nice, not sure what to cut though. You mention the Teferi's bouncing/tucking TOR, I've actually been trying to make a turbofog deck that repeatedly bounces and recasts TOR lol. I'll have to remember to put T3feri in there haha
Not sure if it counts as control but I've been playing a lot of Tergrid in Brawl and love an opener with 3 discard spells straight away. Is pioneer masters going to have any impact on the Timeless format at all do you think? I know only a few spoilers have been released so far but some of them seem quite powerful.
Nice! Tergrid is so strong, I might try Tergrid discard sometime in Timeless. Though, I've been struggling to make a good dedicated Discard deck lately. I'm guessing with the sheer number of cards in Pioneer Masters, it will have some impact on Timeless. Storm might use Dark Petition, I could see people running Baby Jace in Midrange, and we're getting our first true "Bogle" on Arena with Gladecover Scout. We're also getting Silence, which together with Orim's Chant might make a prison-y/turbofog deck possible lol. Any Pioneer Masters cards you're looking forward to?
Unfortunately I just play bo1, but I can tell you some cards to consider for the Sideboard. (Not an expert), but I think about Sideboarding in two different ways: making already strong matchups even stronger or making poor matchups a bit better. Sometimes, it's not worth chasing the second option and it's better to just accept some bad matchups and dedicate your SB to crushing certain decks. Not to mention you should be sideboarding against their sideboarding, so it gets even more complicated lol. Besides being bo1 exclusive, I also switch decks constantly, so I don't tend to get an ironclad read on the matchups of any given deck. BUT, I think I'd have the 4th Supreme Verdict in the SB and possibly another 1-2 copies of a Wrath for the aggro matchups. Chalice of the Void isn't very good against Show and Tell, so I'd possibly have a 4 card package to switch in. The problem is, I'm not quite sure what to switch in. This might not be the most pressing thing to think about because I suspect this deck already has a decent SnT matchup with the High Noons, Mana Drains, and Reprieves. Maybe Disruptor Flute since it has some utility in other matchups? And I'd like some number of Dovin's Veto in the SB against heavy noncreature decks, probably would side out the Subtleties in those cases. Hopefully this helps a little bit!
In the very first game, why isn't you supreme verdict sooner? I feel like it would've cornered your opponent and you wouldn't have had to worry about your life total so much
Good question! I watched it back and I don't quite know why I didn't snap that off. I think I was feeling safe since they didn't have good attacks through Subtlety, but the opp correctly decided to chump-attack anyway to attempt to close the game quickly. Also they were threatening an Ajani flip. The bold moves by them made my not casting Supreme Verdict look worse. I think you're right, I should have just cast it after the second Raptor was in play to take the heat off.

But seriously, have fun with family this weekend!

@@burnburn645 Thanks! Kind of you to say that, and I'm glad you enjoyed it!
Possibility storm is my favorite card with the high noon and time raveler
Wow, what a sweet lock combo. And thanks to you, I just realized it's on Arena. I might have to make another version of prison lol

Good catch! Despite playing with and against T3feri so much, I still miss stuff lol
