@milton bonet. As an ex Royal Marine myself I can assure you that band personnel undergo basic infantry training, small arms training and are required to reach a high level of fitness. As well as a musical training they also train as medics and drivers and other support roles. They serve in the same conflict zones as the Commandos. The most recent being Afghanistan. Evidence of their service in conflict zones are the medals on their chests. These are real Marines, not musicians dressed to look like Marines.
mike04535 I have to agree with you fully. I'm ex Stoker .yes they can play a bit of music but also March and fight. Nothing but respect for them and all Royals
Musicians are not Royal Marine Commandos, or they were not when I was a Marine, but they are Royal Marines who are infantry trained and trained to do many more jobs beside their music. On rear and forward basis they go into theaters of war and are required to stand to if the need arises. Their music is inspirational. They are the public face of the Royal Marines and do a wonderful all round job........Well done Lads and Lasses! There were no women in the RM when I was Marine, much has changed!
Yes, I know I am displaying the unit patch of the 173rd Airborne Brigade (my fathers Army combat unit patch from Vietnam) instead of my own Eagle, Globe and Anchor. I was in the U.S. Marine Corps from '86-'90 and never deployed anywhere other than a Wisconsin Army N.G. base (Ft. McCoy) for 12 weeks of Cold Weather training for our deploying to Norway for 3 months the next year. I did not get to deploy as my discharge was right in the middle of the deployment. So, no combat for me... I absolutely love the bands uniforms, they make my Marine Corps Band look like a really nice high school marching band. The music is just perfect and even the "wind up toy soldier" motion the drummers just make me smile. Great job my brother and sister Marines of Great Britain...
No matter how well trained they are, they are very, very good. when I can, I see the world and different Tatoos are fenomenal bands. Sorry for My english

Far out, England/English used to be used to refer to all of the UK and other countries in turn used that as well. That some people still do is not intended as an insult at all. Toughen up for goodness sake.
A Scotsman is not English. A Welshman is not English, An Irishman is not English, a Manxman is not English, even. Cornishman would rather be called a Cornish man. We all accept British. You wouldn't call someone from Basque region French or Spanish would you.
My father served 23years in the Royal Marines, when I was borne he was away with the Fleet to South Africa, he didn't see me until I was almost a year. War broke out 1939, April 1940 the Plymouth Royal Marines were sent to Norway. Germans had already invaded Norway. At least Dad came back. 🇳🇴
Now this is what I call a military band ! Superb ! Great music, primarily military, expertly performed. The bandmaster of the Coldstreams, who seems to have forgotten what a military march is, should take note !
Will that be the same as the Band of HM Royal Marines (Great Britain). I taught a student near Edinburgh who went on to play in the band of the Royal Marines. I'm sure he wasn't the only Scot in the band.
Mathew Willis are you aware of the concept of asking someone where they are from I’m sure if he taught him he would have asked him where he was from at some point

Of course you are right Dewi, but many from abroad have difficulty in understanding this, and with the rise in the past 30yrs or so of what at times can be a very unpleasant and at times infantile nationalism, particularly in Scotland, attitudes are beginning to change in England. It's all very sad,but in Scotland they can't seem to make their mind up between jealousy or hatred, and more and more feel that if they cannot face up to thier own demons it's time for them to leave.Being half Welsh,I think and hope they don't allow themselves to so easily conned.

Sadly you are misinformed. RM bandsmen are frontline forces first. They receive full marines training first ,and are bandsmen second. This is common practice in the UK. My grandfather was a combat medic in WWI in an infantry regiment, he was also a member of the Regimental band. He was invalided out with a sabre wound.

It's an arrangement of "I vow to thee my country", a poem by Sir Cecil Spring Rice that was set to music by Gustav Holst.
