  • It has been said that Morus Nigra is the superior mulberry species in terms of fruit quality and flavor. Better than Morus Alba, Macroura & Rubra. It took me 4 years of taking great care of my slow growing Morus Nigra tree to find out. See how things turned out in this tasting video and a detail of my experiences with the species Morus Nigra.

Here in Iran, Morus Nigra is very common. The fluff on the berries is usually a sign that the tree is not irrigated well enough, and branches losing their leaves means the sun is too harsh on the leaves. Since none of these seem to be an issue for you, I think the problem is that you're growing them in a container. Here, the trees develop a deep and complex root system to get the maximum moisture out of the soil, no matter how small they are. So I think maybe planting them somewhere that has enough space for the roots is better. Finally, they get more productive the larger they grow, so be patient!
By the way, if you get the juice on your hand, the best way to get it off is to crush an unripe berry in your hand and then washing it.

Yeah absolutely put those things in ground. I can’t believe you do so many trees and just containers lol. I love watching your channel but seriously give those things back to the Earth so they can actually start growing a decent size. I just planted 20 of those today all in ground. I wouldn’t waste my time with pots lol

Morus nigra doesn't mind frosts here in New Zealand, taste is better than a blackberry or strawberry for me --- also dries very well

Ross, From all I’ve researched the 3 true morus nigra Persian, Black Beauty and Noire De Spain are the same. I have black beauty and Persian here in Central Florida and they are identical. You are right, super slow growing and I also agree on no pruning because it’s not like other mulberries. I have 35 varieties. The first 2 years of fruit on my m.n. was borderline awful (lol) I was thinking what is all the fuss and I almost dig them up but the 3rd year they were delicious more like a blackberry in the look of the fruit but they taste totally different and they’re super good. I only get a handful each year. Your tree looks better than mine, I don’t think they’re fond of humidity. Also I’m amazed that you got one to root! From all I’ve read about true m.n. they don’t root. I see that you definitely do have m.n. so I’m excited you rooted one! I’ve also read shahtoot doesn’t root so maybe you could get one of those to root too😊

So if does not root from a cutting ... will you graft it onto another root stock, like White Russian?

Wrong. Black beauty is a close second but not the same. Nor is the persian. Noir de Spain is in a world class of it's own. I've been fortunate enough to try so many kinds of mulberry. Noir de Spain is one of a kind and nothing compares.

I looked for a new video on this tree but don't see one on your channel. How did this tree do and if it survived, was it a slow or fast grower, did you like the fruit, etc. I see you have the Gerardi too ... how do you like that one at this point (how big is that tree now?)

Great video, Ross!! This is helpful as I'm still trying to decide between the Girardi dwarf and the Morus Nigra for our zone. Im starting to run out of space so I need to be selective I think. I will continue to follow for future updates!

No two mulberry trees taste the same. I hate when ppl say certain varieties are better. It really doesn't seem to work that way. I've eaten from literally hundreds of mulberry trees of many varieties and many colors within each variety. In the end I can tell you that terrible and great versions exist for all the varieties

I grow several varieties of morus nigra. Mine all fruit on new years growth, so I prune heavily (1/3 to 1/2) after fruiting to encourage more cropping throughout the spring and summer. I do live in Sydney Australia so a much warmer climate.

There CAN be problems getting the wrong kind of mulberry species. It happened to me; I ordered a “Persian mulberry” from a nursery online, and eventually figured out that they had sent me a white mulberry (Morus alba species, with small black fruits), probably dwarf everbearing. I figured that out partly by studying the buds, and Ross pointed out the large buds of his tree which do identify his as a true Morus nigra. Maybe you are familiar with some different Morus nigra cultivar, that has unusual leaves?

@@RossRaddi Thanks, it's a pity. Why not grow it in the ground? I am not sure about your exact location, but there are locations in central Europe where Morus Nigra has grown for centuries with the winter temperatures down to -25°C. Some trees are more than 300 years old and still very productive.

That is to bad. I have a couple of 10 ft trees in Los Angeles that come August have the most delicious fruit. They sell them at a few farmers markets for 3 of 4 weeks for $20-$25 dollars for a 6 to 12 oz container. They sell out within an hour of the markets opening or they are all pre sold to high end restaurants . Love your content and they have motivated me to try a bunch of the wild figs I have growing on a stream bed at a family property outside of Fresno.
