Steve, I have the same radio. It is currently at a fellow ham house from my Club here in Klamath Falls, OR. he cleaned it, and replaced the meter & I got a 2.7K SSB filter too, & he is tuning it up. I'm selling it because I have too many HF radios. TS-430S, FT-991A, FT-891, FT-817nd, & a G90. I am the second owner of the radio too.
I will respect the hard-won scientific gains of those amateur radio operators in whose steps I walk, and gladly share such knowledge as is mine with those who are to follow. Thanks, Steve, for applying the hippocratic oath to ham radio-do no harm.
That's really awesome Steve, great job. I'm not sure I'd have the guts to do that, I'd have to find someone to walk me through doing it a time or two first.
I found an old radio that was super cheap. I had very little to lose if I messed up... maybe even gain a little skill today and put it on the shelf until I know more. I've had this radio for 3 years and that whole time I thought it was putting out zero power because 3 years ago I didn't know as much as I know today. I recently found an old icom 2m radio for $25. I can't go wrong with that one either.
Great job! If you do something like that again get yourself some flux and just reflow what's there. It's way faster and you get nice shiny, conductive solder joints. You can never have too much flux!
I've got one of these waiting for me to get around to repairing it. I hope to work on it after I attempt to repair my TS-520s. I'm less intimidated by the TS-520s as I have more experience servicing tube gear, but who knows what I'll get myself into. First thing's first, though - Winter Field Day prep 😁
My Ts440 is very similar on the inside, very convenient to have the top board(s) swing up giving access to the other board(s) without out having to remove them. Glad you found some positive results, I wouldn’t have thought of cleaning connectors.
I tried everything I could think of. Next thing would be a bias adjustment, but... I've been told these old radios just work this way - lots of "feelings" instead of binary like a computer program.
@@temporarilyoffline Agreed! I have a friend who took out a ‘working’ Kenwood 570 out this weekend. 8 watts out on 80. Would you recommend this type of cleanup? He is an engineer but new to General. Both of us are generally handy…
Nice work Steve. Fixing it without doing harm is a win win!🏆
I was sweating for a minute!

I feel like I should keep them all, but I can't put them all on the air at once and shoving them in storage doesn't sound good to me!
Congrats, it's a keeper!!
I've had a lot of fun!
I always have a few extra screws around from other projects. LOL - Good work
Usually I bring in extra screws so I don't feel bad at the end.

Right! I didn't even bleed on this one!

Thanks for the tip!

WFD! lots of stuff going on this weekend

Almost 3dB! My dad taught me the polish the connector with RAM back in early 2000s. Love the tips for the amateurs out here!! Thanks!
3db is quite a lot.

I really do like the look of that radio.
It's a neat little machine!
That is impressive. Very nice video. Thanks
Thanks Don!
AWESOME!
Thanks!
Awesome.
Thank you! Cheers!
I have two of that radio. What is the famous issue that these radios have? The well known issue that you mentioned? Thanks for your time in advance.
The final amplifier section needing to be resoldered. Other than that, a fantastic radio!
@@temporarilyoffline Mine would go stupid....the PLL would unlock as the finals heated up. I had to send it back to the dealer for repair.
Surprised you didn't replace the front panel light as long as you had it torn open.
I had never seen one with a working front panel light and didn't even notice it was missing. Would have been good to do while I was in there for sure!
Were the wafers too crispy?
Extra crispy!
I might have waited a little longer, or confirmed the power supply caps had discharged. But, that's me 🙂
Ain't nobody got time for that! 😆
That's a lot of work. 73
Yes it was, I kinda dropped filming for some of it. It was an awkward setup to do all that. but +3db!
My 430s doesn't Tx on AM. Not sure what it could be.
I don't know what would cause that - do you have the service manual?
You need a gold screwdriver for this type of repair. 😁
I do!
Great job, but that's not a potentiometer, it's a gang switch.
Vocabulary was 2nd behind Maths in school for me.
You did maths on UA-cam. Don't tell Jim.
I probably had notes!
Love your videos you venture where I probably will never go KE8MWQ 73
Thanks!
