Being a Goan I can so very relate to this video. What you said is correct. We do not necessarily have a word for Thank You and so we resort to देव बरें करूं. I remember people from my father’s generation saying Obrigad and Muito Obrigad very commonly but recently I haven’t noticed many using these words. It would be good to start re-using them. One very interesting thing about Konkani is, it is heavily influenced by Portuguese (as you rightly said 😇), so just the way many Indian languages happen to use English words we (Goans) use Portuguese words. Do you know Goans are used to even saying months of the year in Portuguese? 😇

In Mangalore GSB Konkani also, the words are Paadu and Phuski. Its been 500 years since our ancestors left Goa (Salcete) and surprisingly we have still retained the words. The Goan Sashti and Mangalore GSB dialects evolved from southern old Konkani which was spoken in Salcete region in the 16th century. On the other hand, the Goan Bardesi and Mangalore catholic dialects evolved from northern old Konkani.

I have read that during the initial days of Portuguese occupation, there was an agreement within a family that one sibling would stay back and convert so that they could keep their land while others fled. We have not been in touch with our relatives in Goa since but we still speak Konkani at home and know who our Kuldev is, whom we visit from time to time. What may be helpful is the document "Boletim Do Instituto Vasco Da Gama No. 68 - 1952" which contains a list of Hindu ancestors of the Gaonkars (prominent villagers), sorted by village, who converted during the Portuguese rule (pages 58-74) and this is available online.

Haha true. I only speak English fluently but I'm fascinated when any other languages have words that are way more descriptive than English. Portuguese has many too, even words for grandparents, uncles and aunts are more utilitarian in Hindi because you know exactly which grandparent, which uncle, in English you'd have to use 2-3 words. There's also no English equivalent for the word samdhan. But then again you can say cousin with one word in English and Hindi needs 2 (but the gender is part of it). Sorry, I can nerd out about this for sure.

That's because Konkani people and Language originated from the banks of the saraswati river civilization. The travelled south before finally settling in the Konkani region. While travelling south, thousands of years ago, some settled along the way in Gujarat, Maharshtra.... The Konkani language is derived from Prakrit... These 2 reasons might explain the resemblance....
