  • This video is based around a rotary encoder used with a Raspberry Pi Pico. A rotary encoder is used to detect a rotary position or rotary movement. It can be used in a similar way to the potentiometer voltage divider used in an earlier video, but the rotary encoder does not have an upper and lower limit. The rotary encoder can instead provide a relative position. This is useful when you want to use different methods to control a value, perhaps a rotary encoder along with a web interface, or perhaps a rotary encoder with separate up and down buttons (such as used in a car entertainment system).
    The models used here are:
    ALPS rotary encoder EC16B2410408 - Does NOT work with the Raspberry Pi Pico
    ALPS rotary encoder EC12E2430804 - Used in the demonstration
    Rotary encoder SKU026777 - Includes a push switch
